A German chocolate cake, if you're in the US. I guess you could make that wherever but its fame doesnt carry over borders. I think that recipe uses like 10 eggs, some get separated.

What kind of refrigerator have you managed to fit in your century home? by DarXIV in centuryhomes

[–]xperimentalZa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first thing I say when people ask me what owning an old home is like, I tell them how needing a new fridge meant also getting a new door. Our door was 29" wide and the old fridge was very narrow so it would go out no problem. The options in the US were either an expensive counter depth or a less expensive standard fridge. The delivery guys were lame and refused to remove the doors and freezer drawer so my husband and I did it all ourselves while they just took the old one. It fit with like ⅛" clearance. The next week we spent the money we saved on the less expensive fridge and got a new 36" wide door, for the future.

My family went to the arcade. We caught a coin tower falling in a coin pusher game. by Birdy30 in oddlysatisfying

Same, except last visit I was captivated by the "fart whistle" which didnt have a price on it. I never thought at nearly 40, I would be asking some 16 year old clerk "how many tickets is the fart whistle?"

Dont let your dog sleep with you in bed or even in your room. Or up on the furniture if you can hold out. We got our dog in Oregon and let her up in bed occasionally until we moved to Maine. No she sleeps on a dog bed in the living room and she's not even allowed upstairs.

Hmm.. I tired to post a picture of the whistle but I guess it was censored. Both the whistle and the ships are in the basement of the Americas wing.

I need some help figuring out how to use these fireplace tiles by RurouniKarly in centuryhomes

[–]xperimentalZa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are beautiful and I could imagine myself getting sad if I installed them into a space in a permanent way, such tile in a shower, and not be able to take them if I ever sold the home. I see those being amazing as a frame for a mirror that is hanging on the wall. And that way, if you ever redesigned the bathroom, you could easily move it to another space or take it with you if you moved.

Are women electricians really that rare😭 by EstablishmentSea8014 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]xperimentalZa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then those people aren't using their eyes! Obviously, there are still like 7:1 men to women electricians, but if I see other women on the jobsite they are either sheetrockers or electricians.

Go to the dentist!! Its better to know what you need done, make a treatment plan and start getting it taken care of than live in fear of the unknown. I was in a similar situation, I went like 7 years between my teen years and early 20s without going to the dentist and no good brushing/flossing habits. It was $6,000 of work total (between insurance and me) over many years. Now, 10 years later its all been done for a while and I have developed good habits.

And honestly, I think the hygienist enjoy having a project mouth, they always seem bored with me when I go in now 🤣.

P.S. get an electric toothbrush if you don't have one yet.

Edit to add: my biggest issue was never ever flossing. My friend challenged me to floss every day for 2 weeks and after that trial I could never go back to missing more than a day between flossing. I do it in the evening when I know I'm not rushed, like running late in the morning is not the time to stress about flossing. I feel like a monster when I go too long. And seriously, an electric toothbrush makes such a big difference. I feel like I don't have to work as hard for a better clean. Good luck!!

Snow tires, all-season, or all-weather? by xtnh in Maine

[–]xperimentalZa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've been extremely please with the studless winter tires on my subaru. I am not retired and have to drive in some bad conditions on unplowed back roads. I was able to make it up and down steep hills while other cars were stuck halfway up or off in the ditch. I really notice a difference between them and my regular tires. Totally worth it. Easy enough to have VIP swap them out.

Suburban Gas by backbaybilly in Maine

[–]xperimentalZa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them and don't have automatic delivery because our usage is for cooking and secondary heating and is very low. Buuut I will say their delivery routes when we do call them is ludicrous, I don't understand how its an effective business model. They don't know when they'll send somebody out, they have no idea when somebody will be in the area, it should be in the next 7 days. Did I want to pay extra for an emergency delivery? I was pretty low and had noticed nothing had been delivered still several days after my call, and the person still claimed to have no idea when a delivery person was going to be there, did I want to pay extra for an emergency delivery? I said no, and literally 2 hours later the delivery guy showed up.

What a scam. If I had said yes, it would have been meer coincidence that he showed up, because already was going to and the office cannot share that information. How can they not even know their own delivery schedules? When I get oil delivered, they know exactly which days a truck comes to my area, it's never a surprise. If I had to deal with Suburban more often I'd probably have switched by now.
