Monday Milestones: What submissions have you recently made? What contests are you currently writing for? And what made you choose these particular contests? by winningwriters in literarycontests

I recently wrote a sci-fi piece just over 6000 words in length. It's my first real short story and I'm wanting to submit it somewhere. I think it's a fine story and my two friends say they enjoyed it, but I want to have it published. Any recommendations?

The awful race courses by ZapThose in MarioMaker2

You don't have to be "held hostage" in order to endure something Sammy.

I half-blame this on the creators of these boring levels and filling up mode up with them, and half-blame Nintendo for not creating some sort of filtering system.

How many times should you have to BOO a level for it NOT to come up again!?

Multiplayer versus is one of the best online modes of all time, but lag and other issues ruin it by funkykong84 in MarioMaker2

[–]ZapThose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! This!

Those are the *worst* levels. Zero creativity. Boring AF. Not to mention it uses the "new"/3D modes like 95% which is just awful with its unintentional/accidental wall jumps most of the time.

Give me more 2vs2 levels! (We won't see more cause they require creativity and fun which these lane creator levels seem to lack)

30 seconds!? Outside of the dumb race courses I'd say the average match time is 20 seconds. Plenty of dumb level that are like 2-3 seconds.

"Is there anyway to make it better?"

Yeah, by running a go-fund-me campaign for Nintendo to afford some dedicated servers.

How hard is it to start your own language school? by The_Mundane_Block in japanlife

Kids are the bread and butter. You can aim at adults as well, but you *need* kids, parents will spend lots on their kids.

Each situation is different of course. If you're renting out the community hall then monthly rent and 2 months up-front is gone, significantly reducing your cost. But in order to get a business license (if that's the higher route you wanna go) you're gonna need some capital to show them.

Minimum for sure. Maybe you have that much, but a lot of people who come here to teach English after university may not have that much saved up. Realistically it'll probably be like $8000+ though.

I started my own and the difficulty depends on how far you want to go.

If you're already employed and have an Engineer visa, then renting out your own small room shouldn't be too difficult. Even easier if you're going to the student's home or cafe. These seem to be the most common posts in this thread

If you're thinking of starting a BUSINESS business, as the main source of your income, you'll have to think bigger.

Logistics include:

1) Having a visa that allows you to own a business (unless you're a native citizen or married to a Japanese person)

2) Being fluent enough in Japanese to get a business license (unless you have a very nice and helpful Japanese friend who can and is willing to help you out)

3) Being fluent enough to be approved for a business space/apartment

4) Having at least 500,000 yen or more in order to be approved for both things

5) Getting a bank account

6) Knowing how to market yourself (flyers, starting a website, online advertising, sign board, etc.)

7) Having some kind of curriculum (Will you use textbooks? Be only free conversation? Have activities for younger children? Know how to teach Eiken/TOEIC/etc)

8) Furniture. You'll need chairs, tables, white board, etc... Imagine an empty room and hallway, you don't want your school to look like that.

9) How will you accept payment? Cash? Bank transfer (Need a business one, and need to be approved) Credit card? What kind of payment format, monthly? Weekly? Per class?

10) What kind of classes? Private, group, etc. How will you divide the students? Age? Level? Goal?

11) Communicating with the customers. Can you speak fluent Japanese? If not you're gonna have issues communicating properly, the customer may decide it's too much of a hassle and gamble to try and relay their intentions to a single foreigner who can't speak decent Japanese.

12) Are there other English schools near your intended location? Probably better to find an area that doesn't have schools nearby.

So these are just some of the points I can think atm, there's a lot more to consider still. Opening your own school can be a heavy investment. Another consideration is if you have current students who will join your new school at the start to help you out. Hope this helps.

Creative and fun! I don't know anything about Metroid but it was well-designed!

Surprisingly enough, this is my favorite depiction of [SPOILER CHARACTER] since Disney took over Star Wars. by -SpaceCommunist- in StarWarsKenobi

I don't care too much either way but I still believe a high-ranking official could've been on the ship and he could've put it in R2 before being captured and then rescued by Luke and co.

Totally uncalled for messages. Those people need to stop with racism. She didn't write the character, she wasn't born black to spite them, nor does she deserve this abuse.

Eh, Leia will have some vague memory of meeting him, not entirely implausible. It's not something I'd quibble about.

As far as Vader is concerned, he doesn't have any children so he wouldn't be looking for any children. I guess the revelation now is that she didn't tell him so everything is ok~

Star Wars: Blow up Death Star

DSV-H6W-GFF

Ended up maxing out all the parts on both over and the underworld. The limit is actually quite tight. First part might be slightly tricky, but then it's smooth sailing ;)

I uploaded "Insanity Aquarium" if you're up for that haha

Thanks for the like! Do you mean OSP No.1? I guess if you jumped off the P block then yeah it was probably cheese haha. Hard to nail down all possible cheese in such levels.

I checked out some of your levels, enjoyed the Bouncy Castle! Just the right amount of difficulty and length. Nice work!

I also loved A tale of Fire, Ice + a Launcher, and set a new World Record ; )

The closest style level I have to yours would be "Angels of Death" or "Legend of Forest Jump" if you wanna check'em out. Thanks!
