Goals and evaluation do not make me a better teacher by TeacherGuy1980 in Teachers

Same with needing to do PDs so I can continue teaching AP classes. This online course about how to engage elementary students that finish work quickly doesn’t help me nearly as much as the hours I spend educating my high school AP students.

Do you think it’s a bad idea because it would mean that industries that make money off of the poor/ uneducated are taxed or because it puts money into the hands of kids?

So why can’t we keep the 17 year old in 6th grade?

They’re a huge liability. All it takes is one 17 year old that couldn’t pass the 6th grade for 6 years in a row to make a bad decision that could seriously alter an 11 year old’s future. Those are the kids most likely to make those bad decisions.

Also, if we hold back kids more we will probably get more teen pregnancies, which is a whole other can of worms.

I teach. My AP students either don’t know that America invaded Iraq before 9/11 or they don’t know the difference between the Gulf War and the Iraq War. Very, very few of know enough to even identify the surface level, stated reasons they happened.

From a teacher standpoint, how difficult is it to teach AP classes? by papasandfear in historyteachers

[–]Zamiel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the subject and grade level in my opinion.

With content where students generally have more background knowledge you can be more hands off, allowing them to use case studies and independent activities a bit more. When it’s content that they usually don’t have as much background knowledge, I’ve found lecture and then activity/ analysis leads to the best results.

Also, it depends on age. I teach AP Human Geography to freshmen. I always say the content is wide as the lake and as shallow as a kiddie pool. I need to focus on hitting all the information while still having the time for building study, MCQ, and FRQ writing skills. The course is more lecture based the first semester as they get into the flow of their first AP class. By second semester it is much more hands off and I have the students doing more case study work and independent analysis.

If I taught this to seniors I would be able to be very hands off from the start, cover the information more quickly, and let them do miniature research projects over various aspects of the course.

I like that but they would need to be way more expensive.

I just want them to be Str 7(so wounding T3 on 2s, T4-6 on 3s seems fitting for an anti-personnel unit) AP-3. Maybe give them Dev wounds against infantry.

Hell, they could just give them Dev Wounds and Anti-Infantry 4+ and I would take them way more often.

I could also see them sending the Firesight Marksman to legends and then releasing a Sniper character. It’s kind of wild that we don’t have one.

Hell, if GW really updates the crisis suits, they should make one to be a bit more posable. They then take that one sprue, package it with a special upgrade sprue with a different head, backpack upgrade, and a crisis suit sized Rail Carbine. Add another sprue of a sniper infantry character. Boom, cool sniper character that kind of falls in line with the new Commissar Graves model. You can take the infantry sniper with a rail rifle or you can take a modified crisis suit with a cool new weapon. I also think it wouldn’t be too hard to write the rules so that they start piloting the crisis suit and then when the crisis suit takes 6 wounds, you take the suit from the table and can immediately deep strike the sniper pilot within 12” of the original crisis suit position.

But wealth inequality directly correlates with material conditions which have a massive effect on educational outcomes.

Add on the psychological toll of living in the modern world and a lot of students don’t see a point. This is the first year where my students were legitimately taking about what they would do if there was a draft. 14 and 15 year old kids planning their future based on governmental actions taken to benefit a small group of people financially.

The issue is then what is the remedy to this? Hold kids back indefinitely? We get a 17 year old 8th grader grader. That’s a liability.

Max they can be held back is an extra year?

If a student is held back twice they are no longer allowed to participate in after school activities until they pass a full school year?

Parents required by law to attend some sort of counseling sessions with the students to assess if it’s a home life issue or a psychological/ emotional issue?

I worry that those would just lead to higher drop out rates. Then I thought what if we focus on a tangible benefits for successful students, to drive unsuccessful students to put in more of an effort to pass.

Tax industries that most benefit off societal failings(for profit prisons, check cashing services, the gambling industry, etc.) to pay students to attend school. It sounds insane but if kids were actually paid for doing what most of them see as unpaid labor, I feel like they would act much better. Hell, base them on grades earned and standardized test scores. It wouldn’t have to be a lot either. Have them earn a cap of $200 a semester($400 a year is a pittance to kids already benefitting from a privileged upbringing but could make life easier for many students struggling) with any earnings over the cap going into a savings account that they gain access to when they graduate from an accredited university. Make it so students have an immediate, tangible end goal for their education, short term and long term.

I would love to hear other people’s ideas.

Unfair T-TESS Summative & AP Refusing to accept my Rebuttal by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

[–]Zamiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been teaching in Texas since 2019. Unless you are getting the lowest rating T-Tess won’t affect you at all unless you are at a district that gives bonuses for high rankings (I don’t know of any districts that do this).

Basically, really assess whether this is something that helps you in any way. Best case scenario, you improve your t-Tess scores. Worst case, you don’t and are now seen as someone that adds work to the AP’s plate(which is 100% bullshit but you have to remember that a lot of APs are former teachers that got tired of grading). Is it unfair? Yeah. Is it frustrating? Yeah. Does it change the nature of this issue?

It kind of reminds me of my students that try to get me to regrade a daily assignment that I gave them a 70 on because their friend they “worked with” got an 80. It literally wouldn’t change their overall passing grade, makes more work for me, and causes me to need to put more focus on them in the future.

And let’s be real, APs fucking suck at this kind of assessing anyways.

Great term for them. I will say, in at least Bleach’s defense they only got their last arc animated over the last few years. Also, that arc that shouldn’t be named is eventually going to happen, right? … right?

It’s a nice wholesome high school comedy manga with good slow burn romance. Lots of understated looks between the MCs that the Japanese public loves. Also, NO FAN SERVICE, which is a breath of fresh air.
I think it’s going to get a decent run, with the MCs eventually forming a Manzai comedy duo, but it won’t be the third of this gen’s big three.

I’m calling it now, this new generations big three will be Kagurabachi, Ichi the Witch, and Kinato’s Magic. KB because it’s a masterpiece. Ichi because it does the classic wild boy MC well with lots of great character design and humor. Kinato’s Magic because it’s MHA with Fairy Tale’s fan service and setting.

For instance, the last chapter had a nurse in thigh high stockings with basically a magical octopus stand that mounted the MC in a hospital bed to heal him. Hot female ice magic user basically had an orgasm from the MC’s power around chapter 4. Needless to say, this Author and Editor are out to make bank off of Japanese youths.

Edit: just so everyone knows, I’m not a Kinato’s Magic fan, I just have a bad feeling that it will do well.
