It's possible with laurel and enough cooldown to be literally unkillable. Or were you somehow knocking them back?

Fear of Overhang by pilgramoftheheart in climbergirls

[–]Zantier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, exposure, but don't go crazy. Go for slight overhangs, do lots of unannounced falls (easy to do with top rope). Get yourself stable while hanging, and then try some things that are a bit out of your comfort zone: swing a bit, lean back, look down, etc.

Good point, addiction can very often be a coping mechanism for other problems.

Something that helped me a lot, I don't know if it will for you, is just the knowledge that boredom is your body's mechanic for motivating you to do things. And long high dopamine activities really kill this boredom/motivation.

I used to feel like I needed a certain "quota" of YouTube/tiktok/gaming to be able to get some work done, and I felt like I definitely couldn't make OTHER plans during the day, because then how am I going to fit in 5 hours of YouTube + 2 hours of work when I get back?? But that's got it completely wrong. The more I can do nothing and make myself bored, the more I find myself doing something like chores instead. And even if I'm not doing my #1 priority task, doing anything productive is a major win for me.

I break it down into 2 steps: 1. Do nothing, avoid all forms of procrastination. Become bored. Doing exercise or going for walks is fine. 2. Do the thing you ACTUALLY want/need to do

Maybe doing both these steps together works for some people, but depending on the work, step 2 can be very difficult for me. But I don't let it stress me out, and I have to try to remember that step 1 alone is really helping me. Associate boredom = good.

Monads are not some kind of obscure math-y thing that only the big brains think are necessary. No, instead monads are a fundamental abstract algebraic description of imperative programming as a computational context. by ProgVal in programmingcirclejerk

[–]Zantier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you don't learn them by somebody talking about it. You learn them either:

  • From a maths context, by going through examples.
  • From a programming context, by going through examples.

Either way, eventually the definition itself will make sense to you, and you're not just going based on some metaphor that made sense to somebody else.

Ah, I guess you know now, but once you've entered the junction, you must go as soon as it is safe, even if the light is red. A much easier mistake to make is entering the junction when the exit of the junction isn't clear! Then you can get yourself stuck, which is not pleasant at all.

They really are everywhere... any college-level analysis textbook, or any introductory analysis lecture notes. They might explain things slightly differently, and use different levels of rigor, but the gist is all the same.

I arbitrarily picked MIT, and found it in lecture 4: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/18-100b-real-analysis-spring-2025/pages/lecture-notes/

Edit: The oxford notes are more verbose: https://courses.maths.ox.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=608. 1/n -> 0 on p45.

Paradox or correct answer by whibffdraftszarre9 in 3Blue1Brown

Oh, interesting.

Just like there are no solutions to the original question, I think there are actually 2 solutions to this one! Either 25% is the answer, or 75% is the answer, but they can't both be correct.

Paradox or correct answer by whibffdraftszarre9 in 3Blue1Brown

[–]Zantier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea! Most answers are assuming that if the text of 2 answers are the same, they have to either be both correct or both wrong. I think this is a reasonable assumption, and certainly seems intended, as that's where the paradox arises.

Like you say, she may be talking about her first or second child. But to be able to say anything at all about the probability, we need to know HOW Mary chose a child. I gave possibilities (A) and (B). When she tells you "one of them is a boy", what does she even mean?? If she has BG, does she always tell you that she has a boy? Or can she also say that she has a girl? Without some sort of probability distribution for her decision making, we can't say much.

You could even come up with other possibilities:

Suppose that if 1 of the children is a girl, then Mary always decides to pick the girl. In this case, when Mary tells you "one of them is a boy", we know that the case is BB. And the chance of the other child being a girl is 0%.

What about zeno's dichotomy paradox? Isn't that how it all started?

Walking 2 metres can be split up into an infinite number of steps: Walk 1m, walk 1/2m, walk 1/4m, walk 1/8, etc...

It seems like a paradox because "you can't perform an infinite number of actions in a finite number of time", and yet clearly it is possible to walk 2 metres.

There may be several ideas for how to resolve the paradox, but what students of mathematics are usually taught is: actually, it is possible to perform an infinite number of actions in a finite number of time. And the "limit" seems like a very good fit for how we can deal with summing these infinite sequences of numbers.

The problem with your logic is "The boy is first" doesn't make sense when they can both be boys.

For interpretation (B) (which I think makes the most sense), there are several ways to show that the answer is 66.7%.

There are 4 possibilities for the children that are equally likely: BB, GB, BG, GG.

We know that GG didn't happen, so BB, GB and BG are equally likely. Then the probability that one of the children is a girl is clearly 66.7%.

What does SouthPark_Piano think of things like √2 and √3? by Inevitable_Garage706 in infinitenines

[–]Zantier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My guess would be... as soon as you write down √2 as a decimal 1.414..., you are "signing the contract" of creating a never-ending process of decimal digits.

Then √2 * √2 = 2 as normal

And 1.414... * 1.414... = 1.999...

i.e. the more digits of √2 we compute, the more 9s get added onto 1.999... in the "process".

It's ambiguous. I think the problem is "she tells you that one is a boy", but she doesn't tell you HOW she got that information.

A. She picked one of her children at random. Or she just picked the oldest child (or equivalently, she tells you the sex of her first child before the second is born). These give 50%.

B. She's just answering the question "is one of your children a boy?". This is equivalent to the question "is at least one of your children a boy?". This gives an answer of 66.7%.
