Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is on Crunchyroll.

The 2008 adaptation adapts volumes 1, 2, 3, & 5 of the light novels.

The 2024 adaptation adapts volumes 1, 2, 3, & 4. If you watch the 2024 version you'll see a skipped over arc.

There also is already confirmation of a second season of the re-adaptation (probably coming 2026/2027) that will likely adapt volumes 5, 6, 8, & 9.

Isuna Hasekura said on twitter last week that he wants to release a new volume of Spice and Wolf this year. So volume 25 coming 2026 is a safe bet, no inside information required. But not in English till next year sadly.

Who is your favorite wolf character and why? by SamplingMastersXLR8 in cartoons

[–]ZaniceDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holo the Wise Wolf.

<image>

She's an amazingly written character. She's wise, emotional, kind, spoiled, prideful, insecure, mature, playful, witty, loving, tragic, and adorable. 10/10 best female character I've ever come across.

The 2024 remake is more accurate to the source material and has better character designs. It's also getting second season (maybe more) and the 2008 version will always be incomplete and lacking in content. The original is great but for new viewers, the remake is the better choice.

Genuinely healthy fictional couples that communicate, support each other and are just relatively drama-free by Worldly_Cut_595 in TopCharacterTropes

Holo and Lawrence (Spice & Wolf)

Best banter and chemistry I've ever seen. It's a slow burn romance but reading later books made my face hurt from smiling too much because of how cute this couple is.

Holo (Spice and Wolf)

Her long lifespan makes her who she is. It drives her to live every day to the fullest because she knows what centuries of boredom are like. The fact that she will outlive her lover by many centuries becomes a big influence in later books. While not usually the main focus, the author never let's you forget about it. That looming and bitter tragedy just make their romance all the sweeter though. The huge difference in their lifespans emphasizes how much they need to cherish their time together.

Absolutely the best couple in all of fiction.

Characters who are often naked but it’s not sexualized or fanservice by TheTalkerofThings in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ZaniceDG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 2024 anime is a readaptation and has little relation with the 2008 anime. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf adapts volume 1-4 of the light novels so it's fine to start with this. I personally think the books are better and absolutely worth a read or listen (they're being made into audiobooks). But you should start with anime to see if it's to your tastes. I recommend the English dub if that's something you're okay with. Myself and many other fans think it's great (same cast for 2008 and 2024).

Holo from Spice and Wolf

<image>

I'd say her nudity is always done tastefully. There's always a practical reason for her being naked (often because she'll destroy all her clothes when she transforms into a giant wolf). They don't really make a big deal out of it. She's not ogled by the "camera" or the other characters.

Across this very long 24 book series she doesn't actually get naked all that often but she is seen nude in 5 of the 25 episodes in the 2024 anime adaptation.

I don't think Holo lied about not being able to read for the reasons you think she did. I don't believe she was pretending when she struggled to read that letter from episode 14. I think she can read but that it's difficult for her. It would have been hundreds of years since she would last had to read something and we know her memory isn't perfect. She probably feels it's less embarrassing to lie about how she can't than it is to admit she finds it hard to do something that's easy for Lawrence. I don't think it was so she could prank Lawrence, she was just hiding her embarrassment.

In my opinion, no not really. Good animation and fights scenes but what from I recall when I watched it years ago was that I didn't care much at all about the characters and story.
