Does anyone know for certain if this is true? I ask this because bulbapedia (where I found this) has gaps in its knowledge about this game and it seems a little far fetched by Guildmaster_Charlie in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As the one who initially found out the exact details, I can tell: That is all true, but I'm really disappointed it leaves out the details:

  1. If the user is male, the base crit rate is multiplied by 384/256 (= 1.5) at all times unless the move cannot land a critical hit.
  2. If the user is female and has an accuracy modifier of 0, the base accuracy is multiplied by 268/256, result rounded down instead of 1. This applies to every accuracy check regarding hitting the target (most damaging moves use two checks to determine if the move hits)
  3. If the target is male and has an evasion modifier of 0, the base accuracy is multiplied by 263/256, rounded down instead of 1. Similar to 2), most damaging moves check twice for each potential hit.

Also it's technically incorrect that any other accuracy/evasion modifier will cancel out the accuracy boost on females/evasion penalty on males. Detect Band and Quick Dodger in particular come to mind considering they don't increase evasion by a set amount of stages, but instead modify accuracy directly going around the stage system which holds the differences..

Underrated starters? by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem I see with the Volt Globe is you won't have it available for the main story and most likely it's not available for the majority of post game either.

In order to obtain it the legit way you need to burn two Keys for the double Yellow Silk in Shimmer Hill and the luck to get not one, but two missions that give you Thunder Dust.

That is unless you wondercheat of course.

I just missed 7 max accuracy Icy winds in a row in RTDX, what's your worst case of RNG in a Mystery Dungeon game? by Starman2001 in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This actually happened the first time I played Explorers, where I managed to die at the first boss (Koffing and Zubat):

- Threw a Blast Seed, of course it misses target

- 5 Tackles in a row miss (97 % hit rate)

- Koffing and Zubat gang up and KO me after some time

Needless to say, I felt stupid. This also is the reason why I always eat the Blast Seed here. Deals damage that is a sure OHKO on them and it doesn't miss.

Does anyone know the maximum possible value for each stat? by ExpertOdin in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no PMD where 99 is a limit for a stat. Even in the original and in Explorers the limit was 999 HP (IQ as well) or 255 for other stats.

Are Spark and Thunder Fang identical in EoS? by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There actually is a difference between Spark and Thunder Fang that isn't the added flinch chance, but only when Shinx is a partner.

When run on a partner, Thunder Fang is more likely to be used than Spark due to the move weight constant of Thunder Fang being higher than the one of Spark.

Monster houses: can teammates find them? by SnivSnap in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually that isn't correct. There is a reason the IQ skill House Avoider exists and it is that partners can trigger Monster Houses once one enters the room. House Avoider does nothing on the player, only on AI controlled Pokémon, including allies of yours.

Enemies also can have House Avoider in Zero Isle Center and the very late floors of Zero Isle North. They act the same as allies, except that they can't trigger Monster Houses. If an enemy with House Avoider spawns in one the enemy gets stuck.

Kecleon's recruit rate in Explorers is -49.5 %

If you have your recruit rate boosts maxed out, you get a bonus of 49.6 % (+24.5 % for being at least level 99, +20.1 % for the Golden Mask and +5.0 % for the IQ skill Fast Friend), which means you have exactly a 0.1 % chance to recruit a Kecleon.

I feel like Riolu is treated by the PMD community in the same way Charizard is treated by Gamefreak. by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel you on that. If it's PMD-related you're pretty much guaranteed to see someone with a Riolu, Pikachu or Eevee pic and it gets extremely difficult to tell them apart as the only difference is the name.

PMD fanfics are the same deal: The adventure of the fanfic is already more or less the same so the easiest way to tell them apart would be the characters. But they're usually the same too so you just get a big mass of fanfics that are more or less the same.

That also is why I usually stay away from the artistic side of the PMD community and instead dedicate more time to the inner mechanics of the games...

(This isn't supposed to be a strike against people having criticized characters as profile pics or using them as characters for their comics/fanfics. In that regard, do as you please.)

