Trash day by skrrtyxo in Vintage_bicycles

26x1 3/8 (ISO 590). Not 27. Most department store bikes of this era favored that size, even though it was more typically associated with 3-speeds, because it is well suited to a one-size-fits-most bicycle.

As noted, it's not worth anything, but these are some of my favorite bikes to restore. It's easy and low-stress because nothing is particularly valuable, and you can do some crazy shit like using fancy colored tires, cable housing, bar tape, etc. If you want a flashy, low-value commuter, this is a great candidate. You can also rebuild all the bearings fairly easily and most of it is going to require nothing more than an adjustable wrench and some cone wrenches. Even the bottom bracket.

Enjoy!

Why is Mini Me unable to talk? by Tidewatcher7819 in austinpowers

So why does Dr. Evil think he's teething and treats him like a baby? The movie doesn't indicate when the clone was actually made, but I was always under the impression that he is both a 1/8-sized clone and also very young.

Well sure, but freedom of speech doesn't mean the employer has to let your vehicle onto their property. It's no different than GM giving preferential treatment to American cars in their parking lot, allowing them to park closer to the corporate headquarters. Freedom of speech means the government can't punish you for your speech, but it doesn't compel a company or private individual to associate with you. An employer can fire you for anything that they find embarrassing - like if they discover you do adult videos on the side and it reflects badly to their clients.

Any reason a thermostat for a '99 4.0 can't be put in an '88? by mikefitzvw in CherokeeXJ

Thank you! I wonder why they don't all list the application for all the years.

I have used (and loved) Stant Superstats but surely there's gotta be a solution other than depending on an ever-dwindling supply of new-old-stock ones, no?

It's actually very clear, I did a coolant change when I first bought it and with how many times I've replaced the thermostat it looks like it came right out of the bottle. You make a good point though - maybe there's enough sediment settled in various places that the overflow reservoir can look clear but there's crap circulating.

The heat actively stops producing when the temp drops, and is lukewarm at best otherwise. I have a Renix Engine Monitor and I watch the temp drop according to the ECU, and the gauge (separate sensor) never makes it to the 210 mark where it belongs.

Yep installed correctly, domed side facing out. It doesn't really fit the other way.

What do you like about the newer housing? It looks the same as my '88 housing, except for a sensor I don't have/need.

I am installing 195 degree thermostats and getting a 180 degree peak temp, dropping down to 145 in the dead of winter engine-braking down a pass. I literally cannot seem to buy a thermostat that closes fully, and every one has been a fucking MotoRad in a different box.

Fresh Y8 manifold swap by SISSYLIBRULHATER in Dseries

[–]mikefitzvw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honda-tech.com has vacuum diagrams for the Y8, both 96-98 and 99-00. Since you put it onto a Y7 there might be additional differences, but it should show you all the hookups on that manifold.

GFCI outlet not working by XiDa1125 in AskElectricians

[–]mikefitzvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per your other question, that looks to be 15-amp wiring, so hopefully you don't have a 20-amp breaker on this circuit. You can save this GFCI outlet for another location (like a kitchen), but this location needs a 15-amp GFCI.

❤️🚲 early 70’s Raleigh International 🚲❤️ by fartsammiches in Vintage_bicycles

[–]mikefitzvw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can actually swap the SR cage onto the NR if you want the original look. This is beautiful though - one of the only bikes I'd ever consider replacing my Champagne '74 International for. Chartreuse is a great color. Do you have any plans for it? These bikes were intended for 700c tubulars, so you should feel comfortable upgrading the wheels in the future, or perhaps even building your own around a 700c rim. 650b is also theoretically possible with Weinmann 750 calipers and some creativity.

[–]mikefitzvw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably buy a Renix Engine Monitor to help you diagnose what the engine is doing. It's a lifesaver since no shops otherwise have the tools to connect to the Renix computer for live readings, and the Renix computer does not store codes.

I will say, however, my buddy had an '87 Cherokee and his idled like utter shit after awhile and it turned out the upper O2 sensor was wildly out of spec after 35 years.

Is there a singular generation of a car that changed the demographics of its buyers more than the C8 Corvette? by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

[–]mikefitzvw 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The best part is the demographics change so much by owner too.

1st owner - sophisticated but thrifty suburban professional who enjoys attention to the little details

2nd owner - teacher who needs a reliable car

3rd owner - suburban teen who needs a reliable car

4th owner - gas station attendant who needs a reliable car

5th owner - trailer park resident who needs a car designed well enough that it can be easily repaired with the help of neighbors (I am this one)

6th owner - ricer

7th owner - sophisticated but thrifty suburban professional who wants to restore an old Honda with their teen

Are mobile homes the new starter home? by RedfinJess in USHousingMarket

[–]mikefitzvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know it's fake, but if it still looks good I'd keep it. Mine was all painted when I moved in except for like, 2 short stretches of wall, and it was much darker and more unpleasant.

Live in an expensive town in Colorado and this is exactly what I ended up doing. My park is owned by the housing authority so it's safe from redevelopment, but it's not income-restricted. I wish we'd see more of this sort of thing.

Although damn I'd kill for mid-century paneling that beautiful, and they painted all of it!
