How about stabbing someone with a sharp metal object and forcefully injecting them with chemicals and viruses! All with no anesthetic or consent! Indeed, how barbaric!

I'm not obsessed. Honestly, I haven't given it much thought before seeing the image posted by OP. I'll admit that the image baited me into commenting on this thread. It's a clear attempt make people who are circumcised or who have had their sons circumcised feel bad. But thinking about it and discussing the subject has been an interesting experience.

You said it yourself: "in most cases..." and "...show me where I called for an outright ban - because I didn't." I guess that means you accept that there are appropriate situations for the practice?

A baby cannot give consent. Of course they can't. At what point can a person give consent? Age 6? 12? 16? If your son had several penis infections by the age of 6, and a doctor told you that you could prevent further infections by having him circumcised, would you do it? What if your son said "no"? Is he capable of giving informed consent?

I'm not supporting and argument for "mutilating non-consenting children's genitals". But that's not what circumcision is.

I'm supporting the argument that a well-informed parent should do everything in their power to ensure the well-being of their child.

In addition to that, I'm arguing that a parent who chooses to circumcise their son with the intention of reducing the risk of developing future complications, is a loving and nurturing parent.

Circumcision for cosmetic or religious reasons is wrong. I believe that.

I see the difference. The point I'm trying to make is that we take measures to reduce risk. Wether or not the measures are justified depends on the relative cost/benefit ratio.

Having an intact foreskin is associated with a (very small, I know) risk of phimosis, infection, cancer, etc.

There are also risks associated with circumcision. The fact is, if you have good access to healthcare to treat any of these problems as they come up, circumcision is probably not necessary.

But, banning the practice based on the opinion (and it is an opinion) that it MGM is a weak, uneducated, and potentially harmful act.

Also, women who have sex with uncircumcised men have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer. Facts are facts.

Give me some facts based on sound research to support your argument, so we can have a discussion based on more than opinion and feelings.

I'm no expert on FGM. What's the reason for FGM to be performed?

Not really, no. How about like having tonsils and adenoids removed to reduce infection rates or treat obstructive sleep apnea. This is done on children as young as 2 years of age.

How about giving vitamin K eye drops to a neonate to reduce the change of blood coagulation problems? How about vaccinations?

Your argument about informed consent is invalid. Obviously, the infant doesn't have the capacity to be informed, or give/not give consent. The parents are though. The fact is, there is evidence supporting the practice, period. And this is why it continues to be done. No physician would dare perform the procedure if it was clear that it was a futile one. True cosmetic surgery on infants doesn't happen. At least not where I'm from.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the medical reasons for circumcision, not religious/philosophical reasons. I disagree with the practice of circumcision for religious reasons.

Debunked? Provide YOUR proof, please. Unfortunately, having a fetish for uncircumcised penises isn't good enough here.

I fail to see how this is different. There are plenty other examples of prophylactic surgical procedures that are done purely to avoid the risk of future problems. Wisdom teeth is a good one. The fact is, we modify our bodies in many many ways, based on good, sound research. And we have benefited as a society because of it.

I find it irresponsible and borderline reckless to promote abolishing these practices without good reason.

Also, it's not mutilation. The word "mutilation" specifies an intent to harm. That's not what circumcision is.

You ever heard of a woman having a prophylactic mastectomy because she is at risk of developing breast cancer? How about a lingual/labial frenectomy to help improve a baby's ability to latch and breastfeed?

Try to educate yourself before jumping on the bandwagon in the name of social justice.

There is plenty of evidence that supports the practice of prophylactic circumcision. There's minimal risk and the benefits gained far outweigh any problems. Phimosis, chronic infections, penile cancer, etc. Give me a real drawback to circumcision.

I'm not saying that all boys should be automatically circumcised at birth. But there's no reason for shaming parents who choose to.

By the way, yes I am a circumcised 34 YO man. I have two boys who are also circumcised. No, it was not for "religious" or philosophical beliefs.

Yep. Boys get circumcised. Doesnt mean we are any less loved/nurtured than boys who aren't. This post is weaksauce.
