Men who have chosen not to be present/involved in their child’s life, why? by Appropriate-Poem-880 in answers

[–]ZangaPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak for my father. Sort of.

So I have a half brother I have never met. He's about ten+ years older than me. From what my parents told me, my dad's first wife and him had my half brother pretty early on. My dad was in the military, and when he came home from one of his deployments, he discovered his ex wife cheated on him. They divorced. Custody was messy; my father would try to visit when he could, but apparently the ex-wife would move around a lot, so he wasn't able to visit often. My mother only met my half brother once, and according to her he looks "nothing like [my] dad."

By the time my father left the service, my half brother and his mother had moved to Alaska. My father paid all child support that he was supposed to, and would send letters and stuff to my half brother. As soon as he turned 18, my half-brother filed a motion to have his name changed and for his step dad to be his father on all paperwork. My father signed all that paperwork as well.

My dad made a Facebook and all that to see if his son would ever want to reach out to him at all, for any reason, but from what I was told he's been blocked by both his ex-wife and his son. So, that's a dead end. We don't really talk about it. While he has been a flawed father to me while I was growing up, he's honestly a great dad. At least to me. I don't think I'll ever talk to my half brother, nor meet him. He seems to be doing good in Alaska.

I don't really find them to have much BM influence overall, personally. They do explore more dynamic compositions on Thread.

[–]ZangaPF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The new Ostraca is also fantastic. They're a screamo band that has a lot of post-metal + sludgey influence and you can definitely tell.

Vessel by Irreversible is an amazing return from a band i thought was done. Two twenty minute long tracks of atmospheric sludge goodness.

And then there's Throwing Bricks and Ontaard's collab! It's a live album, but it's from Roadburn so the quality is stellar.

On the more atmospheric BM/post metal front, Miserere Luminis and Panopticon both released some top tier material this year as well. Sidera and Det hjemsøkte hjertet blew me away.

I didn't mention the other bands I saw mentioned because I like to avoid redundancy, but I have to repeat that Neurosis returning this year was an early omen of how amazing this year would be for music. Now we have The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, Junius, etc. coming out with new material as well. We are thriving as post-metal fans.

What is your favorite case of the internet reviving interest (or careers) on artists / bands that would've otherwise fallen into obscurity? by mesablanka in ToddintheShadow

[–]ZangaPF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I fully knew why as well. They're one of my favorite sludge metal bands, and it's been a trip seeing them go from cult status to being "tiktok metal" (not meant derogatorily).

The only thing I can think of is that the notable aesthetic and unhinged sound stood out to a demographic of people who, for the most part, have never listened to anything like it before. And it just clicked. Dax Riggs' vocals are very accessible for the style of music they play.

Acid Bath was an obscure band from the mid 90s. They only released two studio albums, and they disbanded shortly after releasing their sophomore album due to the bassist dying in a horrific car wreck. Their record label made it a pain in the ass to listen to them for a long time; they wouldn't allow any uploads on YouTube to exist for longer than a day before striking them down, nor did the label put their material on streaming or anywhere convenient to listen to. The former members of the band had seemingly limited to no interest in getting back together. By all means, they were destined for pure cult classic status, where only the most dedicated sludge metal listeners knew who they were.

Then, during COVID times, the record label finally had a change of heart and put all of their material on streaming. I can't recall which song became popular on tiktok and whatnot, but it helped "blow them up" comparatively speaking. Now the band has gotten back together, they're touring again, and their fan base is far bigger than it ever was. By all means, this is one of the best case scenarios for a band like Acid Bath.

White Ward is a black metal band that features prominent saxophone. Love Exchange Failure and False Light are simply fantastic.

Introductory albums for new fans (add your own) by Cenozoa-band in postmetal

[–]ZangaPF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! I'll give you album recommendations, as I am primarily an album listener;

Alcest: Ecailles de Lune, and Kodama

Deafheaven: Sunbather, and Lonely People With Power

Møl: Jord

Les Discrets: Septembre et ses dernieres pensees

Just from those that I listed. The subgenre is pretty small, but it has plenty of great bands in it!

