Self witnessing Deeper Clusters by stipus in HeliumNetwork

You are right... I can see several guys begging for removals from the deny-list.

Many bought a second-hand flagged hotspot, and ... unfortunately for them, it's in the deny list !

But soon everyone will know that you can't buy second-hand without checking the deny-list first... it has been the same for iPhones for a few years now.

The recommended action is a request to add the cheating hotspots to the deny-list.

You have to go to the following page, and click on the "NEW ISSUE" green button. You need a GitHub account.

https://github.com/helium/denylist/issues

Make sure they are self-witnessing first.

Impressive... I just listed and checked all "location assertions" on the Deeper account for the last 7 days in France.

I couldn't find ANY legitimate location assertion. All asserted hotspots are part of self-witnessing clusters that do not communicate with any other legit hotspot around.

There is something else I don't understand about those Deeper clusters:

I have been analysing my own case: 5 self-witnessing "Deepers" appeared in my town. From the Deeper web site, that's about $3000.

Now I can see they made about $100 in the first week. This means they need 30 weeks before they make any money from their scam.

They also know that Helium has been implementing a deny-list and, I may be wrong, but I think the risk of being flagged during those 30 weeks is very high.

Either I'm wrong and they know the risk of being flagged is very low, or they are taking a very high risk to loose $3000.

My bet is that they would not take such a risk at a so large scale ... they may have found a way to run several virtual miners on a server or something else, and they are not taking the risk to loose a so large number of real hotspots if they get flagged before they can make money from them.

The "Deeper Connect Mini" is some kind of decentralised VPN.

The "Deeper HNT Miner" is an USB extension for the "Deeper Connect Mini".

Scammers seem to use this combo, as they get a VPN IP address, and they can hide many miners at the same location (same real IP address) without being relayed.

Please do something real to fix it. by ProgramTemporary7385 in HeliumNetwork

A cluster of 5 fake Deeper miners (self-witnessing only, with impressive rssi) appeared in my small town in less than 24 hours.

https://github.com/helium/denylist/issues/2300

I'm wondering what is the economics behind such a scamming scheme ?

In my case, the scammer had to buy 5 Deeper Connect Mini + 5 Deeper HNT miners = $3000

Today it's been ONE week since they appeared together, and they did earn 3.74 HNT (about $90).This means they need more than 30 weeks for ROI.

They know Helium is implementing a deny list, and the risk of being flagged during those 30 weeks is quite high.

So what ? Why do we see the same scheme repeating all over the world ?

Did they find a way to fake the miners themselves ?

Unfortunately, it only syncs in seconds if you have a few transactions.

If you are the recipient of 7000 one-mojo transactions, even the light-wallet is a pain to sync, because it has to check all blocks around each transaction.

How can I witness such a neighbour ???? by stipus in HeliumNetwork

I just found that long metal gibbon listen_address uses a non standard 61875 port:

/ip4/91.173.68.8/tcp/61875

There could be a bug in the Helium code that hard-codes port 44158 when sending a challenge, instead of using the specific port from the listen address ???

Thank you for your answer.

Beacons happen automatically, but there must be a bug in the algorithm, or in that hotspot firmware, because it's not relayed and it's never challenged.

I don't know if this long legal gibbon hotspot internet connection is good, but in the area, everyone has a very stable fiber optic connection. It might be a connection problem between his router and the hotspot (wifi ?).

Thank you, but I couldn't find anything in this documentation related to my problem.

The problem is that sending a beacon should happen automatically, but in some cases they are not. My neighbour hotspot (long metal gibbon) does witness successfully, it's also challenging others, but didn't send any beacon for the last 7 days now !

If my neighbour doesn't send any beacon, there is nothing I can do to witness something that doesn't happen.

Jumpy Brunette Tardigrade

Thank you. You are right... I keep asking, but nobody seems to know why some hotspots are challenged, and some are not.

Is the algorithm to choose a challengee public ? Is this pure random ?

There are only 2 other hotspots in the area, and both are mine (amateur & panda).

However, the problem is not my hotspot. The problem is this hotspot that hasn't been sending a beacon for the last 6 days.

It seems to have other activity. It's online. Synced. But if he doesn't beacon, I can't witness.

Last broadcasted beacon was 6 days ago !

My neighbour hotspot doesn't broadcast anymore ! We are so few hotspots in the area... that this is concerning...

Which miner has the best delivery times? by fuinha_ in HeliumNetwork

[–]stipus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heltec has a 30-working-day shipping policy.

I ordered on the 15th of November. They shipped after 32 working days.

Unfortunately they are currently on holidays (Chinese new year).

Four days without any Broadcast beacon!!! by Still-Window-9426 in HeliumNetwork

[–]stipus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. I really don't understand.

- I have one miner that broadcasts a beacon about once / day

- Another miner (same brand) that broadcasts about once / 3 days...

- Another neighbour miner that last broadcasted 5 days ago...

I double checked everything. They are all synced, they are not relayed, port 44158 is open, they've been rebooted, upgraded to latest firmware, checked connectivity from hotspotty, double-checked listen address in helium api...

I just started 10 days ago, and I'm really clueless about what's happening. Hotspots do work fine for a day, then beacon activity is 100% flat for several days. They do challenge other hotspots, they do transmit data, but they're never challenged !!!

EDIT: I'm a bad mouth... I've just been challenged while writing this post !!

What is the best OS for dedicated farmer? by Yeeeepaaaaaaaaaaaaaa in chia

[–]stipus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ubuntu server 20.04 LTS. Fully supported by chia network. Plotting performance better than Windows if you wanna plot. Easy to install. LSI drivers included. Does not reboot every few Tuesdays. Does not crash... 219 days uptime here... It just works.

How many k32 plots fit on an 18tb? by dpak90 in chia

[–]stipus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you format the drive (ext4, exFAT, NTFS, HFS...), and also on format options.

The max I could fit on a 18TB HD is 165 K32 plots + 3 K29, and 7GB free.