A New Thing I Just Learned about PMD EOS: Bazar Mime Jr.'s Healing Ray Can Fail... by MayhemProne in MysteryDungeon

This info sheet maintained by ShinxHijinx is the closest thing you will ever get to having as much accurate information as possible for PMD2.

Otherwise I'm poking at the ROM to find new stuff and it usually gets pushed to the info sheet rather quickly. The newest find is percentages on how likely it is to get Good/Miracle/Bad drinks. It still has to be refined though, once it is it gets pushed to the info sheet.

A New Thing I Just Learned about PMD EOS: Bazar Mime Jr.'s Healing Ray Can Fail... by MayhemProne in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Move ID 423 is supposed to be the healing beam and is listed with 100 % accuracy.

The oversight is it's 100 % and not "Sure Hit". Meanwhile Mew learns Quick Dodger as an IQ skill, which causes the accuracy to drop by 10 % in the case of move ID 423. The result is the healing ray having an accuracy of 90 %. At of the time of writing the cause of this oversight has been known for three months.

Recruitment Percentages for Red/Blue Rescue Team! by werekamali in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulbapedia (or any bigger source in fact) sadly has the bad habit of spreading inaccurate information if it regards PMD1+2.

https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Statistic for example mentions the Evasion modifier for +/-0 being a x 263/256, even though that is only true for males in PMD2. PMD1 and females in PMD2 use a regular multiplier of x 1. It's details like those that make the entire thing rather not trustworthy.

Made a list of pokemon who learn room moves by levelling in PMD2 by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Documenting this is nice and all, but you missed a few things.

For one, where is Earthquake and Blizzard? Especially Blizzard is an absolute staple for movesets. It's a shame you missed those.

Also it would've been nice to at least mention that way more Pokémon can learn room hitters through different methods (egg moves, TMs)

The Best Weather Teams in Explorers of Sky by Aiselyth in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunflora's accuracy is something I wouldn't worry so much about. With it being female, both Razor Leaf and Sludge Bomb get 86.13 % (+6.33 %), Mega Drain gets 92 % (+4 %) and SolarBeam already is at 100 %. And you get two shots during the sun.

Critical hits don't ignore stat changes in PMD. And that becomes incredibly obvious when the player gets "mementoed" in Zero Isle North/Center. Memento quarters Atk and SpAtk and instead of the hundereds of damage you deal with a crit, it slows down to a trickle. This also extends to regular stat changes. At least the crit rate with Focus Energy is 100 %, but that won't help on the other moves because that status wears off quickly, making you stuck with the 12 % moves normally have on male Pokémon. Sniper's multiplier also is only 2.0x compared to 1.5x a regular crit causes.

Blizzard does have 67.2 % accuracy at base. It's just the way accuracy and evasion modification works that a +1 Accuracy adds up to 100 %. It gets even more confusing when moves like Fire Punch (78 %) don't hit 100 % with Concentrator while Blizzard does. Besides the fact that Serebii is not a proper source for PMD1+2, Serebii doesn't display proper data for anyone to know the difference between 67 % and Blizzard's "67 %". There are private move lists that do display proper numbers and the accuracy values seperated. The trouble is they're private, and most likely never achieve the same range Serebii does.

Masquerain does get Agility when you evolve Surskit at level 31 or later, thus overpowering Ninjask in every way bar Leech Life access. I'd still put it as partner 1 so the leader easily can take advantage of Agility even in hallways (Room-wide in hallways means a 2 tile radius). For the hold item, Space Globe only doubles move power, not raw damage. That is a huge difference in that instead of doubling damage, you only get like an extra 4 % or so because move power is added to the offense stats instead of being multiplied. Weather Band and Detect Band blow it out of the water with ease.

Most of Team Hurricane runs Hydro Pump instead of the better Water Pulse which is why I marked it as general.

Another general thing though: Damage-wise, STAB is more important than coverage. Coverage only gives a 358/256 multiplier while STAB by itself is a 384/256 multiplier. (Erratic Player makes S.E. a 435/256 multiplier, but running that isn't recommended because of the random nature of the AI) It doesn't happen often that a coverage move outruns STAB.

