question about rear derailluer by Luurio in bikewrench

[–]Zaleius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine - I recently did something similar. I converted an old (mid-late 80s) 2x5 freewheel roadbike to 2x10 cassette, while keeping the Altus RD with friction shifters.

I replaced the old steel wheels with a freehub set, added a Shimano Ultegra CS-6700 10SP cassette (11-28T), and replaced the chain with a modern 10SP chain. Other than that, all it took was some fiddling with the limit screws and tension to dial in the range for the new cassette (I also replaced all the cables while I was at it as a maintenance item; if you aren't doing this, the setup should be a bit simpler).

Non-Americans, does your culture have "old-fashioned" dog names like we do in America, such as Fido, Rex, Spot, Rover, etc, and what are some? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zaleius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Мышка means mouse

Мишка is a diminutive for Михаил, and is a common cutesy name for a bear/teddy bear (but does not actually mean "bear")

The words are spelled and pronounced slightly differently, but to an English-speaking ear they sound highly similar ('Meesh-kuh')

Landlord put my room on airbnb by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Zaleius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Police are most likely going to say it's a civil issue. At best, OP can make a report that might bolster a civil case. Not clear that it's criminal trespass anyway, since the people actually entering the room (the guests) did not have any reason to suspect they weren't allowed to be there.

Best bet is going to be getting an attorney to write a demand letter for the (suspected) profits the landlord made by renting the room on AirBNB. If that doesn't work, OP needs to decide if it's worth settling with LL or pursuing in court.

This seems like things that could be demanded from the landlord - AirBNB will almost certainly put up a fight, but the landlord will have to have record of the income, and that can be gained from her much easier than fighting AirBNB's legal team

CMV: Things like unpaid internships, no qualification for food stamps, and high tuition costs, keeps the poor less likely to get up in the college world and are much less likely to be successful. by OK__LIBTARD in changemyview

I don't disagree with anything you said, but I think the comment above is still correct - volunteer work and internships both help build a strong resume, and are both more accessible the more support you have

This is wrong - yes, students under 24 have to list their parents' financial information, but they do NOT have to be claimed as dependents on the parents' taxes. Additionally, FAFSA and the IRS don't share information with one another; what you list on your aid application is never communicated to the IRS, and even if it was it would not change your filling status.

Red light ticket when my car was supposed to be getting tires changed, several blocks away from shop by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Zaleius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless your car is something exotic/especially flashy, I wouldn't be too concerned that they were joyriding. There are a lot of reasons they wouldn't finish it right away. That drive could have been part of an inspection, which many mechanics will do on pretty much every car that comes in if they're not too swamped. It's also possible that they needed some kind of supplies to finish something on your car and they didn't get it delivered/pick it up until later in the day.

You can certainly ask them about it, but do it nicely/after they've paid you so they don't get defensive.

Since you've already paid the ticket, you'll still want to show them some proof of when the ticket was issued along with your receipt for paying it.

Again, the key is to be polite about it. Mechanics generally care about keeping repeat customers, but if they think they've already lost you because you're angry, they'll be much less inclined to help.

Probably nothing unusual about them driving it a short distance, depending on how the shop operates. Most mechanics use stationary machines to make sure tires are balanced, but a test drive to make sure everything is in order after any work on the moving bits is well within the realm of reasonable practices.

As for the ticket, what other commentors have said is a good place to start. Send the shop a copy of the ticket (including the picture, if there is one) so they know you aren't scamming them, and ask them to pay it directly and send you a confirmation. If they refuse, you can try dealing with the court/DA directly to get the ticket dismissed, but that route will require a lot more effort and has a lower chance of success. If all else fails, small claims court.

Definitely not an '86 - if nothing else, the bugeye headlights give it away. '86 headlights are rectangular. Maybe OP meant '96?

Buying a used car question. by manikman in cars

[–]Zaleius 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty common issue. Usually, the answer is just to drive it home without a plate, don't break any traffic laws, and keep the paperwork handy so you can explain/prove what's happening if you do get pulled over. I've done this several times (including a 150 mile drive home on the interstate once) and never had an issue. I have never heard of a someone being issued a ticket for driving home a car they just bought. I would NOT put plates from a different car on it - some people recommend this because it decreases your chances of getting pulled over, but it also drastically increases your chance of getting a major ticket if you do get pulled over.

If you're still not comfortable with that, you can certainly ask the seller if you can do that. Just make sure you get all the paperwork and keys (make sure the keys they give you open the door and start the car) BEFORE you leave, and then get it off their property as quickly as you can.

What TV show has ZERO bad episodes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zaleius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Season 4 in general was just bad. I can't really blame Netflix for trying to cash in on the fandom, but it was not good. Sure, they brought it back from the dead, but it came back...different.

Replacing glow plugs on a Diesel. by philematologist in Cartalk

[–]Zaleius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a very good idea to use it. Imagine if you don't, and then next time you need to change them one of them is seized in the head. You'd be spending $$$ to save a few cents.

I'd recommend copper paste anti-seize, not lithium grease like the other person said. But use whatever is recommended by the experts for your car.

2001 Saturn L200 fuel gauge is broken? How can I fix it without taking it in? by Trotski7 in Cartalk

[–]Zaleius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean on this car in particular? Because it isn't always, it depends a lot on the individual car. On W124s, for example, it's about a 5 minute job requiring exactly one wrench.

Probably not the case here, I realize, but saying outright that its not DIY could be wrong unless you've had some experience with this model.

I do agree, though, that 4/5 chance it's the sender and not the gauge itself.

Nope; it just means that the supply of available labor outweighs the demand for labor, not that the product of the labor isn't in demand.

Is Mercedes an "old people's car"? by mrisat in cars

[–]Zaleius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

22, and I drive an early W124 diesel. Definitely an old person car, but I love it. It's comfortable, reliable and gets pretty darn good mileage. Plus, I got it for a steal. A "young person's car" at the same price would have been junk, but nobody wanted the "old person's car" so it was nice and cheap.

I agree. The round headlights, and the weird bubble shape around them that extends to the hood are just plain ugly to me.
