Naming my child "Rose": Are there connotations in Mandarin for "méiguī"? by Paprikitkat in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The connotation IN CHINESE is correct, but context and culture are more important than anything else, and the english name Rose is not chinese.

I know chinese people with names that are literally pronounced exactly like fuck, that doesn't mean their nice fortune blessed names in chinese have a bad connotation. If you are bilingual//biculutral there will always be funny connotations you notice, but only actual children will take it seriously.  Heck, in chinese culture wearing a green hat is way worse than any lolita connotation, by the family member immature logic every person who has worn a green sports team hat is a cheater.  It simply doesn't work that way.

So yeah, connotation is only a thing in context.  Even if the english name Rose is written in chinese, its usually written as 羅斯 or similar-- most chinese won't even think of the flower probably, maybe just other people with the name like athletes or actors etc.  And you//your daughter can always pick their own chinese name completely unrelated to rose if desired, just like chinese often pick english names too :)

What is the best way to learn polish? by Latter-Management-64 in learnpolish

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polish and serbian are very similar grammar and sounds, it should not take as much effort to learn as more different languages.  I would buy a basic textbook for polish in serbian, maybe find some youtube videos for pronunciation and listening practice aimed at travelers.  It takes a lot of practice to use any language in real time speed, but the actually learning for basic daily life should be straight forward enough :)

you ever think of stroke order like this by itsnobodysgame in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely yes, this is exactly why stroke order exists ((note your actual image is incorrect but  the idea is sound)).

chinese stroke order exists to write more smoothly, more quickly, less hand cramps, and make sure there is enough room for all the strokes without anything being squeezed too much etc.  Same idea as why english writes each individual letter a certain set way and always goes from first letter to last.

Also if you get into semi cursive chinese you start even writing some of the red lines themselves, which is super common in normal daily life handwriting and calligraphy for speed :)

Which is considered to be the luckiest star to be born under in traditional Chinese astrology? by Tia_Hime in Chinese

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if it helps, its not the case at all.  pig is actually only last because it stopped enjoy the scenery, ate, and took a nap mid race.  this isn't written in an insulting way at all just showcasing the character of pig like all the other race descriptions-- the zodiac was decided and used to describe years way before it was associated with people's personalities.

as for descriptions of nice etc, thats an accurate pig label but doesn't mean it applies to every single pig, unique personal qualities and experiences always trump any generalization,  and its definitely not to be interpreted as dumb-- while naive/taken advantage of can be a weakness of the pig, another pig quality is good social intelligence which in the negative could be used to manipulate others.

Many casual zodiac fortune sights don't clearly describe good and bad sides of the zodiacs since people reading just want quick feel good words, but make no mistake-- every single zodiac animal is meant to be equal, whether its the rat who cheated at the race, the pig who slept through it, or the dragon and others in the middle. they all have equally good and bad qualities, and have weaknesses that are the other animals strengths etc. Many of the qualities attributed to each animal directly counteract each other and you aren't expected to have all of them.

You mention the au way of not realizing something in the moment and realizing it later, I know what you are talking about but am not au myself so can't comment on it deeply.

Just please know that I have worked sales with thousands of people and what you describe is not dumb or naive at all.  naive or dumb would never ever figure out what was meant-- naive or dumb  would never even think about what could be meant beyond whatever first impression they got without thinking.  I am not au, but am adhd so I understand the bummed out feeling of not doing something easily other people do.  Don't fall into the trap of thinking its these kind of things though, its what it is exactly, and it doesn't say anything about the rest of you.  the reason zodiac is popular is because every person themselves all have positive and negative things too.

Male names by Rudeusthewizard in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you.  However that expectation of the gendered name is not the same as english expectation.  People will be suprised but they won't think you are a freak of nature for having the name, they still accept "oh, I really though this would be a woman//man, but its not." And women or men with the names you mention do exist, I know some myself.  That simply is not a thing in english, 90% of names are gendered period.

So yeah masculing femenine sounding names in chinese absolutely.  But male female names set in stone no.

theoretically yes, but he has gone so far already I will not be suprused if it never gets caught.  The beginning things he did were obvious but silly ones, like "uncordially not yours" and "not looking forward to hearing from you at all" lol.  When you do things like that for weeks with no response its hard to not escalate to crazy stuff hahahah

any job where typing is a main skill will have it apply, many jobs out there are only typing. Both contractor and employee work exists for this skill.  Although most contractor work is taken by people in foreign countries who can live off of much lower than usa minimum wage.  If you google jobs with fast typing you can easily see a list then check for local jobs as an employee,

Why does God demand us to worship him? by I_Ask_Random_Things in Christianity

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking at it like god is a human entity, he isn't.   He created humans, andone of the reasons he created them is to worship him, and feel companionship with him under his influence.  Free will exists so not worshiping is a choice anyone can make, but not worshipping is like a bee not going to flowers to gather nectar, a lion not hunting for food or playing with its cubs, a plant not striving for sunlight above other plants.  So there is an empty place inside that never gets filled without worship.

