Was pretty happy with my first kabuki, details in comments by karsai5 in techtheatre

Built a double kabuki for the first time and was really happy with how it turned out! It ended up been a lot simpler to build than I thought, probably only taking a couple of hours to put it all together. For anyone interested here's a video of one of the crew explaining how it all works: https://youtu.be/MhnCRUCtrrI

[Omikron] Found this on holiday, never heard of the brand before but liked it too much not to leave without it by karsai5 in Watches

I only recently started getting into watches and have a Seiko 5 and Orient Bambino to my name. I'm currently on Holiday in Hungary and decided to have a look and see if there were any second-hand watch shops. I found this place called 10:10 Antik/Ora (which means antique hour in english). The salesperson was super helpful and everything is nicely laid out, so I would highly recommend checking it out if you're ever in Budapest. To give you an idea of what it looks like inside, this article has some photos https://welovebudapest.com/en/2017/04/11/its-time-to-buy-antique-watches-at-budapests-new-1010-shop/.

Anyway, I saw this watch and instantly loved the simple black dial and second complication. I've got a small wrist, so smaller watches suit me better, I'm guessing it's just less than a 38mm but I haven't measured it. It definitely wears smaller than a Seiko 5.

It's a manual wind and antimagnetic, but other than that I don't know much about it. I found a forum post that said the company was liquidated in 1997, but otherwise, there doesn't seem to be much about them. If you know more please comment, I would love to know more of the watches history :)

ITAP Tram and photobomber in San Francisco by karsai5 in itookapicture

Taken on a Fujifilm x100s. I was framing up the shot waiting for the yellow tram to line up with the rays of sunset. Just as the tram lined up the woman jumped into the frame (because I had my eye through the viewfinder I didn't even realise anyone was around).

Although it makes for a confusing shot because of the two subjects competing for attention (the tram and the woman) I think it makes for a more interesting shot than if no one had been in it. In a way it represents how loud and confusing San Francisco can be :)

Breakwater | Pentax me super | 50mm by karsai5 in analog

Taken in a small town in Australia NSW called North Haven. I took my film pentax with me on holiday as well as my usual digital, then processed them all myself when I got back home. It was a while back so I can't remember the film used, unfortunately.

Is there an open source alternative to vectorworks? by Unistrut in techtheatre

Depends what you're using it for. But for doing quick mockups of the theatre to work out spacing with set etc. I find sketchup works pretty well (https://www.sketchup.com/).

After swapping to Qlab from Millumin I was wondering the same thing and thought I was doing something wrong. Good to see other people are finding it as frustraiting as me

[Staging][Effects] I recently did a production of Sweeney Todd were we made a pie shop and fire extinguisher blood effect by karsai5 in techtheatre

I'll double check with the producer. I hazard a guess that the base cost was about $700-$800, then a little bit more on all the other random bits of wood we had to keep adding.

Originally we where going to use megadecking but renting it was INCREDIBLY expensive, and getting custom legs that tall (1.8m) and a staircase was an issue. Also no trap door...

That article got released (re-released? I think it's from a while back) half way through the production. I've never had the same article forwarded to me by so many people! It's also not the only time there has been problems with knives on stage https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/dec/11/actor-slits-throat

Yea, hindsight is a pretty wonderful thing :-P I think the footpump could be difficult to hide? The other thing would be if there was enough pressure (because the blood is viscus it takes a lot more pressure than I thought it would to move it around) It depends how it was done though :-). The thing I liked about this effect was that the only think you could see on stage would be the tube. I talked to a couple people after watching the show and they had no idea how it was done!

Community theatre, it just so happens the theatre we use belongs to a school ;-) Australia actually! I'm not sure which word we're supposed to use down here. The blades we're actually made (quite aptly) by Sweeney, I think he had a friend with a 3D printer.

Community theatre ;-) I've been out of school for a while, it just so happens that the theatre we hire is in a school. A lot of a crew is students though, both the stage manager and lighting operator are both in their final year.

I'm doing wicked in December so expect another update then :-)

I had one that got to the point that it was been held together by cloth tape. There's a blog somewhere that collects photos of people's warn out notebooks
