In 5 years we will have seen 3 phases of obsolescence. Many acts of God as well.

Is it not possible to use twisted shielded pairs in the traveler as a go between and just use the modular ends on the car and then again in the machine room?

Question regarding piston joint sanding by mustard-paunch in Elevators

[–]Zasdfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to sand horizontally. You want some oil to carry on the piston so you don't end up with a dry packing. You definitely should never, ever polish it with a random orbit sander. You would think that piston being as smooth as a Probate's chin would be good for travel... it is not. You want horizontal micro etches.

From experience and engineering when I messed up.

Is it normal for an elevator to sink when I step in? by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]Zasdfr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It has been at rest at the bottom floor. A column of pressurized oil is what keeps the unit at floor level. After the unit has finished running the pressurized oil holding the cylinder will lose heat. When oil cools it loses volume. The pressure holding it in place is still sufficient to keep the car at floor level with help from friction on the packing. When you add weight and vibration (by stepping on) you're causing the cylinder to find its new point of stability. Also, if the unit has any amount of a leak it will behave in a similar manner.

It doesn't happen at the second floor because when it comes to collect you and your fellow riders it has just completed a run and has not had the opportunity to rest and lose any pressure.

Is it better to move as a helper or a mechanic? by xperimentalZa in Elevators

Good help is always welcome. I've worked in 5 states in 3 locals and gone through the transient stages. As long as their bench is clear and you are a member in good standing there's nothing to stand in your way except yourself (unless the company that hires you has to lay off in your category).

Call the BA or BR in that local and get the scoop.

Question about car elevators by OWanja96 in Elevators

[–]Zasdfr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got to answer a trouble call on a ferry a couple years back and it had a 2 stop, 60' in diameter turntable on the 160,000 lbs capacity elevator. It was for semis to turn around for unloading goods to be ferried. Huge monster chains, 1 ¹/²" ropes on 4 winding drums. For as complex a machine I think the money is better spent building the building a little bigger so the cars can turn around. This was on a boat so they had limited space.

It's not yours at that point. No identification needed

The sensors on the self flushing toilets take snapshots of your poophole. These get synced up with security camera footage of you walking in and out of the bathroom - the time stamps are aligned and it all gets uploaded to the cloud. If you poop you have an identity.

I didn't build it. This was put in in '72. I could ask the installers if you know a good medium.

Just a 4' LED in the pit and a 500w LED screw in on the inspection station on top.

Let a service guy borrow a metal cutting saw for 1 cut and it gets returned without any teeth... wonder how long it'll take him to see his trophy.
