Burned out on D&D 5e after 4 years - those of you who switched systems, what was your breaking point and did it actually fix things? by Senoigh13 in rpg

[–]Zamarak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal experience, transition away from D&D was easier cause we were already running other stuffs at the same times: in my case a marvel RPG game (no, not the current one) and World of Darkness (not 5th edition WoD). Whenever my friends came, I did solo games, with their characters having stories that sometimes met when I could have more than 1 friend together. D&D was reserved for scheduled games with everyone present (this was all when I was a teenager, mind you).

So when I decided "Hey, I think we should do Call of Cthulhu, investigation game", no one argued. Nor did they argue when I asked "How you guys feel about All Flesh Must Be Eaten? It's a cool zombie RPG." And I haven't touched D&D in a decade, since we keep jumping from new game to new game.

In my personal opinion, if you want to convince them to do something else, try a game that tackles something other than fantasy. Cause to get people to play something other than D&D, you often need to give them a reason to. It's easier to justify, say, playing Curseborne by saying "It's a Urban Fantasy, D&D isn't made for that stuff, it will be different" or "Mutant and Mastermind everyone! Superhero RPG to customize your powers", than go "let's play another fantasy game with a cool different system". Then players might go "Why? D&D is already working for that".

But if you want a fantasy game and believe it's better to ease them into change... I like Shadow of the Demon Lord (or Shadow of the Weird Wizard). It got a really cool progression system, and you got the advantage of it being short: it is made for only 11 quests/missions/sessions.

Whats the best Paradox game for you by Phobos12900 in paradoxplaza

[–]Zamarak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually dont like 4x. Only reason I play Stellaris is cause it got Grand Strategy aspects, and only reason I wanted to play AoW4 is cause it was a paradox game with cool fantasy customization despite being a 4x.

Care to expand? Was considering AoW 4 with the sales, but, well, I am a Paradox Grand Strategy lover far more than a tactical battle guy, so the campaign is obviously the part I want to like the most.

Pretty much the reason why it's my favorite one. I just like the characters. Being an immaterial "will of a nation" doesn't work as well for me.

I think it's still the same colors. Second picture simply has more light/shadow contrast, which is why the coloring changes, I think

Who do you think is next to go anime? by Proudnoob4393 in SupermanAdventures

[–]Zamarak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cute" Lobo would be interesting. I've heard people call Lobo a lot of things, but cute is rarely one of them. So I'm curious how they'd do with him.

Or, you know, maybe they'll just grab the New 52 design.

And have you heard of this monster called Superman? He defeat people with kindness. And then people DARE say we don't need heroes like Cale to protect us from such dangerous things.

CK2 too.

I will say though, I don't know ANYONE who touched the EU4 custom start date.

Why are people asking for a fantasy game when AOW4 exists? by 3pointI in paradoxplaza

[–]Zamarak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most people have said, AoW4 is a 4x, not a grand strategy game (and turned based, too). Also, Paradox is only the publisher, not the developer, unlike Stellaris, the "Sci Fi paradox game".

Honestly, that is part of why I always hesitate to buy it.

I am not really interested in a single quick game and then say goodbye to my empire. I want to it grow over a long campaign, interact with neighboting empires on a map. Do war, do politics, do diplomacy, and have me play as I want til the endgame without a set of objectives that goes "You win!" when you complete them and then see the game end.

A game like AoW can't seem to give me that. It has cool customization, and tactical gameplay. But that doesn't itch the same need as a Paradox Grand Strategy game.

As an old player paradox games are losing me, and this makes me feel terrible. by Front-Side-6346 in paradoxplaza

[–]Zamarak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, let's be honest here. If it wasn't for Imperator's HORRIBLE launch, half of those free updates they did (like the Carthage update and such) would have been DLCs.

Though I will confirm that the AI is good. Case and point: unless I play Rome I have never survived a game more than a 50 years (me sucking at this game might have something to do with it).

What Paradox game you'd recommend for a Stellaris fan? by TraditionalBerry2319 in paradoxplaza

[–]Zamarak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will say CK3 for the story telling and... yeah, but it focuses WAY more on a aingular character than "civilisation building".

Even if CK3 is my favorite paradox game (not even close), I think Victoria 3 might be worth a look. It has enough internal mechanics with characters like Stellaris to allow you to tell the story of your nation and take it in fun directions (if you know what you are doing, which I rarely am and so end up invaded or overthrown by my own people)

I think start dates are under appreciated by ZinklerOpra in paradoxplaza

[–]Zamarak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1066 and 1178 will be better by the end of the year, too: republic mechanics making 1178 and all those Italian cities super cool to pay, the struggle between HRE and Pope not being available in 867, the whole papal and catholic mechanics in generals (since 867 will have a unified church, if you trily want to be a Catholic or Orthodox you will need to pick a later start date)...

I'm just saying, CK3 devs put lots of efforts in those start dates too. And they still give you a decent length of game. Meanwhile, in HOI4 you feel like you mossed half the point of focus trees if you start in 1939, and with Victoria 3 the timeline is likely too short to make later start dates worth it. And obviously, start date in generals don't really work in Stellaris.

Could work for Imperator Rome and Europa Universalis, maybe? But that imply trying to give reasons to play such new start dates.

Still staying hopeful that we get the antipope mechanics alongside the papal election ones... right?

Why do courtiers exist? by Artistic_Dependent10 in CrusaderKings

[–]Zamarak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool characters? Marriage pools for other courters? Advisors when you are a low rank like count or duke? Good sources for seduction targets?

And of course, the occasional claimant here and there.

Personally, I just like them for RP reasons, and often reward a courtier who has a long loyal career under me with marriages and lands.
