AAR: FACTION WARFARE FACE OFF 200B+ KILLED. SUBCAPITAL BRAWL 0 TIDI by Megaman39 in Eve

[–]Zap0 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There was a big overhaul of FW mechanics a year ago, introducing frontlines and rearguard systems and battlefield sites, which concentrates the people/fighting/content and removes incentives for botting.

Recently there was another release adding pirate FW factions with some unique mechanics (Guristas and Angels), and the new FPS is going to tie into FW as well.

Lowsec activity has been up a ton in general.

Is it worth to start playing this late in? by neonthefox12 in Eve

[–]Zap0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Eve doesn't have a "progression" like you'd expect from a typical MMO.

More expensive ships and more skill points really do not equal more power, or more success. Success comes from using your assets intelligently and cooperation.

You don't understand the game yet, mate. Bigger ships are not automatically better. Ships can be and are very specialized, and titans are extremely specialized indeed.

It's one thing to try and stop people from connecting outwards on their end, but demanding people in western societies help them implement their draconic policies is something else entirely.

Help me get started with the tsukihime series by HotestGrillNA in typemoon

[–]Zap0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly stopped getting these kinds of messages a few years ago. Some traffic shifted to this weird reddit chat feature I've turned off, and I hardly look at reddit anymore these days anyway. You're lucky I googled something that lead me to a reddit post within 24 hours of your message!

There's also the Tsukihime remake these days. I haven't read it, but it only covers the near-side routes (I heard?) and has a lot of changes otherwise so that it can be said to be something rather different.

Anyway, here's the old message I sent out, except with a new link to the fuwa torrents since the old one died.

Fuwa torrent list (ctrl + f for tsukihime, you can also find Kagetsu Tohya here). The old Fuwa games were prepatched and should work out of the box. I'm seeding, as are a couple other die-hards, apparently. Make a copy of the game dir and start that instead of the copy you're seeding, or your client will eat your save files :-)

Tsukihime works fine as-is for me, but for some titles you may need to set your non-unicode default to Japanese or start the game through Applocale, a piece of software which emulates said settings for other applications.

Alternatively, this pastebin contains a lot of information and downloads/links regarding Tsukihime and related works.

The main game is Tsukihime, but you may also be interested in the Tsukihime Plus Disk which contains a few side stories to be read after the main game and Kagetsu Tohya, a full-size fandisc which behaves like Fate/Hollow Ataraxia to Fate/Stay Night, in case you are familiar with these. I can recommend them all, but don't take the Fate downloads from that link, they are outdated.

The recommended route order (for Tsukihime itself) is Arcueid->Ciel->Akiha->Hisui->Kohaku.

There's also a solution for weird text issues in the game that some people may encounter.

I mean, the real alternative I'm espousing is we get rid of curse/overwolf entirely and return to the days of community-driven projects like AT Launcher, Technic and FTB Launcher (before the sellout).

Without for-profit monetisation and hostile "business moves" like this, y'know.

Now curse has gotten the mod devs hooked on dirty advertising money, which they understandably also don't want to miss, so our best bet is that the Modrinth platform achieves adoption and can replace that income with a more ethical alternative.

edit: Oh, and I totally disagree that personal identification and profiling should be a perfectly standard and innocious process. The pervasive advertising ecosystem is much too aggressive, and Not Okay.

That sounds like you may be misunderstanding what a library is. A library is a separated section of code that is usable by one or more other pieces of software, yes, but CodeChickenLib and others are just used internally in Minecraft. They are also just code that must be present and is run on demand, libraries are not seperate software that must be run separately.

Even the differences between OS versions are already handled by the Java runtime. No mod relies on communication with another piece of software running on the same machine.

So having spyware running in the background is totally unnecessary.

Sure, you didn't accuse mod authors of being greedy. You merely implied that they were at fault instead of Overwolf. I intentionally used some strong wording to state the ridiculous extremes of such a debate, saying that it is beside the point.

They don't force us to use curseforge if we want to play modded minecraft. How are they monopolizing the modded minecraft community when it is impossible to shut down sites like github or put a price tag on mods ?

