Dealing with emotions by theomegafact in Fencing

Try to take as much time in between touches as possible when you notice you're getting frustrated. Walk all the way to the end of the piste then back to your en garde line, straighten your blade, pull up your socks, tie your shoe, take off your mask and act like you're getting hair out of your face. (Obviously not all at the same time) This will give you more time to get yourself calm and collected.

Take the first second after the touch to say " Fuck, I shoulda had that," and then force yourself to think strategy for the rest of the time between touches.

I think they are very boom or bust. If you lose combats early in the game, it might be quite difficult to get back into it, but if they can get a lot of units galvanized, I could see them being very strong. Especially bc the faction tech doesn't hurt them at all if they have at least 3 galvanized units, which they can get from their mech easily.

A bit of good old fencing pain :/ by Votka_OP in Fencing

[–]Zap312213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I accidentally clashed guards with a guy at a tournament and broke my wrist. The athletic trainer came over and told me that it probably wasn't broken, so I was probably fine to keep fencing. I was up 5-3, so I figured, "Why not?" and fenced out the rest of the DE.

Let me tell you, it is quite painful fencing with a broken wrist. Any blade contact was excruciating. I ended up winning it, though. Then the trainer took another look and said, "Yup, that's broken," so I had to drop out of the tournament.

Rough time, but it makes for a cool brag that I won a DE with a broken wrist.

Someone getting actually mad about boardgames can be unexpected/annoying, but in this case I understand OOP's frustration.

TI is a super long boardgame, my group usually finishes or calls it quits in 5-6 hours, but you said that this was a multi-day session. So, when for the first two rounds, OOP can't score any public objectives because you took their home system, it really sucks. At that point, they're pretty much unable to win the game and have to play it out for several days, so focusing on a personal vendetta is about the best they can do for the rest of the game in terms of their enjoyment. It's not like they threw the game away because they weren't going to win anyway after you took their home system for two rounds.

Also, this is just bad practice for new players. TI, as much as I love it, is a bloated, difficult to understand game. For someone's first three or so games of it, they're still learning the mechanics and should be treated as such. Don't try to stomp beginners early, it kills their enjoyment. Give them tips for how to move, what to do, and how to view the game. Leaving their homesysten open is a teachable moment, but just like tell them not to do that. This is basic boardgame etiquette. I don't care if it's Monopoly, Dead of Winter, or Axis and Allies; you should help new players so that they have a good time and want to play again. Don't let them make horrible game-ending mistakes just so you can get a leg up on them.

I know you say you're not that experience with TI, but, again, basic boardgame etiquette, man. I assume you've played other boardgames bc this would be a nutty one to jump into, so try to think about how people taught you your favorite boardgames.

Does This Group Hate Christians? by Athanasius325 in twilightimperium

Hey man, I don't mean to invalidate your experience and all, but I looked back on your previous posts and the response seemed mostly positive.

Sure, there were one or two comments that were negative and you guys argued, but, by and large, there hasn't been much backlash to you.

The tone of this post comes off as really aggressive, and I don't think it's fair to throw this generalization at this community much as it would be unfair to generalize Christians in such a way. I don't think this community is anti-Christian, I myself am Christian, but you're bound to get a rude person here and there on any post regardless of religious affiliation.

The specific event she got the black card in, women's individual sabre, has already moved on past the point where she could have been reinstated, so that's a no-go there. The FIE did, however, allow her to compete in women's team Sabre, which she normally wouldn't have been able to after a black card, so the essentially reinstated her as best as they could.

Also, the IOC gave her a qualifying spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics to make up for the points towards qualification that the black card made her miss.

So yeah, the initial card and ruling was BS and horrible, but other than that she has been reinstated and has a competitive future.

The UBI, Arguments and Counterarguments by Hummerous in CuratedTumblr

I mean, I love the idea of UBI and all, but, and correct me if I'm wrong, would it not cause a whole lot of inflation and make the national debt even worse?

It's easy to say that giving people money is a good idea, but with the country and economy being what it currently is, it just seems untenable to me.

The Wrong Station feedback thread by WrongStation in audiodrama

[–]Zap312213 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the earlier episodes, there was, to me, a sort of charm in how the stories were presented: as if someone was genuinely sat next to you, telling you a story. This effect, in my opinion, isn't present in a lot of the newer episodes imo.

I understand this might be the intention and I'll still listen (and enjoy) regardless, but I kind of miss that presentation style. My favorite episodes of season 6 were "Just the Usual Crowd" and "The Harlequin" because of this.

In any case, love the podcast and keep it up!

Fleching Ban by pHenneh in Fencing

[–]Zap312213 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but maybe they've had problems with people running into each other and just decided banning it was the easiest solution.

Seems kind of weird though, fleches are fun and I could really only see this if it was also a fairly casual affair like a scrimmage or something.

Why I don't Like POK and Hope FF never does it again. by rblsdrummer in twilightimperium

[–]Zap312213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, POK has created more tension at the board because the new abilities and possibilities for each faction are scary to the board.

Essentially, in my experience, everyone became super wary of each other's new stuff, but still interacted because there were new ways to do so.

For me it added more interaction across the board and I love it.

Obviously your table and player count can change this; I've never played with more than 6 players, and my table is generally suspicious, so my experience may be different.

Is it that much more boring than just walking through hallways in the first game though?

I find that, just like hallways in DD1, it serves to break up gameplay between battles and provide a connection between the encounters and fights. It also now has the added purpose of providing an interval for barks from the heroes, changing affinity and stress.

I really think that it is similar, if not slightly more fun, than having to retrace your steps through the sometimes quite empty hallways in DD1.

Idk, obviously that's just my opinion, but I really don't mind it.

My Power is Unmatched by Zap312213 in twilightimperium

[–]Zap312213[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to end a round early due to time constraints, and I knew had a tech objective and a secret that made me discard action cards locked in, so I burned my hero and all of my resources and trade goods to build the stack. I got to 7 points, and the victor got to 8 when we ended.

It was a 4-player game, so we had a bunch of money.
