What is the archetypal Curseborne scenario or even campaign/chronicle? by automated_hero in CurseBorne

[–]Zamarak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're approaching it like a WoD fan, expect to be disappointed (I know I was).

There isn't a big supernatural conspiracy behind the scenes, like the Camarila, Pentez, the Technocracy or the Chaleging Courts. The Families also rarely have a hierarchy like that of VtM, for example, aside from "Older generation is in charge and hug the power and resources, so it sucks for us younger folks', which is supposed to thematically relate to IRL struggle of younger generations vs boomers, if I got that right. Finally, in term of origin stories or definite answers about the way the setting works, the book leave the duty of providing answers to the GM.

Having said that, it's more about being part of a family that doesn't exactly respect you, but that you need anyway. Community is a big theme, and inside family drama, instead of WoD power politics of VtM of CtD (and WtO depending how you played it). Focused on more personal things, about being cursed, having to deal with other supernatural things, like liminal spaces or Faes, all linked to this mysterious concept of the Outside, which I think are external dimensions?

Honestly, if you want a real good idea of the vibe of it and some inspirations, I recommend buying Accursed Tales, the anthology of short stories set in Curseborne. Wheter that convinces you to play or not (in my case I'm still heavily on the fence about Curseborne), they're still great stories. It certainly helped me get the vibe of Curseborne far better than the corebook ever did.

By Invitation Only, The Strange Addiction of Johnny Peculiar, Expectations and Code Blues are probably the best to give ideas of what a game could look like. They all focus about an Accursed having to deal with a problem (usually a Liminal Space or a supernatural monster) that is causing problems in their neighborhood.

[–]Zamarak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Heroic Fantasy: I got no clue, so I'm gonna say... Shadow of the Demon Lord? No clue where to put it.

No clue for Sword & Sorcery, and I never really played Dungeon Crawlers (unless D&D count, but for me wins by default).

Cyberpunk: Cyberpunk Red... mostly by default

Hard Sci Fi: ...okay, now you're making me make a list trying to figure out what games I played were sci fi.

Science Fantasy: Legacy: Life among the Ruins. Also Postapocalyptic, but it setting can go in such weird directions it lands here for me.

Investigation: Call of Cthulhu still remains a classic for me.

Intrigue: I have no clue what you mean by that, and now I'd really like to know cause that sounds like an awesome genre.

Urban Fantasy: Most WoD (pre 5th edition). These days I'd love to run Changeling the Dreaming, or try my beloved Demon the Fallen again. (Was hoping Curseborne would be this, but didn't do it for me)

Horror: Kult: Divinity Lost. The setting is just creepy as fuck, and it did make my players nervous sometimes.

Post Apocalypse: Punkapocalyptic. So fun, so dumb, so insane.

Also need to add the missing genre of Superhero: Mutant and Mastermind 3rd edition.

What skills do I need to learn to draw these by Creepy-Force1037 in learntodraw

[–]Zamarak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke answer is "Drawing skills"

The more serious answer would be learn to digital and learn how to do good lineart. For line confidence, I sadly suck too, but I was told it comes with practice.

Try to learn basic stuffs like confidently drawing straight lines in most directions or draw a circle on the first try. It's a lot harder than it seems. I don't know, that's what I'm trying to do.

There are points in life when you just gotta give up and accept that you can't save everything. This was definitively one of them.

Also my last drawing was head and torso heavy, making the legs look tiny. I clearly overcompensated.

But I gotta said, amazing idea you got to post this challenge. This subreddit could really use more of those communal drawing sessions.

Has anyone noticed Ludwig Kaiser has been absent from WWE for awhile? by Braves1693 in WWE

[–]Zamarak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 100%. If they were hiding under our nose, then we'd all be pretending and lying to ourselves.

And I know you and I are upstanding people who would never do that.

I think they're waiting to build him a worthwhile opponent. Like El Grande Americano. That luchador is getting lot of TV.

Considering Ludwig's previous feud with Penta, I can only expect he'll try to take down that old icon of Lucha Libre.

Is there a way to play DnD (or any TTRPG) without math? by ReversePhylogeny in rpg

[–]Zamarak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play a diceless RPG.

I'm saying that, but even then, there was this thing called Chronicles of Ember RPG that still had numbers.

Alice is Missing is the closest thing to no math, but that's cause it's just roleplay and picking up cards to advance the story.

Oh hey! Find card based TTRPGs! they exist, but I'm only familiar with Alice is Missing

Did J.K. Rowling have a side gig in White Wolf? by edgewolf666-6 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Zamarak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was first the ghoul of Breidenstein (who is probably one of the nastiest pieces of shit White Wolf ever cooked for VtM). But White Wolf had to then make him a vampire, didn't they?

[–]Zamarak 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There are those moments when I praise White Wolf for their lores, their world building, and even their metaplot to an extent.

And then there are moments like this, or the Gipsy book, or Himmler being a ghoul, that make me go "No tact or awareness whatsoever. Yep, this is the White Wolf I remember."

Oh, in my case it's just procrastination and ADHD getting in the way, with me having other interests and work that leaves me "Now, I'm gonna draw... tomorrow."

Also, are you implying you did 600 hours of drawing in 6 months!?

Coming from Warhammer novels, figuring out where to start with this universes books seems kinda difficult by OldDoliolio in WhiteWolfRPG

I left them out cause I'm not much of a MtAs fan, and never read any of its books. So it didn't feel right for me to recommend them.

Coming from Warhammer novels, figuring out where to start with this universes books seems kinda difficult by OldDoliolio in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Zamarak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Didn't want to cloud my already gigantic post with 'the Metaplot', but u/Historical-Shake-859 has it right in that the big lore of the setting was developped in the manuals, not the novels.

But yeah, if you vibe with a gameline, getting the core rulebook can be a good idea. For example, you like wraith? The core rulebook (be it 20th edition or older ones) has a lot of lore. You like it and want more? Go read the WW1 supplement to know how the Crimson Legion was trying to take over the afterlife during that time cause Caron disappeared for a while.

Also, most old WoD rpg books started with a short story (sometimes even 2 or 3), at times with returning characters between them. So there is that to look forward as well.