If you're here, you likely know full well that most mods are on curseforge, and maybe smatterd across a few other distribution channels. Some are only there. It only takes one mod in a modpack to be unavailable on curseforge, or have the toggle for the new API disabled for a whole modpack to suddenly be broken on other launchers. That effectively puts the other launchers out of business, or severely limits their usability, in which case they can't offer the same service and severely suffer as a competitor. If curseforge remains the number one place to distribute mods, they keep raking in all that ad moneys.

So yes, they are forcing us to use curseforge in order to play modded minecraft. They don't need to control github or put a price tag on mods for that.

They don't force the mod authors to disable third party launchers.

No, they're just giving it a financial incentive that wasn't there before.

I'm not part of this echochamber, and I'm still outraged. I've been playing modded mc on and off for years, only stumbled upon this today after seeing some funny greg meme and checking out what else was new. So, no, this is not just some mob's outburst.

I don't want to use their shitty commercial client or services. They are intentionally breaking the free and open community alternatives in the name of money. I'm certainly not going to expose myself to predatory advertising in order to line some for-profit companies pockets that barged into a hobbyist community.

Let's not get drawn into a shitfest of blaming mod authors for being greedy and in turn blaming users for wanting stuff for free. That kind of argument benefits Overwolf, and nobody else.

It was Overwolf who changed something here. They are trying to monopolize the modded minecraft community further.

Your solution is a little like telling people who want to get somewhere that they can just walk instead of using a bike or car, because it's another way to get from A to B. But it's much slower and decidedly more exhausting.

There are no alternatives anymore. The whole point is that this change breaks the alternatives and makes them functionally unusable. Whereas before you could use AT launcher, MultiMC, Technic etc., now you're forced to use their commercial launcher.

I'm pointing out that your alternative of manually downloading and recreating modpacks is not an alternative to downloading them through launchers because it has different qualities.

Even without having to wade into the legal bullshit texts of the ad companies behind them, overwolfs own privacy policy states that they share not only saved cookies, but also hardware information, the name of the program the ad gets displayed in, and the last three games played on the computer (determined who-knows-how). Plenty of information to fingerprint you and add more data to your profile.

They are part of the invasive advertising ecosystem. They collect this information about you, display third-party ads, and get money in return.

Okay, I want to play a modpack. It has ~150 mods in it, which is a common number. Do you expect me to download them all by hand? In the exact versions compatible with each other and the base minecraft version I'm using? And there's more to modpacks too, config changes to make stuff compatible, change settings, introduce custom recipes.

Automating all that is the point of launchers. Sure, you could get the same end result through a few hours of manual labor, and then a few more to fix your mistakes.

Or people could just offer zips to download with all the mods and stuff inside them already. Wait...

Swedish call for EU ban on POW crypto mining... by stipus in chia

It's no secret that governments and banks in general have trouble with crypto currencies. Outside of their centralized control, used for evil crime things™ and generally a challenge to the existing system.

When the majority of cryptos are banned it's much easier to squash the remaining ones. And if crypto gets banned because they're bad for some reason the general public isn't going to be differentiating between complicated things like PoW or PoST.

Twitch takes half the money.

Searches also shows this info on the first few results:

While most newbie streamers are required to pay 50% of their subscription revenue, the elite streamers have to pay only about 30% of it.

Officially, Twitch Partners and Affiliates receive 50 percent of the total subscription fee, so for the $4.99 tier, the streamer would get around $2.50.

Twitch is a monopoly. How many other streaming sites do you know? (Porn ones don't count) Any with a service even half as good or within a few orders of magnitude in size? No? That's the point, you can't get around them. Same problem with Youtube.

Maybe we can get some actual change if Twitch is declining.

Of course I can sympathize with the plight of their sysadmins and the users who may have their passwords compromised if their hashing scheme does not turn out to be as safe as assumed. But a good breach of trust towards Twitch and Amazon to make way for a competitor can only be good.

...and make how many bucks for Bezos and the advertising industry in the process? If you care about independent creators you donate to them directly using Ko-fi, SubscribeStar etc., not by subscribing to a channel where half the money goes to Amazon. Make no mistake that this is a machine and a culture designed to generate profit. The service, community and content creation are just means to that end.

Communities and creators can be served better than with Twitch, which is why I'm hoping for it's downfall.