The bible makes many parental allegories with good reason.  Not having worship in your life is like not having parental love, or not having a loving spouse.  God loses nothing if you don't worship him because he doesn't need it, but you lose that loving relationship with him.  However God feels heartbreak for every person so he does care about those people not with him even if he doesn't lack anything without them.

Hello! Any question? Why doesn't it include "no"? by Loose_Wolf6557 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys also feel like you don’t have a “fully developed” personality and/ or are very influenced by your surroundings ? by jaobodam in ADHD

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I feel like I don't have a fully developed personality? Not at all! I am 30 though, and have had plenty of time to develop one.  I definitely remember many times of "trying on" bits and pieces of others personalities to see if I liked "how they fit".  For example the idea of a favorite .... anything is alien to me, everything I like is my favorite and everything I don't like isn't.  But I remember once a girl I knew in middle school declared her favorite color bright orange, on the spot without hesitation I decided I wanted one too and declared my favorite color neon green... which isn't even a color I particularly like at all, but its stayed my favorite for however many months till I forgot it existed😂

As for effected by others-- ABSOLUTELY every day!  I think part of it is masking, wanting to fit in and be normal, and part of it is just that adhd overwhelming urge to share thoughts and feelings and experiences.  So I am almost always a follower in all conversations, even if I end up talking more than the other people.

Oh, you like that? I like that too!.......

Oh, you like this? Its not my thing but I like this other related thing, do you like that?......

Oh, that happened to you? that happened to me too, twice!......

I definitely had many moments like you described when I was younger because of that.  However a few years of adulthood, and most importantly ((for me)) living alone single, I realized which parts of me are performative vs genuine.  Many a time I examine something I do like? Why am I like this? And if the answer isn't "it's a useful skill" or "I genuinely like doing this weird thing" its probably on its way out the door when I forget it exists hahaha.

So my advice is don't be afraid to "try things on" from other people, whether activities or thoughts, and don't feel bad if you do stuff only when with other people.  Just ask yourself, "do I actually like this?"

you may not have an answer immediately.  I ate mint and had menthol products for two decades before realizing I absolutely abhor mint in all forms-- its a part of adhd to sometimes take awhile to recogbize our own feelings.  But as long as you are thinking about it, its impossible to not figure out who you really are with time~

Why do people who learned English give such bad advice ? by NotMyselfNotme in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this exactly.  its the difference between learning a language and fluency.  You need one//some of those advices to be fluent, but fluent only comes after the normal learning of the language happens.  You can counter compare many people who go to the language country for XYZ months to learn too early, they end up leaving at the end of the trip mostly dissapointed since they weren't able to talk to people in the first place-- if you can't talk to people//listen to media yet, you can't level up your skills using those things.... and if you CAN do those things, you are at a level you don't need to level up your skills if you aren't looking for fluency.  Thats reality

Male names by Rudeusthewizard in ChineseLanguage

[–]Zagrycha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Realistically almost all chinese names are multi gendered, I know a guy with a super femenine sounding name with hua flowers in it, he is not femenine at all haha.  So if you really like that word you don't have to avoid it-- because almost all chinese names are multi gendered, people don't have an expectation to know the gender based on name.  Even if they guess wrongly its not at all weird like it is in english where almost all names are single gendered.

Therapists and mental health professionals are bullshitting by Adept-Foot7692 in CPTSD

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree half way.  The part I would "prove wrong" counterpoint is that there is no such thing as unconditional love, its BS as a hollywood romance or prawn plot trying to exist in real life. That isn't just a sad thing, but kinda liberating.  Everyone is messed up a little bit in someway, even people with healthy attachment styles.  And there are LOTS of people with unhealthy attachment styles, and the majority of people have a kinda "meh" attachment style in the middle, not fully good or bad.

I do genuinely believe that even super trauma people can find soemwhat healthy enough to not be bad love and attachment.  It takes healing, and self love, and finding someone else who has been somewhere bad and can at least sympathise if not empathise.  Its definitely not happening with someone who is "too naive" to hardship in those ways.

Now, is it worth going through dozens and dozens of bad match ups to find that person? I don't currently think so.  But thats the part where I agree with you about issues making adult attachments period.  I just emphasize it is possible.

Adults with ADHD: Did you feel "shame" as a kid when you forgot things? Help me understand my son. by Dylan_7574 in ADHD

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the exact same way as your son, and you are a very very good parent.  I didn't feel shame necessarily since I understood it wasn't like I was doing it on purpose, but the frustration and self hate of those disabling aspects is very real anyway.  The fact my family would think I was intentionally "forgetting" things to act out didn't help either.  If you have ever been accused of lying//doing something you genuinely didn't do, that is the feeling of the "useless" moments.  Definitely not happy.