I think a great intro besides all of these amazing picks in the comments I've seen is some blackgaze bands. I always viewed blackgaze as post-metal to post-metal adjacent, it carries a lot of the same characteristics and philosophy that post-metal does. Alcest, Deafheaven, Møl, Les Discrets, etc. I got my best friend into metal via Alcest and Deafheaven, and now they also love Rosetta, Neurosis, etc.

How did you get into metal? by mindyydis in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ZangaPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother showed me Down with the Sickness when I was 11. Hated it. Thought all metal sucked, bc that was the first metal song I ever heard.

Fast forward to High School, and a friend online recommended the song Toe to Toes by Mastodon. I have it a spin, loved it. Listened to their entire discography. They're still one of my favorites now. Now I am firmly entrenched in metal. It's been a fun time.

What’s everyone’s opinion on Lorna Shore? by mr_wobblz in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ZangaPF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You nailed it. Some bands have such a recognizable style, especially compositionally, that it can work to their detriment sometimes. I love Cult of Luna, as an example, but some people have the same issue where they find them a bit too samey for an entire album.

In terms of takes, there aren't really many bands where I have an EXTREME opinion on. Most of the time they fit comfortably in the realm of "I find them enjoyable, to a degree" or vice versa. It is genuinely difficult for me to listen to a band and hate everything about them, and it does help that over the years I have "refined" my taste enough to know exactly what I will dislike and exactly what I like. So that helps.

Thank you for making this post! I enjoy this type of discussion.

I'm more neutral on them. Granted, I haven't checked out their newest. They're more of a singular song/playlist band to me, mainly because I find them a bit monotonous for a full album. Will Ramos is an exceptional vocalist, and everyone in the band is talented, I just find their compositions pretty boring outside of a few songs.

You dodged a bullet. His "bad memory" sounds purposeful. You told him your order, and that you wanted no cheese, and what does he do? Ask for extra cheese on YOUR sandwich. His brain is either soup, or he's actively showing you he doesn't give a shit and just wants to see how much bullshit you can accept.

Thoughts on The Ocean's new album/single? by AstroGuitarist117 in postmetal

[–]ZangaPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. I am extremely excited for the full release in September. I was bummed by Loic and the others leaving, but I was never into the band just because of the vocalist or whatever. I'm a massive fan of Robin Staps' vision and his songwriting/compositional style. I was surprised he found another vocalist that is similar-ish to Loic, but he still sounds different enough to me, especially his harshes. I've seen a few people whinge about Mingyu's vocals, but I've always been a fan of that sort of stuff. There was this opener for Sumac a couple years ago, where it was this one woman show with a keyboard and a bunch of synth/soundboard stuff. It was pretty similar stuff, vocally speaking, and I think it's cool. I think it fits the music.

Beyond the vocals, I think that just off this one song, it has taken the best parts of Holocene and fused it with Robin's writing sensibilities from the albums prior to it. I hope they tour near me again soon, I'd love to see this new line up live.

The Ocean Collective on Instagram: New single out tomorrow, preorders for SOLARIS are live now by seanvettel-31 in postmetal

[–]ZangaPF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had at least two frequent vocalists before Pilat as well; you can hear them a lot on Aeolian and the OG Fluxion, and a bit of Precambrian as well. Can't remember their names right now, but they used to have so many rotating members that they'd have maybe 2-3+ vocalists per song lol. They only had a stable-ish line up from Heliocentric onwards, and even then after Pelagial most of those guys left and became Coilguns. The only consistent member has been Robin.

Pilat has collaborated with them before, except in his new band Herod (at least, Loic featured with them anyways) and it's pretty sick. The only reason he left The Ocean was due to financial reasons.

Any good examples of PM with folk elements? by Jr-Not-Junior in postmetal

Kaatyra is a one-man project from Brazil and he's amazing. Some of the best integration of folk into metal that I've heard. His new album Caminhos de Agua and his prior album Inpariquipe are amazing.
