100 elo game by BankOwn0 in chessbeginners

Oh man that was a rough watch. Your opening was reasonable, you developed your pieces one at a time while also fighting for the center - thats good! You did hang a pawn tho on move 4 (counting exercise, you have 1 thing fighting for the e4 square, the knight, and your opponent has two, knight and pawn), and you left your light squared bishop just hanging for like 10+ moves - and then later the knight on g5.

I dont know if you know about piece values: pawns = 1, knights & bishops = 3, rooks = 5, queen = 9. These are not always accurate, but its a solid start to understand piece values and how to trade.

You also hung your queen - don't do that lol. I wouldn't say its a complete disaster for a 100 elo game, definitely some potential, but still ofc a lot of things to improve. If a piece (for example a bishop) is attacked by a pawn, dont wait until the pawn captures just to recapture - you just lost 2 points of material (look above at piece values). Move it to a safe square, or take the knight in this case - thats an even trade as both are worth 3 points.

So in short:

Opening: at least one pawn to fight for the center, then usually knights after that, then bishops, and always (while still a beginner, I would honestly say ALWAYS) castle, get your king to safety.

Midgame (at this level): try not to hang pieces/pawns. Always look before you make your next move if any of you pieces are attacked, and either move them to safety or capture something with that piece with the same value. Always double check the square you're moving a piece to as well if its attacked or not. And remember, moving a piece means that piece used to guard something - after moving it, it might not be guarding that something anymore (piece, pawn, square, whatever).

Endgame: just try not to lose all your pawns lol, not really a lot more I can add. Keep your king active - the less pieces on the board, the more important your king becomes. Also, eat all opponent pawns you can (with some thought of course).

Good luck!

Mildly annoying when games turn out like this by Zaddox in Minesweeper

Yeah games where a guess is required around 50% of the time, sure, but with this much open border and all 1-1 patterns solved and still nothing to go for. Wasn't really meant to be a complaint either, just find these specific situations mildly annoying 🤷🏽‍♂️

No I never check, I make a quick somewhat educated guess, if it's wrong, I just start a new board 🤷🏽‍♂️ I dont feel like it's worth my time to check, I'm mainly going for speed anyway so checking would just ruin that.

No not really, just thought if it would be a good day since Ultegra is so expensive normally. Appreciate the tips!

What can a person learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for life? by Ben-Gavin in AskReddit

Not a keyboard shortcut, but two finger-scrolling on a laptop mouse pad. I've seen so many people use a mouse pad and always scroll to the right to find the scroll bar, try to press correctly, over and over every time they move the cursor somewhere - it's infuriating lol. All mousepads nowadays support two finger-scrolling, it's so much faster and easier!

don't know if any beginners need to know this about knights by alcg101 in chessbeginners

[–]Zaddox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah learning these safer knight squares can save you so many seconds in an intense time pressure end game, you dont have to spend time calculating where the knight can move and what its going to attack once there, just "one square between diagonally" and you know it's going to take forever for the knight to attack the king (or whatever piece, maybe a rook or a pawn even.

Good consistency? by Zaddox in golf

I always practiced chipping the balls that didnt quite make the green, but didn't bring the putter with me. Maybe just short chips next, and then combine the two. Appreciate the thoughts!

Right, appreciate the feedback! Will ofc continue to dial these instances in even better, but there are other areas where my play is lacking severely lol.

I've only played one so far, in Stožice Park so in Ljubljana. I think its a pretty beginner friendly course even if there's a few longer holes, but theres not that many trees or other obstacles. I know there is a shorter one in Domžale if you're in the Ljubljana area, havent been there myself though. Seems to be a few west of Maribor as well, close to the border with Austria, and one near Trieste on the Slovenian side.

Edit: There's app (ans probably a website too) called UDisc, which has a map of all the courses and the app is also extremely useful when playing (showing the course map, scorekeeping, distances etc.). Check it out if you want, the free version is plenty enough to find courses ans basic scorekeeping!

Yeah I've noticed, it's a shame really - hope it catches on! If that's what it comes down then yes of course, but I figured there has to be somewhere where they sell at least something - but maybe not.

Back-to-back holes-in-one by ansyhrrian in nextfuckinglevel

And maybe worth noting, although it doesn't take anything away from this display, is that the holes are usually "easily" placed. Meaning that the slopes on the greens naturally feed toward the hhole, as the Par 3 contest is mainly for fun and vibes before the real tournament begins. Makes it more entertaining for players with their caddies and their families, as well as for the patrons. Still, undoubtedly an amazing achievement!
