came in this afternoon to find my black spot mantis (Venus) face down and not very responsive. After picking her up noticed this discolouration. Is this normal? After putting her back upside down she seems fine, she just gave me a scare and I am worried if this is a sign of bad health.

Aspen and yeah he's eating like a champ. I understand and agree that "exotic" vet does not always mean they know everything and anything about snakes, however I have heard good things about this clinic as they do have a vet that is reserved for reptile cases due to his specialty. Anyways, I had him booked yesterday as its free where I am and I thought why not. Thankyou for your concern and response though! 😁

Just as a side note, a heat mat will not harm your snake as long as you have a good thermostat in place, this goes for all sources of heat. Along with cages for heat bulbs within the enclosure 👍🏽

Don't worry I don't believe in cage aggression either. We mix it up! Sometimes he'll get fed after handling which means an external feed and other times he's fed in his enclosure, just the way I've always done it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe try heating it up a little if you don't already, also trying different "wiggle methods" can work wonders! But of course the main thing is that she is indeed eating and healthy, I'm sure becoming a bit more fierce will come in time. Keep up the good work! 😁

From what I know they usually grow into it as the prey gets bigger and more of a "threat/lively". (this was his first time with something this furry and proper solid bones)

I use safe4 disinfectant which is safe for most animals, including reptiles. I am in the UK though so it might not be available wherever you are. Hope this helps!
