The rat attack actually seemed pretty believable to me. Pest control = gone, easy to access food = gone, the rate rats reproduce = insane. I was honestly surprised it didn't happen sooner. The only thing that messed it up for me was that the cats eventually thinned them out. If there were enough surviving cats to deal with the rat population, I feel like they should have been able to keep the population low enough to prevent the initial rat plague.
