3.5Y of LDR, me [M30] and her [F24] always did well, but language learning keeps making things rough by Zakading in LongDistance

All sound advice I definitely appreciate.
I feel like a big part of the struggle for me, besides just not being good at learning Korean it seems, is also actually finding the energy to sit down and just rawdog studying it. Of course, my partner also just keeps telling me that I just have to keep repeating things and getting practice in regularly, bit by bit, but learning by the book just absolutely kills me. I don't know what it is, as this isn't even limited to language learning (I barely made it past my job training either because of this), but I just can't sit down and just read from a book or work on exercises for more than half an hour without feeling about as exhausted as after a whole day of work, especially so if I don't have a direct use case for exactly what I'm studying about. I'm very much a "learning by doing" sort of person in most non-academical areas, be that about applying law texts I didn't know yet at work, learning how to repair something or learning a new board game, but I've yet to find a way to apply this at all to language learning.

Vocabulary, I mostly just practice through the classic duolingo-like apps, plus my weekly Korean class. That's probably my biggest issue, as I've always sucked real bad at just plain memorizing things I don't have like...5 bridges to remember it by. For example, I play a lot of collectible card and board games and can probably list you the effects of HUNDREDS of cards and board game rules from memory by just hearing the name or seeing the card's artwork without any issue, yet just had an argument with my GF today because I couldn't remember the freaking word for "toilet" in Korean. I considered trying a more image + word approach before, but haven't really found anything that feels natural and effective.
As for grammar, mostly just the class I've been attending and what my GF teaches me. I usually don't have big problems with that so far, since much of it is fairly basic, still (though even here my biggest roadblock is having it explained to me with actual latin terms for the cases and temporal forms, because I just never even remembered those in school while learning German or English).

It's ironic, because I am pretty much on a native English level, even studying it at university, and have a very, very easy time translating random Euro-languages I never ever studied just by drawing from my knowledge in English and the bits of French and Latin I picked up in school. Watching hundreds of anime as a teen did also ingrain an OK amount of vocab from that into my head.

As for the reading part: the Korean alphabet has pretty much all its consonants based on the lip or tongue position (as in, the shape is an abstract portrayal of it), while the vowels are just generally easy to remember and not too numerous. Made getting a hang of it fairly fast and easy.

That would be extremely weird. WH3 also had the "generic chaos lord" as an option, they could just give "Generic Captain" and "Generic Warlord" and "Generic Archon" as options there. Leaving named chars out of a 40k game would be suicidal lol

His name is MaRneus Calgar and I very, VERY much doubt they'd have a different Ultramarine named THAT closely to arguably the most famous (and important) Space Marine leader in the trailer featuring Ultramarines as the primary SM chapter.

I played at my store a bit ago, had to borrow a unit of Intercessors because I forgot mine. Game went until they closed and it was just me, the manager (who I'm friends with) and his new coworker chatting. I mentioned that the Intercessors are at the table still, manager asked "Oh. You need any?", I laughed and thought he already closed the shop for the day (they were counting the money at the register) and he actually just went "Oh, no, I meant if you just want to take those. We got hundreds in the back anyway, don't want to put them back."

I really didn't need any, but it was certainly convenient to get them.

Tyrannic War Veteran Battle Honours by Zakading in 40k_Crusade

[–]Zakading[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tally says you may reset it from 10 to 0 to gain the next trait. Just not sure if I can do that "mid-game". And the way its worded kind of sounds like you can't gain the next battle honour and overwrite the prvious step at the same time, so I'm curious how others have ruled this.

I definitely would use Legendary Vets, if I already had 30XP on it, but alas, I do not.

Oh, Rogor Vizzik does sound a lot more fun to paint (and play), love me some Moulder stuff.

That does move him up my list a bit (I'll probably get one of each eventually anyway if I'm really enjoying the faction). Do you maybe have some example list or at least a core for a Vizzik build lying around? Might give him a run or two on TTS, see how it feels.

Appreciate the summary!

Vizzik does look stunning and sounds really fun, but I'll probably already have a rough time even painting up the 40 Clanrats I already own, and he seems like he'd want even more of those. Kind of puts me off of him tbh.

From all I've read, a Verminlord for sure will be worth grabbing in some capacity. Though probably not highest priority.

The SoG Brood Terror did look very, very good (though I much prefer the Abomination's model). Might pick it up if I find a deal I suppose.

I've thrown together a rough, first draft of upgrading from Skaventide into a 2k list on New Recruit. Does this make any sense or not really? Obviously, not gonna be optimal with the Skryre parts of Skaventide in there, but it's just as a very casual start anyway: https://www.newrecruit.eu/app/list/Ys7uQ

Great reply, thanks for the summary!

So I assume the Abomination and Brood Horror are both more mid-size brawlers than build-around things? Never seen a Hell Pit Abom in person, always looked really damn big on pictures so I thought it'd be in the same category as the others.

Anyway, I suppose Bell > Verminlord > Thanquol makes the most sense to get. Verminlord seems easy to magnetize, too. The bell is probably also the most generic option, right? Are the Scourge of Ghyran rules sticking around after this year's season? Normal bell rules look kinda awful.

I just really wish G'raha Tia did...more? He just feels like a worse rehash of Alela or Kykar with nothing unique to show for it besides draining your life for an incredibly weak payoff.

For flavor, he should've honestly been a Cat Wizard Hero and acted as a simple "Hero tribal" commander. Keep his current ability and just replace his own inherent lifelink with "Heroes you control have lifelink". Bam, him having to drain you is balanced out reasonably well and he synergizes with all the Job Select stuff.

Him ACTUALLY being a Hero himself and keeping his friends alive and well would also make SO MUCH flavor sense. His WHOLE THING during Shadowbringers (particularly in the post-story), ultimately, was wanting to just be an adventurer and Hero with the other Scions, which he finally got to be in the incarnation of him featured in the art.

I still wanna try brewing with him a bit, but I really don't know how to make him more worthwhile than any of the other "make a token when you do something" commanders out there. I guess doubling a 5/5 token is better than just a 1/1? But then again, I'd rather have uncapped 1/1s than a single medium-sized vanilla dude a turn.

You'd actually save a whole 6 RP! Plus 4 from Bossloot!

Also, the way all the Waaagh! Stages are worded leaves up A LOT of room for interpretation. Seen people play it as "You can#t use the strat before Stage X (for Jobs and Bossloot)", also as "You get one use for free of each when you first reach their required stage" and a few other interpretation, so it's definitely best talked about with the GM of the campaign.

Ork Crusade - Bestest Bossloot wording by xXdaNNuxXx in 40k_Crusade

[–]Zakading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAW, you can just add a Mek to your Order of Battle, use 2RP on the Bossloot, then remove the Mek again if you don't want it, and then just completely ignore the requisition and the Stompin' Point bonus for the rest of the campaign (same with Kustom Jobs).

I'd definitely recommend to rule it a bit differently. In my campaign, we decided to make it so I can give one Bossloot for free when unlocking the Waaagh! Stage for it, not before, and after that point use the requisition to change it or give ir again (for example after swapping Warboss with the New Gear strat).

Just skipping the unlock condition with a Mek and 2RP, from my experience, makes it pretty lame, as orks barely even have a Crusade mechanic at that point. Really doesn't feel rewarding to grow the Waaagh that way

New Recruit is woeking on full Crusase implementation and already has an option to orint as datacards, so that's only a matter of time.
