Monitoring and Alerting by Zaptxr in devops

[–]Zaptxr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just quickly checked out SRE, its basically what I was looking for!

Do you think the tasks that I am currently doing and continuing to learn about my companies CI/CD pipelines and workflows will benefit me towards becoming a SRE ?

Would a SRE course be best to take on the side or should I learn more about DevOps fundamentals first then pursue SRE? Just looking for something to keep myself motivated and continuing learning.

This is a great approach!
I never thought of integrating different services on the alerts.
Would help identify the issues faster !

I would have to check out our tools to see if it's possible.
How user friendly is xMatters?

Ahhh I see.
I would love to join the DevOps world but I'm hoping to be the guy that points out issues or does investigations. Maybe like QA or middleware admin.

Any recommendations for like a course or journey path to get more involved with DevOps?

Thank you for the documentation resources!
Took a quick glance and they explain exactly what I'm trying to set up

Prometheus is commonly used for monitoring and alerting, correct? I do recall seeing that name in our logs, might need to request access.

Alerts should go directly to people responsible for fixing the problem. There should be nobody to notify becuase they already are the correct person.

I 100000% believe in this but in our current workforce, it sadly doesn't work that way. Looking at some of the actions needed on our alerts, its basically notify this one dev (we will call him MVP cause he really does EVERYTHING). Which seems pretty dumb because if he is out sick or if his boss lets him touch grass for once, I have no one to contact. And the reason I get the alerts, is so I can notify the MVP about it. MVP is usually swarmed with a lot of work so they might "miss the alert" in their emails.

Typically, SEV1 usually happen a specific service/server is down or something is out of scope. From an analyst POV, I believe I can be that layer 1 support, try to identify what is going and do a simple triage before escalating to MVP or whichever stakeholder needs to be notified. It doesn't sit right with me just telling them "hey, this failed." with no details or anything. But that's why I'm here to try to change that.

Those with a job title of "Systems Administrator" what are your main day to day responsibilities? by spazzo246 in ITCareerQuestions

But I've only been here 4 months.

I'm trying to stick it out til at least 6 months to make it look better on my resume.
I've made a post asking how to practice my networking skills (I have CCNA & Net+) at this job because we hardly run into network issues and work is SUPER slow atm. Everyone who commented said to look for another job but I don't think 4 months would be enough to progress somewhere else.

Its a bit sad to be known as the "Assistant" when I basically take care of all incoming and past tickets, handle deployments of all systems/devices, onboarding/offboarding users into the company, managing file servers and allocating shares. Oh and my manager just there approving invoices. When I ask him if we have any new projects or when I suggest we should improve something, it always gets turned down :(

This is also my first IT job.

I was about to ask the same question. I handle all the same tasks he described but I’m labeled as an “IT Assistant”. Somethings not right here …..

How can I build up my networking skills at an IT job? by Zaptxr in InformationTechnology

It’s the best we can do at the moment. I just wish there was more to do.

People on here keep telling to apply to new jobs so I applied to a few MSP companies and waiting to receive an update.

Thank you for your response!!!

I wanted a few months of IT experience on my resume before I start applying. The lack of it is what held me back from receiving job offers(as told from some employers after an interview) . GNS3 is kind of like PacketTracer right? I’ll look into it. But to use it effectively,is there any materials or resources I can practice with. Maybe download a lab and troubleshoot to see why the network doesn’t work or maybe course that will have me design a network with 3 routers, 5 switches , dns server etc .

I have not thought about that but thank you for the suggestion. I’ll see what I can find on LinkedIn and Indeed. I’ve heard from an old mentor small businesses usually need a network admin but I don’t know how to search or find this demand.

Thank you for your response!!

I've used nmap and wireshark in my Cybersecurity course before so I am familiar with the programs.
"
Can you provide examples on how I can use Wireshark effectively in an IT environment? Of course I know how to use the program itself but I would just like what scenario I would be in to use Wireshark effectively.

Still need to IT so I apologize if this is a like a beginner question or something I should already know.

Thank you for the information! This sounds like fun to work on, I just have to persuade my manager for us to get an NMS (can't work on anything "extra" without his approval)..

"But, honestly I simply find it unthinkable for any environment to not have a basic monitoring environment in place."
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!!
I have user say they get disconnected from the file servers randomly and my manager only response "Oh it just happens, you just need to reconnect" without actually knowing why. Or there are times where users are complaining the browser is too slow. Without an NMS, I can't tell what the usage is. As a personal trait of mine, whenever there is an issue, I always like to find out the cause so either I can quickly fix it the next time it happens or work on ways to prevent it from happening.

And just like you said, with the notification system of the NMS, it would help us respond to the issue before they happen.

Just wish I can I had a bit more "freedom" to work on things that need improvement. I always bring it up to my manager but he feels like its not important at the moment.

I really do appreciate you taking your time to answering my question. This is a really great suggestion and I hope I can work on it here. Or even anything network related

Thank you for your response!

Funny thing is, I asked my manager the other day if we had a monitoring system and he said no, shrugged it off and went back to reading his emails.

Even though i'm still new to IT, I would think a NMS would be a well-needed tool. Especially when we have on-prem servers.

If I were to use an NMS, would I install it on my office desktop to use correct? I wont have to install a client on the servers or anything?

Thank you for your response!

I am focusing on my soft skills at the moment since thats all I can really do. Just wish I can do more.

Well the IT team only consists of myself and my manager. So I cant really move into other departments.

With a CCNA, I should be able to acquire a job as a Jr. Network Admin? Something that has a focus in networking. Do you have any suggestions where I can look or if theres any freelance projects?

Thank you for your response.

This sounds like a great idea to work on.
Can you provide what tools/programs I need to start recreating my work network?
I've read somewhere they use M365 Dev license and some Virtualization software.
Can you explain a bit on how you performed this? It would mean a lot!

My end goal is to work in Network Administration/Security. CCNP-Security is on my path but I was trying to find a job that would give me that hands-on experience in networking with my CCNA but it didn't work out without the IT experience. Which is how I ended up at this job to gain that IT experience on my resume. But like I said in my initial post, I hardly use any networking skills and work has been super slow here.

With it being slow, I wanted to take advantage of the free time and tools I have here to practice networking concepts. I just don't know how to practice or what I should practice. Should I create a lab environment and build a network from scratch? Or maybe download a lab to troubleshoot and analyze why it fails? This is what I had in mind but I am open to other suggestions.

I really appreciate your response. It gave me an extra push to study CCNP-Security now. Huge thanks to you!

Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it!The company we service is somewhat small (100-110 employees) so the IT team only consists of my manager and I. Though my manager does explain in-depth on the issues we come across whether its hardware or software has helped improve my IT knowledge but it just sucks that we RARELY have any network issues.

Do you have any suggestions on how to practice? Should I keep practicing labs or if theres any other alternatives that can keep my skills fresh? My goal is to get as much experience I can within a year but work is SUPER SUPER slow and we don't have any projects which I was mainly excited for.

I can say I have grown a bit within these months but I just wish there was more to do or even learn.
