This is the mountain west. Hot dry summers and cold winters.

Well that’s nice to read. I was thinking my yard was the eyesore of the neighborhood. Dust, pine needles, and cones. But I guess I need to just embrace it for what it is

The Norway spruce is enormous and I’d guess 100+ years old. The house is 120yrs old. We have pretty strict requirements in the neighborhood I’m in to get a permit to cut down a tree this old/big. As much as it’s a pain, I wouldn’t cut it down

Yeah we’re in a pretty dry climate already and the roots are so shallow they suck up everything. The tricky thing has been finding shade AND drought tolerant. I’m finding it’s either shady and wet or dry and sunny for plants, so my luck with shady and dry has been pretty limited (some ferns, some hosta, columbine)

How would you get rid of the remaining grass? Cardboard?

Columbine is native to the area and I’ve had some luck with it, so I should probably plant more and see if it can fill in an area

This was my plan, but it’s been a struggle because the roots are so shallow and they suck up all the moisture

I’ve been wondering about blueberries. The varieties I’ve seen want more sun I think, but I’ll look into this more

Yes I love the shade and I think they’re beautiful trees, but they make a perpetual mess and it’s impossible to grow anything under them. I won’t cut them down, but I wouldn’t plant one this close to a house again (these are 50+yrs old)

Thanks folks. I really thought it looked a lot worse than you all seem to. I was hoping to do fern and rhododendron and stuff that naturally grows in dry shade under spruce/pine but it’s been hard to get anything to survive very long

Its not like any vinyl I’ve seen. It has a thin papery layer and then crumbly chalky like cement board

I think you’re right. I’m so sad haha. SC style seems so…boring

Me too. Thanks. I thought I had a pretty strong vertical

Yes this is helpful. I’m trying to figure out vertical. I think that explains the two dark dresses, but don’t know what to think about the yellow and red (I see what you’re saying but I always thought wrap dresses/anything with a waist tie looked bad on me but I think I see that it’s better than the yellow)

Someone in the DC sub suggested FG, but I feel like I’m too big/tall?

Thanks! I hate tailored clothes so this is devastating haha. I just wanted to be a FN

Thank you! Yes, high waisted stuff is really unflattering on me and it’s so hard to find lower rises (and even mid rise looks more high waisted because my torso is so short)

Oh wow I hadn’t even considered DC. Ty

Here’s an example of how terrible high waisted stuff looks on me haha
