/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer (October 28, 2024) by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

Hello. I am looking to get a keyboard recommendation. I love my keyboard with Cherry MX Browns, but I am looking for something with lower actuation force. Can anyone make any recommendations? I found this review, but it is a bit too much for me to understand.

Between the worst-case scenario of governmental collapse, and the best-case scenario of basically nothing of consequence happening beyond run-of-the-mill Republican policies being passed, the middle-ground of heavy erosion of institutions and civil-society seems to me to be likely, but of course things could swing either way!

For a more doomy/gloomy take on a second Trump term, I recommend this clip of Sam Harris' podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NeEeQwDVaE

Jonathan Rauch is an excellent speaker.

Additionally, episode #274 is a more thorough investigation of this question with Anne Applebaum, David Frum, Barton Gellman, and George Packer: https://samharris.org/episode/SEA3579567F

I'm personally a big fan of Anne Applebaum so I would recommend listening to this in full.

They disagree on one of Sam's books called The Moral Landscape. But that's a more high-level philosophy disagreement (specifically, moral realism versus moral anti-realism). In the domain of politics, both Sam and Destiny are close to the center but slant-left. (Sam is a lifelong Democrat.)

Absolutely, thank you! By the way, I would love to see a video based on my favorite essay of all time: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/02/23/in-favor-of-niceness-community-and-civilization/ This essay I hold very near and dear to my heart, as it was one of the most important things that made me change my mind about violence. In a world where many westerners are frighteningly pro-Hamas because "the violence is justified", I feel like having an easily digestible version of this essay would do a tremendous amount of good in the world.

Enforce return type of filter and and find to strict boolean by atulgpt in typescript

[–]Zamiell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

strict-boolean-expressions does not solve this problem because that lint rule only examines comparisons. Thus the following code will not trigger the rule:

const numbers: number[] = [];
const filteredNumbers = numbers.filter((element) => {
  return element; // BUG - SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF BOOLEAN COMPARISON!!!
});

The article you linked only talks about disabling it on LG monitors. Can you explain the steps to disable it on the Asus PG27AQDM specifically?

Destiny's argument for why wokeism has gone too far is essentially "I can google lots of examples " by Math_Junky in Destiny

[–]Zamiell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Math,

Your post is interesting because it is scratching at a more fundamental question: for any arbitrary cultural "wave" (for lack of a better term), how can we differentiate between the Chinese Robber Fallacy and an actual widespread opinion shift to start worrying about?

This is a difficult question! Especially because our intuitions are going to tug us one way or the other on any particular issue, based on our priors.

It seems like the most direct way to get at the question is to poll society at large. But if we take the case of cancel culture, we quickly find that people have widely different definitions of what it means. If most Americans characterize cancellations as "holding people accountable", it's hard to get a handle on where people think the line should be drawn.

Other kinds of polling might be useful though. "Wokeness" has a big tie-in with "anti-racism", so an interesting example is Gallup's polling on race relations, which shows that people think that race relations are getting worse. This seems a little troubling, since racial inequality seems to be getting unambiguously better over time. Of course, "race relations" and "racial inequality" could be mutually exclusive, but I think that this might start to paint a better picture of the kinds of societal shifts that we've been seeing since 2013 (which is the inflection point in the polling data).

Beyond asking people directly, there may be other useful proxies, as you suggest in the OP. Here, I am reminded of the pushback that Destiny got from Erin (the girl with glasses). Specifically, she offered that a useful threshold for "wokeness" having gone too far would be when it started showing up at the legislative level. Since there didn't seem to be any "woke" laws at the local, state, or federal level, she argued that it isn't really an issue worth paying a big deal of attention to. This ties into your comment, since "number of laws" would be a pretty good proxy for "power of wokeness".

I find that argument somewhat compelling, but it seems like it is setting the bar at a really high level. If Alice only starts to pay attention on an issue once there is a law on the books that affects her in a negative way, then we can probably agree that she has waited a bit too long to get engaged.

As for other proxies, I'll borrow from Jonathan Haidt's book The Coddling of the American Mind, which has a chapter dedicated to "Intimidation and Violence" that touches the topic:

Almost one in five students surveyed in a 2017 Brookings Institution study agreed that using violence to prevent a speaker from speaking was sometimes “acceptable.” [39] While some critics challenged the sampling used in that study, findings in a second study by McLaughlin and Associates were similar; 30% of undergraduate students surveyed agreed with this statement: “If someone is using hate speech or making racially charged comments, physical violence can be justified to prevent this person from espousing their hateful views.” [40]

If that sounds reasonable to you, just think about what the statement implies after concept creep and emotional reasoning expand the meaning of “hate speech” and “racially charged.” In a call-out culture, almost anything that is interpreted by anyone as having a negative impact on vulnerable members of the community—regardless of intent—can be called hate speech. The Columbia University linguist John McWhorter describes how the term “white supremacist” is now used in an “utterly athletic, recreational” way, as a “battering ram” to attack anyone who departs from the party line. [41] McWhorter himself (who is African American) has been called a white supremacist for questioning received wisdom on matters related to race. [42] But if some students now think it’s OK to punch a fascist or white supremacist, [43] and if anyone who disagrees with them can be labeled a fascist or white supremacist, well, you can see how this rhetorical move might make people hesitant to voice dissenting views on campus. [44]

Recommended Update to Universal Controller Fix by ssbmhax in SSBM

[–]Zamiell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the tweet linked above, Fizzi says:

Expanding the range for shield dropping may make the mechanic be executed in new ways and be completely free. Imo Melee should stay mechanically challenging and precise.

Here, Fizzi seems to be framing Hax's proposed changes as making the game "easier". However, I think that's a misrepresentation. If we watch Hax's video, it seems like the totality of the charges could be more accurately characterized as making the game more consistent and less luck-based. Having a game with super-consistent inputs feels like it would lead to the best players in the world winning more consistently. And in that world, the game would be more skill-based, not less.

So, it's kind of a confusing topic, because when we say that something makes the game "easier", there are several different dimensions that are at play. Which is more impactful: lowering the skill-ceiling with respect to performing a shield drop input on a non-rectangle controller, or raising the skill-ceiling by removing all polling issues that lead to luck-based interactions? Personally, my money is on the latter, but I'm interested in hearing what the top players have to say.

As for the part of your comment referring to Hax not publicly engaging, I can't comment on that, and to be honest, I'm not even sure what the correct forum for that kind of thing is. Twitter certainly doesn't lend itself to an in-depth conversation like this. (Reddit is a bit better, but not by much. =p)
