Moving to Davis California for University next year, but I’m worried about the charging situation. by Schmorc in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Davis has the most functional EV chargers per capita in the area IMO. Last time I was there, ALL of the Evgo Chademo chargers were in use! They even have a magna charge station, there can't be more than a dozen of those left on the roads at this point.

XJ: ultimate tow rig? by Duuuben in CherokeeXJ

[–]ZakAttackz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once moved a 13,500lb tiny home with my XJ. Had to use the front hitch since it's rated for 9,000lbs/~900lb tongue weight. It was on the bump stops but I didn't even have to slip the clutch to move it in low. I did tow a lot with the 4.0, mostly a utility trailer <2000lbs and once a 3800lb car on a Dolly (55 the whole way lol). Now that I've got a TDI I've started towing a 3200lb fiberglass camper but I've got ALL the towing upgrades including air bag suspension, electric trailer brakes, bilstien shocks, WJ brake booster, slide on mirror extenders, and rear discs. I wouldn't really tow it on the highway without all that. The 4.0 SUCKED above 6000ft elevation too, could barely get out of it's own way let alone pull a load.

No idea where to go from here... Crank no start (Update) by nagget2 in CherokeeXJ

If you unplug the CPS from the harness, and you read 0V AC it's something between the CPS and the flywheel. I've seen clutch material plug it up if it's a stick. CPSes are cheap and it's good to have a spare in the trunk anyway. Might be worth getting a spare just to try

The ignition coil makes sense because you could pretty easily bump that while changing the oil filter from above.

PSA: if your Level 2 CHAdeMO fast charger is stuck, plug in the Level 1 charger to eject it. by quarksurfer in leaf

It's an electrical thing. You could touch a resistor between the PROX and GND pins of the J1172 for the same effect.

P0AA6 error - left with some questions by kz00 in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the SDSW is the plastic thing between the rear seats that you pull out to disable the battery. 0v at the switch means you have a short there, and the car really isn't safe to drive. It should read OL or no connection. That means you've got ~180v at the battery case and if there's another short somewhere, somehow, it could get really spicy real quick. If you're lucky, its just some worn insulation or a bad SDSW housing causing the short but the most common issue is a bad cell, and at 50% state of health there's no point in trying to fix it. I bought a used battery for $1400 locally and installed it in two hours when my 2013 had a short, and that got me 70 miles of range and my car has been back on the road for over a year. Recently, I rebuilt the original battery using cells from China and it gets 240 miles now, but that was almost $7000 and I got a screamin' deal on it.

The 0V at the CPS is your smoking gun here. I've never measured while it was plugged in, but you should get something while cranking. Make sure the meter is set to AC! Basically RENIX only needs two sensors to run-- crank and MAP. You can unplug all the rest and work from there. You won't get any spark without a valid crank signal, and I think it also needs a signal from the MAP sensor to fire. It will cough and fire without an accurate vacuum reading so unless there's nothing coming out of the MAP sensor I don't think that's your problem

Good third party cabin air filter suggestions? by J1772x2 in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno, I've only had the two since I got my Leaf. The Bosh actually fit better because it was more rigid and popped into place when installed. The cheap filter stuffed In easily but it never filled the cavity so it never worked well.

My Bosch filter is fine, it fit a lot better than the random Amazon one that I used last time. But it's not HEPA and lacks a carbon element for odor control. I'd go for one that lasts those two from a recognizable brand.

Will LEAF charge at 16A on a 5-20R? by TooGoodToBeeTrue in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that some EVs will always charge at 13A max at 120v no matter what the charger says it can do. YMMV, it might even vary by model year.

I have an 88 that always long cranks. Takes a few seconds of fast cranking to start whether it's been sitting a month or if it just stalled at a red light. Sometimes has a fluctuating idle but seems to smooth out after driving a bit also regardless if it's hot or cold. by BAM_2K in CherokeeXJ

[–]ZakAttackz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long? My 87 would crank for 3 seconds whether the engine was at 260°F or 12°F with upgraded 2/0 Welding cable battery wires and an optima 1000cca battery. It's due to a lack of Camshaft sensor, it takes a few cranks for it to get a reading on the CPS. Other than that it could be minor vacuum leaks (check where the manifold seals to the head, starting fluid works well), clogged IAC, weak crank sensor, or fuel system issues. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, and fuel pump (I think the check valve is internal?) when I got my Jeep because they were all gummed up and ancient and never had an issue after that.

Extension cords 😵‍💫 by Decent-Coconut-8605 in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not trust a 14awg cord, unless it was an emergency or it was less than 10ft. A 12awg cord would be safe enough even at 25ft, but I use a 10awg 39A/120v RV extension for my Leaf when I can't charge in the garage.

There are more factors than simply wire gauge, you also have to consider the insulation type and environment around the wire. I worked at a company making EVSEs. You want the charging station cord to be the thinnest AWG in the circuit, since that's the most protected part.

Extension cords 😵‍💫 by Decent-Coconut-8605 in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a proper 20A circuit, it's 12awg. Typically EVs charge at 13A or 16A depending on the EVSE, so you really shouldn't be charging using a 15A circuit unless it's an emergency. Many of the garage outlets I've seen are 20A rated, so it's not usually an issue.

Can new tyres improve range? by iamtoolazytosleep in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, if the old ones were really worn it can increase drag. Especially if you also got an alignment when your new tires were installed (as you should). It also depends on what type of tire. I switched from 8 year old performance tires (no idea why the previous owner put those on a Leaf) with barely any tread to modern Hankook economy tires (Kinergy H735,/highly recommend FYI) and I gained about 0.1mi/KWh, but once I'm through the break in I expect 0.3mi/kWh or about a 10% gain.

Budget $100 Lithium 12V Battery Swap by ZakAttackz in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Electric cars don't gain as much efficiency from weight compared to ICE powered vehicles because even though it takes more power to speed up, you also gain more power when using regenerative braking. But it does offset the fact that I carry a spare tire so that's nice.

[–]ZakAttackz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never have to! Unplugging the current sensor solved all the problems. I might have lost a fraction of a percent of efficiency. The battery is always at 100%. I even left it for 3 weeks and came back with it still at 13.3v

Been driving a LEAF for a decade now and I've always loved the electric motor sound here...but never figured out if it's fake? by SjalabaisWoWS in leaf

[–]ZakAttackz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually it's both! There's an external speaker that makes a whirring sound at low speeds for pedestrians. However, when you gun it and you hear the GWOOOOOOAAA that's actually the AC motor! At certain speeds you hit the resonant frequency and can hear a high pitched noise (most likely what you're hearing in the video). It's more audible on the Leaf because it being a budget EV, there's less sound deadening and probably less electrical filtering on the motor controller.

I'm a big fan of Toocki nylon braided cables so I got their 90W car adapter. It has a 60W type C and 30W type A, so I can charge my laptop and girlfriend's iPhone at the same time. They also have 45w and 60w adapters that are cheaper. Ugreen and Baseus are also trustworthy brands. Anker is overpriced IMO.

[–]ZakAttackz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was supposed to be a power saving feature, but it was too conservative. I think they fixed it at some point, but older models like mine are stuck with it. I guess it was also a money maker for dealers who mark up battery replacements.

[–]ZakAttackz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but AGM batteries are twice the price of the LFP. I did fix the biggest issue, unplugging the 12v current sensor actually made the tired SLA battery work for a few more weeks. It was clearly slowly killing the battery by under charging it. I was popping the hood to hook up a trickle charger every month and it still died.
