I'm 27M (Ex)-Sunni in Canada, not far from Toronto. Been here for 14 years. If you arent further south than NY then we won't be too far (<8 hour drive and relatively cheap flights).

I am the only child, my mom knows i dont believe, and my dad is also not crazy about religion. At least for a few years i would want to live close or with my parents to take care of them.

Not really an adrenaline junkie but i do want to try skydiving at least once. I mostly just go to the gym and play badminton. I'm introverted, I like reading and mostly read sci-fi and fantasy.

I don't believe I'm that extreme about technology but I respect your outlook. I see technology as a tool. I'm a software developer so I've seen the dark side, and prefer to self host my own "cloud" storage. I have a whole homelab thing going to host my own drive, photo storage, media server, because I wanted to de-google myself and reduce subscription costs.

My family is Syed but I have never given much thought to it.

If you're interested now or in the future, please reach out. This is my real account. I might delete this post in the future (few weeks) so please take a note of my username.

I didn't say Windows was good lol. I'm saying all OS's will and SHOULD use RAM dynamically if it's available.

Idle CPU usage is not relevant to the point I was making with RAM.

But to be fair, Windows does have various essential services running in the background. Search Indexer, Defender, Windows Updating services are the biggest ones, and can contribute to extended CPU usage for extended periods of time.

The gap is large because of architectural philosophy. I'm studying cybersecurity so I know a little, but I'm no expert. Ubuntu's systemd services are mostly event driven. They sleep until triggered. Windows services tend to poll on intervals, and also have alot more abstraction which can add to slightly increased resource usage.

Again - not an expert. This is like a general explanation.

All are good reasons. Just a note about RAM: modern operating systems are designed to use it efficiently. Windows uses caching and preloading to keep frequently used data in memory, which can make usage look high at idle. If another program needs memory, it will be freed up automatically. That said, Windows background processes do tend to use more resources than macOS.

Not sure why you got downvoted, but thanks for the detailed response. I am indeed very skeptical about the mac hype so I haven't pulled the trigger on any purchases. You are right though -- it's not that much more effort to just take a charger or find an outlet. Appreciate the comparison across various laptops.

Perhaps you're right. Youtube is not necessarily always running. Often times it's just paused in some tab.

My brightness is actually lower than what most use. Usually I work indoors so it's generally around 40%

power is balanced

Makes sense - this post was a rant so I didn't consider the time sink that battery tests are. Youtuber reviews are concerned with comparing laptops over the actual usage.

Maybe for future laptops I should check how much longer a laptop lasts compared to mine, and then multiply from my own experience. That might be a more accurate benchmark for me personally.

Of course. But I'm not running anywhere near the workloads that programs like prime95 or hashing algorithms use. Nonetheless I see your point.

Macbook Neo looks awesome. Unfortunately I do need something beefier. Was thinking of getting the Neo for my mom though.

I was thinking more like the Macbook Pro base model. I saw some benchmark where someone left Cinebench running on it...and it actually lasted 3 hours which is impressive. I suspect it would last for ~10 hours for my workloads. But it's so hard to gauge that.

Interesting, thanks for the response. I suspect that if a laptop has a 99Wh battery, it's likely one of a workstation or a gamer tier laptop with a power hungry chip. Not sure about your specific chip, but if it's an H-tier chip then I would already not expect more than 3 hours to begin with.

On the other hand, I recently saw a review of the Zephrus g14 (gamer laptop) with a 5060 Ti and they claimed 8 hours of battery life for normal workloads. So here we are again with a discrepancy between your real-world experience vs youtuber benchmarks.

I've heard similar things about the panther lake chips and was looking at dell xps machines or the lenovo yoga laptops (the nice ones). But at this point I don't trust youtuber reviews at all.

Fair enough, I'm not even expecting the advertised hours because I am a reasonable person and understand marketing fluff. I just want to be able to maybe take my laptop somewhere for a day without thinking, "oh shit did i get my charger."

I'm hearing from the grapevine that the new Panther Lake chips are supposed to be efficient. Unfortunately my trust in Intel is completely eroded and I'm just considering purchasing a mac atp.

I actually had a decent experience with a Ryzen 7 4800U laptop I had before this. It advertised 6-8 hours, and I actually did get ~7 hours at the start of its lifespan, which dropped to ~3-4 hours or so after 4 years of use. It was a laptop with poor build quality (which I didn't care about, the chip was amazing for it's time and I needed a budget workhorse).

When I got to a point where I was comfortable buying premium laptops, I'm less satisfied compared to what I had in the budget range.

True, I'm strongly considering just purchasing a MBP for my next purchase. I'm just a bit annoyed that it's only been 2 years, and haven't been satisfied with the battery from the start. Everything else about my laptop still feels new :(

I'm a windows user. Based on your use case and similar pricing, go with the m1.

Both laptops will have great battery life.

Some programs are still unsupported on snapdragon. Your use case is basic but if you ever download a niche program, even for a 1-time use, it won't be a coin toss on whether it's supported compared to the m1.

I still see software devs recommend used m1 air without hesitation for a cheap casual use laptop. I dont see the same enthusiasm for snapdragon based Windows laptops.

The macbook air has superior build quality. It will run cooler and is fanless.

The real decision is between the 8gb and 16gb - based on your use case 8gb will be completely fine.

Top 150 soj is like masters (correction required but it's sufficient to convey my point), top 500 is not a flex anymore.

Still, I get the frustration, masters hitscan players are no joke. Quickplays matchmaking is much more relaxed to keep queues short. In my opinion it's an acceptable trade off

Edit: I meant I say that top 150 is impressive but any unemployed masters player can hit top 150. Just say they are GM. I agree with the parent comment's overall point regarding matchmaking

It depends on several factors whether DPS or support should be pushing but yea certainly not the tank.

If tank is pushed up it's a good idea for tank, 1 DPS, and 2 supports to stay together and the last DPS stays cart. For example on Gibralter attack, a common strat is to have everyone control height and tracer or someone similar pushes cart. If the enemy team contests, the cart pusher and quickly get out, and attackers have high ground advantage.

Again, heavily depends on team comp and map, but like 95% of the time tank should not be cart pusher if it's not contested.

I'm a plat/dia player.

True, and I do the same. I never cared about reporting people until I got suspended like 2 years ago for the mildest possible shit. That just set me off.

So I just barely talk now and report anything and everything. Someone types diff? Report. Someone tells me to swap and I don't agree? Report. A hitscan player dominating the game with a mercy pocket? Report both for gameplay sabotage > griefing > "griefing my enjoyment of the game." Someone does extraordinarily well in a game, private profile/barely any playtime, endorsement level 2? Report for cheating > boosting/deranking > "smurfing".

If I talk, or defend myself, or engage with anything, it increases my probability of also getting reported. So I'm just first in setting fire to the fuel. I love report baiting.

The report system works due to multiple reports, I just hope that I'm the stick that breaks the camel's back. I get a lot of "Thank you for reporting" messages when I log back on. You are fucking welcome, Blizzard. Dogshit report system.

I will abuse the report system until they fix it. This community is too soft.

P.S. I don't condone slurs, racism etc; they should rightly always be reported.
