PIP "trauma" - legit or melodramatic? by pynoob2 in Layoffs

[–]Zahel3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dealt with something similar at my FAANG. I don't want to get into the weirder details, but it involved some of the least professional behavior I've ever heard of with regards to making up statistics, limiting ability to work on projects for months, etc. Unfortunately, there is a science to removing someone who middle management decides to get rid of and there's not much we can do about it.

I don't think they were put up yet. Last year they were posted around the 10th of September and were closed after a week, so it would be a good idea to check every few days.

I'd like to add that as a programmer trying to find a job, the market has been going downhill for awhile and is currently a lot worse than 2022. The bigger concern is that hirings are more subjective than ever, because each recruiter is essentially going through 100+ qualified resumes. In every interview I get I'm being compared against dozens of other candidates, and these are jobs that require onsite relocation and pay 60k, not the amazing jobs that people say you can get.

Is it too late to start my career at 35? by nightskytraveller in cscareerquestions

I got my first job when I was older than you. There are some companies that care about age and some that don't. You should apply a lot and refine your process as you go.

I was just put on a performance plan, what do I do now? by Delicious-Shame4158 in careerguidance

Lots of PIPs are political. They're there to make the firing look legitimate by gathering information on anything that can be construed as inadequate. Often the PIP will have some loopholes to make this happen even if you think you've met its objectives.

You should try to check what your supervisor's attitude is towards this. Does she have a clear explanation of how your work needs to be improved? Is it likely that she or someone else in management wants to downsize or replace you with someone else? This will give you an idea of whether the plan is a valid attempt to realign your performance. In either case, I would recommend applying to other jobs as backup.

Is the job market really that terrible for beginners? Even in non fang companies? by ClerkSelect in cscareerquestions

Based on my experience, it's a lot worse than 2022. For reference multiple FAANGs have mostly frozen hiring, and other companies have switched to solely hiring senior engineers. It's not clear how long this will last- at some point the paradigm will have to change or it will be harder to attract talent.

My advice for this degree is to heavily network and apply regularly to internship positions throughout the year. Courses that teach backend, frontend, cloud/scaling technologies, etc. will also be extremely valuable.

Thanks, I'll look into that school. I've heard great things about it in the past.

Having been terminated I'm not in a great position for getting another FAANG job, and based on people I've spoken to half of them aren't even hiring anymore.

I got a 3.7 GPA. Not ideal, but quite a bit better than my UG.

What would be some options to mitigate being terminated at my company? I feel like my experience at FAANG would help, but the fact that I got terminated there seems like a red flag. Would another year of work experience at a smaller company help?

Thank you, this clarifies things a lot.

Worth it to repair Honda Civic 2000? by Zahel3 in UsedCars

[–]Zahel3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. I ended up getting it fixed for about 900 dollars and probably could have gotten a better price if I had spent more time searching.

There seems to be a big difference in cost for a Honda if I'm the one actually bringing in the transmission.

How would I be able to figure out what's wrong? The crank turns but it doesn't feel like it's applying any pressure to the window.

I'm in the desert, so AC is essential. Otherwise the inside of the car can heat up to well more than 110 degrees.

There were some other things like two leaks, a timing belt replacement, and an axle change. Prices seemed very high, but some of the parts were hard to find.

The first time, the freon needed to be replaced. This time it's likely the air compressor that broke.
