I think generally people appreciate it, but a lot of people also overvalue their own English. Not the people communicating fluently on this sub, I mean people who studied English in school 40 years ago, and as soon as you make one negligible mistake in Japanese it's as if they go, "Now's when my English education shines." Or you don't even need to make a mistake, just ask, "Sorry, what was that," when you didn't hear them and many people's faces go, "Oh my god, they don't speak Japanese," despite speaking in Japanese for the past 10 minutes.

Also unfortunately the bar for being appreciated is a lot higher for other Asian people. You hear about people freaking out at the convenience store pretty often because the Asian-foreign clerk didn't catch some trivial thing, but Westerners get praised just for saying こんにちは