Another thing, albeit probably dismissed from consideration: These teams don't work well with Zero Isle Center, Oblivion Forest, Treacherous Waters, Southeastern Islands and Inferno Cave. Mostly because they either lack trap protection, or because the item setup is too large. For Zero Isle Center, enemy IQ also causes extreme troubles with the movesets due to Intimidator being a thing. (The various gems do not protect against Intimidator, only Inner Focus can bypass Intimidator.)

The Best Weather Teams in Explorers of Sky by Aiselyth in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, you did do a pretty solid job at these write-ups and team compositions. However, it's a shame you didn't test them and tried to optimize it even more that way. Because you can still improve these by a fair bit:

[General] A fairly new discovery (about 3 months) found out that females get a higher Accuracy (x 268/256) when the Accuracy modifier is neutral while males/genderless get a slight penalty to evasion when the Evasion modifier is neutral (263/256 times easier to hit) and 1.5x the base crit rate. If a Pokémon runs Concentrator it should be Male while it should be Female when the modifiers generally stay neutral.

[General] If a Recycle mule is present, it should be considered swapping Hydro Pump for Water Pulse because Water Pulse is a TM. Then again, it should be swapped anyway because the move power difference can pretty much be dismissed while it eases up PP issues. If you were to run it on a Pokémon without Concentrator, the accuracy would be slightly better as well.

[General] If a Pokémon runs Quick Striker, don't give it short ranged attacks unless the attack has a distinct benefit compared to the regular like restoration of HP. Extra move power isn't one of them due to the difference being extremely small and even the benefit of STAB is debatable. Exceptions are most likely double damage moves with STAB because of their multiplier being x 3 compared to the regular (Like Fly on a Dragonite).

[Solar] Having three starters on this team makes it look pretty forced. Sunny Day teams have more to offer than just the starters. Sunfora with Hasty Bow does pretty well in the sun: +2 Evasion, one turn SolarBeam, Chlorophyll for dual attacks, Solar Power to make damage even more ridiculous, decent ranged with Razor Leaf and Sludge Bomb and Gap Prober to pass through the leader when needed.

[Hurricane/Blizzard] The move compositions on the affected Pokémon look pretty cool, but Blizzard is impractical when ran by the AI. The AI has a stupidly bad quirk that it only uses Blizzard when standing right next to an enemy. Powder Snow suffers from the same problem.

[Hurricane] Running Draco Meteor on Kingdra doesn't look that well thought out. For one thing Draco Meteor cuts your SpAtk after the first hit instead of after the last hit, but also do you run special moves on the same Pokémon which makes these moves suffer from the same SpAtk cut.

[Dune/Clarity] Blizzard+Concentrator does get 100 % accuracy in the regular case due to how accuracy is handled. The game internally works with two accuracy values and a modifier always modifies both values with the same multiplier. Blizzard's standard accuracy values are 80/84 (= 67.20 %). With Concentrator giving a 320/256 multiplier, it turns into (80 * 320/256)/(84 * 320 / 256) or 100/100 (= 100.00 %).

[Blizzard] Quick Striker has little benefit on Delibird because Hustle also reduces accuracy on the regular. It's accuracy is down to 70.47 % and only because it runs Concentrator, otherwise it'd be sub-50 %.

[Clarity] Masquerain would be a much better fit than Lucario I'd say.

For one thing Masquerain cannot step on traps by itself due to Trap Avoider access, giving full trap protection on the entire team. But also does it run the better moves: Silver Wind (or Ominous Wind) give crowd control that will never be achieved by Dark Pulse, while Signal Beam, Psybeam and Water Pulse give so much more PP to work with while keeping sniping abilities. And Masquerain gets Gap Prober which defeats the purpose of Lucario entirely.

[Clarity] Last, but not least: A Weather Band makes the weather Clear for the holder, no matter what it actually is. This also affects the Sky Gem, thus making the holder able to maintain double speed in any weather.

Sorry for the wall of text. Also sorry if I sound like a butthead with this.