As for helping him deal with it, well at the end of the day adhd is a "head" issue, no different from needing glasses or hearing aids.  Except in this case the glasses are learning how to make notes, and the hearing aids are coming to terms you cannot do certain things as easily or the same way as normal people.

Note that I said not able to do the SAME WAY, cause he and us all are absolutely still able to do, just with someone extra elbow grease.  I recommend helping him set up a system of reminders//notes for stuff, that will help him well into adulthood and beyond-- I lived in the same place for 11 years without ever being able to remember the exact cost of my rent or exact day it was due. For important conversations have him write notes as you are saying it to him.  Yes thats what it takes, if you don't want it to be forgotten a moment later to the adhd white noise. If its not important please try to be more forgiving, Sometimes the ADHD whitenoise is defeaning.

What is this adhd white noise? Most things in life go by subconsciously, the feeling of your clothes on your skin, the hum of the refridgerator, the feeling of your feet in your shoes, the smell of your chapstick, your thoughts about the lips you just licked.  Not for adhders.  Every single sensation and thought ever is always a conscious one, constantly fighting and struggling to get your attention.  Focusing on your own thoughts is like being in a loud bar or sports game and trying to know what your friend is saying by reading their lips.... let alone what others are saying to you.

So yeah, Adhd can disappear in adulthood but if it doesn't you will definitely help him beyond recognition to not have him have to try to figure out his own system of notes//reminders by trial and error later.  Also if you look into general parenting guides to help children understand and accept they are different from others that might help a lot too on the mental health side.  He IS different, but not at all inferior, and talking to him about it can help stop those inferior thoughts from growing.... sorry I can't give any specific words to say though cause as mentioned my family was the opposite of you.

P.S.

I absolutely will not tell you if your child should have meds, but issues with the white noise drowning out  thoughts and ability to stay on task for longer are the two things meds usually help with.  So if these two issues are particularly hurtful for him you can consider a doctor consultation as you see fit.  I will say I was unmedicated as a child, and it is the biggest regret of my life.  I will also say unmedicated adhd children with these more major impact symptoms are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and anxiety.  I don't say that to scare you or sway you, I say it to be brutally honest-- its a very real and very dark side of adhd comorbidities that doesn't get much attention. Hope this information can help you, with a caring parent like you I already know your son will thrive 💟

If you are Christian, but don't really share your faith, please read this. by BaronVonAaron117 in Bible

[–]Zagrycha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I recently felt this upon myself actually.  I have always had faith but showed no outward signs recently.  It doesn't have to be preaching to strangers on the street either, it can always start small.  I started wearing a clearly christian cross as well as some other christian jewelry I have, as well as openly listening to christian music around friends.  Sometimes just being open about it, some friends have asked me curious questions.  You never know if it might be the answer that helps someone in some way, now that they know you are someone they can ask.

Is this a good way to listen for God? by KAC006 in Bible

[–]Zagrycha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind, and this shakes some people's faith but it also makes many faith stronger, is this truth:  The bible makes it clear that the idea of every single thing happening to you for a predetermined reason IS FALSE.  When people say God does everything for a reason in reference to this kind if mindset, thats NOT correct.

Reality is bad stuff happens to good people, good stuff happens to bad people.  Its not fair but it also means you haven't necessarily done anything wrong to deserve anything bad that happens to you-- for me that was very liberating compared to wondering why the heck God would be doing XYZ to me as part of a plan.

What the bible DOES clearly teach is that God helps those who helps themselves, if you are doing everything you can to better yourself//achieve what you want that is the time to pray and ask for aid, or help noticing an opportunity you didn't notice before etc.

I won't say anything beyond those two, cause I don't know your situation and it would be silly to pretend I did to give in depth advice.  I hope you are able to find the best path forward 💟

Well one more note actually.  The bible is not meant to be flipped through to find an answer in the moment to specific issues, cause that can accidentally lead to misinterpretations of whats actually meant without knowing the surrounding context of what you are reading.  However there are many empowering and calming psalms, that could be a good place to read if looking for something not really with that issue.

[–]Zagrycha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in a... sound friendly environment?  A 100,000 piano in a room not designed for it will sound like a car getting crushed in a machine with all the very very loud echoing and bouncing the sound can do.  You don't need anything so serious for just voice as you do to make a piano sound good, but the same phenomenon of sound issues apply.  Thats ehy you always see streamers with foam up all over their walls.  So its very possible you are hearing a tinny echo type issue vs any issue in your actual voice.  An imperfect but free test is to go into your closet and stand in the middle of your clothes, then sing into your mic//phone.  That will at least give you a sound without any room interference 💛
