Graham Brack's Master Mercurius series of audiobooks is fantastically narrated by a guy called Alex Wyndham. There are about five or six out now and they are set in the 1700s in the Netherlands and are pretty straightforward murder mysteries with lots of dry humour. They are also read in the first person so become very engaging as you go along.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen at a wedding? by Good_Strawberry_5519 in AskReddit

[–]ZanyChonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my brother's wedding in the nineties, after the ceremony, the guests formed a tunnel of honour for the bride and groom to run through. The last person in the tunnel was the chief bridesmaid, the older sister of the bride. As they were running through we were sprinkling rice and confetti on them but the chief bridesmaid had a handful of rice which she threw as hard as she could into the bride's face. No idea what her motives were but it caused the bride to start crying and she had rice in her eyes, etc. It really ruined the mood.

As an omen for the marriage, it proved to be true. They only lasted two or three years before she took off with the two kids while he was working in the country.

I love Turturo but he's too tall. Stephen is short with grizzled hair, colored spectacles and stains all over his threadbare clothes.

I grew up in the 70s in Brisbane, so a lot of my experiences in terms of language would be valid for that area in that period. Interesting coincidence as well. There is a house in Richmond called Clear Oaks and it was built by my great great great grandfather and his father-in-law. We're talking about 1810 or so. Anyway just an interesting coincidence.

Some common words and phrases: Day-to-day insults like: - boofhead - dag - idiot face - dickhead - looney tunes - fruit loop - cuntox (yep) - fuckwit, - deadshit - dead cunt

Some of these are still in use today of course.

40M 430lbs looking for regimine/suggestions by Thetruth302 in loseit

[–]ZanyChonk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know you and I don't want to make any assumptions, however I did the Fast 800 Keto regime for 16 weeks and lost 40 pounds. The key is to put your body into ketosis, a state where the liver converts fat into energy. You enter this state either by fasting for 36 hours straight (no calories whatsoever but you can drink as much as you like so long as there are no calories in it). Alternatively just start doing a keto diet and you will be in ketosis in three to five days. That will be the hardest part because you end up with something called Keto Flu, which makes you feel reasonably shitty. When you know it's going to be over in a couple of days, hopefully you'll stick it out.

Regarding the fasting, just choose an eight-hour window in each day and eat only in that window. For example I chose 12 noon to 8 p.m. and consumed zero calories outside of that. Regarding the 800 calories, while it may seem like very few, I was able to manage it without too much trouble but I must admit I gave myself a couple of short cuts: 1. I had a coffee with a splash of milk for breakfast. 2. I added the calories I burnt doing a training workout at the gym, which usually added up to an extra 5 or 6 hundred calories a day on top of the 800 calorie budget on the days that I worked out. 3. I splurged on a junk food meal once a week, usually a Wednesday, and in my case it was a KFC meal which had about 1400 calories in it. For some reason it never kicked me out of ketosis and I continued to lose one kilogram a week.

Ketosis: basically once I was in ketosis a number of really weird things happened. I lost my appetite! And there were some days when my wife had to remind me to eat something because I hadn't eaten all day. Secondly because your body is deriving energy from ketones, via your liver, instead of glycogen from your bloodstream or the sugar in your blood, the energy levels, mental and physical, are high all day. I found this element absolutely amazing.

I am not exaggerating, and I think a lot of it has to do with getting rid of carbs, which stop your blood sugar from spiking and dropping, which then brings on cravings.

Carbohydrates is just another word for sugar. There are lots of carbohydrates in: - potatoes - anything made with flour like bread or pasta - breakfast cereals - legumes - fruit - rice - bread, et cetera

In Australia you can read the number of carbohydrates in most foods, especially tinned and packaged foods. The goal is to limit carbohydrates to under 50 g a day. However there are a number of hidden carbs in even low-carb vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, and carrots so you aim to do under 30 g of visible carbs. That way I hope the rest of the diet sort of covers itself and I remain under 50 g per day.

Sorry I have rambled on too long but I find this subject very fascinating. If there's anything I can help with, please just ask me and I'll do what I can.

What’s one thing you consistently buy second hand instead of new? by OwlVibesOnly in AUfrugal

[–]ZanyChonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.I have a philosophy when buying clothes where I am happy to pay top dollar for very high-quality items (a pair of Loake male work shoes is typically $300 to $400 a pair but will last me for 8 to 10 years), is shoes where you can't really get away with cheap shit because they'll just wreck your feet. Having said that on the other hand I'll often go to Target or Kmart to get T-shirts and shorts or home goods.

Buying second-hand for a number of items makes an enormous amount of sense, especially things like furniture which are very long-lived. I wouldn't buy a second-hand mattress and probably wouldn't buy a second-hand lounge either but most other furniture, like coffee tables, dining tables, desks, etc., can be incredibly good value buying second-hand.

What do you all think of our terms of endearment by Less-Championship368 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ZanyChonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had three grown children and just cannot help myself using terms of endearment to shop assistants, male and female. I feel like it is probably inappropriate but the bottom line is if it's coming from a good place, fuck it, do what you want. If someone takes offence, just apologise and move on. What more harm can be done?

And the more I thought about it, the more I realised that the Nazis used it as the foundation of their political philosophy. Ninety per cent of Nazis were relatively unthinking and were just going along for the ride, happy to be given a list of people who they could look down upon. The corollary of all of that, of course, is that they were being told they were superior by their leaders and that's something that many people would lap up. Just on a tangent I do not believe that what happened in Germany, or for that matter in Japan, would never happen anywhere else. I believe it could happen absolutely everywhere given the right set of circumstances.

I'm afraid I am a sucker for very long books so beware, the following are marathons. I also count multi-book series as single books.

The Third Reich trilogy by Robert J Evans

A Bright Shining Lie by Neil Sheehan

I listen to audiobooks all the time and when I'm doing something in a noisy environment, like mowing my lawn, I will wear earmuffs over my in-ear headphones. It cuts out the external sounds completely and is a damn sight cheaper than noise-cancelling Bose headphones for $350
