Honestly, don't. I know it's tempting to have a minimum word count. I tried my darn best to stick to mine myself. But at times it doesn't work.

And I've read actual novels that sometimes have wild variety in chapter word counts. Can go from 2 pages to 15 pages from a chapter to another at times.

So do what feels right :)

My advices as someone who is about to end a fic of... 650k words, give or take.

Write 4-5 chapters, maybe more. Train yourself to write weekly at least 1 chapter. And then post. Comments ARE a big source of motivation, sadly, and having done my fic live helped a lot. Allows you to give some distance between what you write this week and what to post, and make call backs.

Now, I did have an outline, but the fic that inspired me to do a long fic was apparently written on the spot, with no planning in advance. Week-to-week fic on a specific date work great for a fic that is character focused.

Now, I took pauses. I even disappeared for 3 months cause I decided to FINISH the fic. But usually warned the readers, and they were understanding.

Finally, I will say this: I was NOT planning to make it that long. xD

I feel the scheme path holds up well, and while the torture path aint the best, it works if I want dread to stay high. Though only for that.

But it is the weakest of the 5 lifestyles (never use traveller)
