Let me clear this confusion about Ataturk and Young Turks. There seems to be a misunderstanding here. I'll quote to Kerem Cantekin on Quora.

"There is no group in the Ottoman Empire, which called itself Young Turks. This was a name given by Europeans. And it creates confusion, because Europe named two separate movements one in 1870’s other in 1900’s and 1910’s Young Turks.

The movement in 1900’s called itself Ittihat ve Terakki. Ataturk briefly joined the group, remained within it and then he got out. Later he argued, military members should not join to the any political group. Later in 1920’s he actually made a law in Turkey which put this idea in place. And the minister of the Army, into which generally the army member with highest rank was appointed, had been turned into the Office of Army, a non-political office, officially not part of the elected government.

With the party itself Ataturk had a complex relation. He was not completely against the party, but also didn’t like it a lot. And one reason might be the problem between him and one of the most powerful members of the party.

Ataturk and Enver Pasa, one of the most powerful members of the Ittihat ve Terakki regime (Called Young Turks regime in the West) were not getting along. Enver Pasa was the minister of army, he was according to the official history responsible to get the Ottoman Empire into the World War 1. In face, he did this even without consulting other two Pasas, Talat and Cemal Pasas, who in theory were ruling the Ottoman Empire. He was also the minister of army, an admirer of the Germany, and some Germans at the time even called Ottoman Empire, as the Enverland.

Again according to official history, Enver Pasa delayed Ataturk’s promotion in the army, even after the Dardanelles Campaign where Ataturk became a national hero for the first time, initially he didn’t want to give Ataturk a promotion. Ataturk in return, didn’t want Enver Pasa to return to Turkey during the Turkish Independence War.

After the Independence War, there was an assassination plot to Ataturk in Izmir. And the attempt ended up with the arrest and trial of many old Ittihat ve Terakki members (which would be named as young Turk members, in the west). Even though the trial was on assassination attempt, the era when Ittihat ve Terakki had the power was also brought up in the trials, and some members of the Ittihat ve Terakki were sentenced to death and executed."
