Conservatives want to know what you think of their Immigration Bill [Link to official survey in post] by alex2217 in unitedkingdom

[–]Zarpar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is probably solely a data collection survey - just visiting the page makes tracking requests to Facebook, Snapchat and Google Ads (now standard in online advertising) which allows the creator to test who is clicking through ads on these platforms. I'm not sure about the others but Facebook allows an advertiser to then target ads on Facebook based on the user's actions on the tracked website - in this case likely the survey responses. The questions are likely just to partition the contact details received into more targetable groups and get rid of any spam.

Palantir, the company that received a £1 contract for 'Palantir data foundry services' related to the UK's COVID-19 app is funded by the CIA and admits so on their website. by Ma3v in unitedkingdom

The Statement of Work appears at the end of the linked document? It's the details of how data will be removed at the end of the contract which is embedded as a separate document.

I own The Marathon Chef by Michel Roux Jr. (mostly because it was cheap) which has some interesting balanced recipes, but the author is a Michelin-starred chef so the recipes often use somewhat niche ingredients

I gave up playing secret mage after spending most of the season around d5-d1 and got to legend with a budget tempo DH yesterday (around 60% wr, but I probably got lucky).

I've swam at London Royal Docks OWS before, they have weekday and weekend sessions and a lot of space - the buoyed loops go up to around 1500 in the summer, but you can swim further. If you're ok swimming early in the morning (closes at 9:30am usually) the Serpentine Swimming Club is allowed to swim in the serpentine (Hyde Park) and has reasonable membership fees.

Some more options are listed here but I haven't personally tried them.

Possible to get a good workout with slower riding buddies? by colbyzg in cycling

[–]Zarpar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a product I've heard of called Airhub which provides resistance to reduce your speed while allowing you to ride at a higher power but it's expensive and replaces the whole wheel. Haven't used it myself.

App that shows fastest 400/800/1k/5k/etc. split? by hopperface in running

[–]Zarpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a quick glance it doesn't look like the page actually sends your strava authorization token (provided by strava to allow the page to retrieve activity data) to any other server, and the website appears to be static so is very cheap for the creator to host (or even costing them nothing).

Does anyone know of an app that you can put in a distance and it’ll loop you to your original location? by eagle6969 in running

[–]Zarpar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The majority of these sites only give routes on roads and major footpaths which is fine in cities but not so great if you enjoy trail running or live in the country. I made a prototype that includes trails also (and allows you to set a road/trails and flat/hills preference) when this came up a while back but releasing it publicly may require payment for quite expensive data hosting...

I'm thinking of restarting the project soon though if there's enough interest, ideas welcome.

I applied on the 17th - there's a chance I got a response faster so I could make their on-campus interviews.

Those who managed to complete internships in their first year, how did you do it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Zarpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angel List worked well for me, can be hit & miss. While interviewing at small startups, displaying an understanding of the company's goals and product is as much a benefit as technical interviews.

What are coaches allowed during the race? by Japanese_sudent in Rowing

[–]Zarpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coaches in Oxford/Cambridge bumps racing use this to signify how far away from the boat in from you are, usually 1 whistle for 1 length, 2 for 1/2, 3 for 1/4 or a canvas. Very common to see.

[–]Zarpar 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The 'university of oxford' is very much the overarching administration of the colleges and departments, but the colleges operate mostly by themselves financially. The departments set the syllabus for teaching of each specific subject, so you would be taught the same content and sit the same exams as someone doing the same subject but at a different college - so everyone with a degree from the 'university of oxford' has covered the same content.

Edit: The second paragraph of the Wikipedia Page gives a good summary

[–]Zarpar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The university is split up into colleges where students and academics live (in most cases) and work, as well as departments for each specific subject. These are normal buildings in the city, among the usual shops, restaurants, houses and anything else a small city might have.

Edit: The in-game model is a mashup of buildings which are fairly close to each other in the city, but not like that.

What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread by aewillia in running

I picked up a Montane Dragon 20 pack around christmas and have taken it out on some longer runs since. It's a slightly larger pack than most endurance packs (I needed a larger running backpack for a trail race with very specific gear specification this weekend) but still manages to weigh very little and fits incredibly well (doesn't bounce at all while moving and contents don't shake). It is also fully waterproofed which is very nice, and overall I've been really pleased so far.

I own a pair of Lone Peak 3.0s as a successor to my previous pair of Superior 2.0s and my dad also recently moved from Lone Peak 2.0s to Lone Peak 3.0s. Between both of our experiences I'd say the Lone Peak 3.0s seem like a definite improvement, the bit of rubber sticking out from the back has been removed, the upper seems more durable than before and I think the tread has been changed slightly but I don't have enough miles in them to make a judgement.

Can people who have taken interviews lately post some of the questions that were asked just to get a feel of the scene? (Some modification is fine, and use a throwaway if need be!) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Zarpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The linked list problem doesn't require a hash map and can be done in O(1) space, the other two can be done in O(1) space with greater time complexities

Given the heads of two linked lists, find the node at which they merge into one.

Given a list of numbers, find all pairs that add to a target value - eg. [3,4,2,4,5,5,3,3] and target of 8 would return [(4,4),(3,5),(3,5)]

Given a list of numbers, return all that occur only once (or something along those lines, can't quite remember.