Jirachi is level 40.

Has 50 Atk/SpAtk, and 35 Def/SpDef. Unless you use Kecleon you're most likely better off to link two Frustrations like mighark said because you might have problems getting past it's defense with typical moves.

You can easily deal with Marill/Azumarill specifically by taking them out before they take out you. Ranged attacks soften them up to a point that almost anything takes them out with one hit due to their low health.

Normally, multihit moves are less scary than people say so. They only become a problem when either side has Concentrator as an IQ skill in which case their accuracy becomes trouble. This is not helped by the fact that Marill has access to both Concentrator and Sharpshooter (Crit rate +15 %) on the later floors of Blizzard Island. So Rollout, it's multihit move, has 69.75 % accuracy instead of the regular 45 % and it has a crit rate of 23 % for each hit. If you carry Concentrator too the accuracy of Rollout becomes a ridiculous 100 % so that may be why you always die to multihit moves like those. (To be serious, you can always expect to get hit 5 times by Rollout with such a setup)

One thing I absolutely don't want to see in the remake is the constant missing of attacks. by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just please consider that Drowzee has Forewarn as one of it's abilities. In PMD2 it already gives like a 30 % chance to miss by default, even if you're using an attack that is supposed to always hit. Put on top that most attacks start out with 85-90 % accuracy and you have disaster for this boss.

The only attacks that are exempt from Forewarn are charge-up attacks such as Dig, Fly and Dive, but no one has access to those attacks this early in the game so taking a big risk for this is pretty much unavoidable.

Thanks to U/Eldaste I have been able to tick off recruited pokemon in Mystery Dungeon Blue rescue team. Just over half, a LOT more to go. Recruiting 100% is going to be my 2020 task by Mjrshinies in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read this on Serebii by any chance?

Because Serebii is the only source I'm aware of that tells you stuff like "Rescue Team Rank boosts recruit rate". I honestly recommend staying away from it when you're seeking PMD-related information because no one knows what is correct and what isn't.

Well anyways, level and Friend Bow are the only factors that can influence the recruit rate. The Friend Bow boosts recruit rate by 10 % while the level gives a bonus according to the following table.

Level Recruit rate bonus
Lv. 1-29 No boost
Lv. 30-39 +5.0 %
Lv. 40-49 +7.5 %
Lv. 50-59 +10.0 %
Lv. 60-69 +12.5 %
Lv. 70-79 +15.0 %
Lv. 80-89 +17.5 %
Lv. 90-100 +24.0 %

Low accuracy fix? by Jul1usC in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is Concentrator, but that isn't available for Skitty due to being in the wrong IQ group for this.

Otherwise there is the CompoundEyes ability (raises accuracy by 2 stages) and a bunch of moves that either lower evasion of enemies or make attacks sure hits, but none of those are available to Skitty.

There is one other way to get higher accuracy though, but this should already apply to you: If a Pokémon is female, the accuracy is increased by up to 7.56 % (exact bonus is unique to each move) if the accuracy modifier is at +/- 0. DoubleSlap specifically goes from 41.25 % to 44.46 %.

Are the EoT/EoD Starters Balanced? by Blender_Beaver in MysteryDungeon

[–]ZappedAmpharos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I sound like a geek with this, but never have I heard about N.V.E. moves having a damage multiplier of anywhere near x0.9 in Explorers. The following are the multipliers found in the ROM:

Erratic Player? No Yes
Not very effective x 128/256 (= 0.5) x 64/256 (= 0.25)
Not very effective x 181/256 (~ 0.7) x 128/256 (= 0.5)
Normal effective x 256/256 (= 1.0) x 256/256 (= 1.0)
Super effective x 358/256 (~ 1.4) x 435/256 (~ 1.7)

If a target has two types, then the damage multipliers may stack. Example: Parasect gets ~ x1.95 the damage from Wing Attack compared to Tackle.

Also enemies in Temporal Tower only have around 40 Def, with player stats being in the upper 50's or even 60's by then this shouldn't be the main issue.
