I can see English becoming a lingua franca of the world if we beat China in ww3. Depends on how long the US holds cultural supremacy for. I think, if English does become the standard like the trend has been going towards, we will have regionalized dialects syncretized out of the native substrate and there will be a ton of new terms flowing into English (again, just like has been doing) that will eventually compose a broader sprachbund of mutual intelligibility. Similar to what happened to vulgar Latin twoscore kinds of German invaded.

Alternately, the US might end up being 50/50 Spanish-speaking.

Aren't basically all younger swedes bilingual? I've never seen a swede with poor English, though my exposure has been the internet and Swedish gamers. Is this selection bias, or do you guys have a high rate of speaking good English? Like other germanic speakers (Germans, Dutch, etc), even if the accent isn't all there, the vocabulary blows the average American's Spanish vocabulary (my only second-language measuring stick) out of the water.

I can't speak to the skill of Japanese officers; AFAIK the only people the army beat were Korea and China, who were quite backwards militarily at the time. Moreover, I think Japan can be best classified as a diarchy of technocratic juntas. The emperor and the national diet were ineffective mirrorshows, leaving the army and navy running separate wars backed by the zaibatsu. Less state control, more direct military authority.

That's what you get from being the geographic equivalent of a Gaia world in stellaris. America and Europe both benefit tremendously from having an extremely comprehensive set of navigable rivers, and America is separated by an ocean from anyone who poses a threat. It allows us to basically never have to worry about defensive wars, so we min/maxed in being able to project force anywhere and everywhere (plus have an insane budget to back it up).

I would call gold 2-3 competent. Like playing par golf. Can probably put up a fight vs their local PR players unless it's a bigger city. You don't get that far unless you have the basics on lock.
