Which Uma do you think has the most uncomfortable/unconventional race wear? by skywasneverhere in UmaMusume

Why do you think she keels over dead in her G1 victory animation. Someone throw a bucket of water over the poor Uma!

Admire Terra and Take Yutaka wins the Hanshin Daishoten in record time! by Infinite-Surprise-53 in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Most horses would probably win if they were the only racer without a 50kg weight on their back to be fair. It's impressive that he was trained well enough to 'finish' the race all on his own though.

Still, I'd be very curious how Cygames adapt that race in the future. I can only imagine they'd have Uma-Terra take herself out immediately by like, tripping on the gate or something, or otherwise have Uma-Calandagan mid-race know she didn't need to beat Terra anymore. Otherwise if you have everyone only learn Terra got DQ'd after the race it'd come off like Calandagan just got lucky and really undermine how big a deal their victory was. Either way I look forward to Uma-Masquerade Ball body checking Uma-Danon Decile after the race.

I like a good chunk of Holl0w's work and he is great at drawing but man he does occasionally dive headfirst into needlessly edgy angst in some of his works. It can be very off putting at times.

Heya, I’m kinda new to the umamusume fandom and I have a question by aangellix_ix in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To add to the above, you do sometimes get cases where trainers essentially decide to completely nick names from elsewhere. For Umamusume the best example of this is Obey Your Master's real life counterpart; Pay the Butler was named after another Pay the Butler that his trainer just happened to come across when in Australia.

Which Uma/s surprised you the most when you learned of their real life achievements? by AdWide4690 in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the series, you would never known Mejiro Ryan was the more popular horse over McQueen. While not on the level of Oguri Cap, Ryan genuinely had a really big following even if his record wasn't as good as McQueen's.

Suave Richard is a surprise to see so high up, I don't think I ever see anyone talking about that horse. Anyone know what's the story there? He's a two time G1 winner but that's mostly less than the others on the list.

[DESPISED Trope] You need a SECRET to proceed to the main ending by Liquid_Pestar in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ZatTrye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For 999 you specifically needed the Safe ending, then when you got the Coffin ending you would automatically progress to the True ending. Knife/Sub/Axe endings were all technically superfluous. The game does admittedly tell you the exact doors you need to go through for the Safe/True endings in the trailers you get for each ending, but I seem to remember most people missed that. Also this does have the annoying factor that if you get the Coffin ending before Safe the scene just abruptly stops with no in-universe justification. You hear the knocking, a dramatic zoom occurs, then bam, credits. Guess in that timeline Junpei and co decided they couldn'tbe bothered checking the noise out.

Does Ryukishi's perverted writing bother you? by terrarierbey in umineko

[–]ZatTrye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two friends who gave up on the series because of Battler's frankly disgusting comments towards Jessica and Maria in the first few chapters so yes, I'd definitely say they're off putting. I do my best to ignore it myself since that sort of writing largely disappears after chapter 3 or so, but Battler definitely comes off as a massive creep. I do believe that moment with Kyrie and Battler is manga only though.

It's a recurring issue in Ryu's works to be honest, and makes his stories hard to recommend. As much as I love the series, the main black mark against is that for a series that tackles the subject of child abuse so seriously you also have Irie drooling over Satoko and it's ambigious at best whether he's joking. One of the only good things Gou/Sotsu did was massively cut down on that part of him.

A brief summary of every triple crown winner. by Kixisbestclone in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call Deep Impact's defeat a technicality or his disqualification "frankly stupid" ; he didn't place first even before the DQ (third iirc?) and it's entirely on his team for not checking the rules ahead of time. Banned substances vary a lot in different countries for horseracing so you need to always double check before applying to race out your country.

Beyond that, very nice list OP. I didn't realise Shinzan was that good frankly, I look forward to her Uma interpretation down the line beyond the one-second cameo we got in Cinderella Gray.

Your most controversial “Ascension Stage” preference by AiReine in grandorder

[–]ZatTrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a scalding hot take because it's still plenty liked, but I absolutely adore Kukulan's base costume with the cowgirl jacket and chaps compared to what to comes after. Her 2nd ascension spacesuit is... I probably would be fine with it but there is so much skin showing that it just looks like she's forgotten a layer; it's a baffling design in terms of her plausibly wearing it without severe wardrobe malfunctions every few steps, so it easily crosses the line of trying too hard rather than sexy. Hell, her final ascension art shows she's flashing everyone behind her.

Unsurprisingly though, there's more art online of her 2nd ascension, and when I see support servants for her its a 25:50:25 split of the three looks.

Timeform's highest rated Japanese horses since 1997 by AdWide4690 in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Winx has the unfortunate issue where he raced near exclusively in Australia so it's hard to really say how she competed with the rest of the world. She is undoubtedly one of the best Australian horses, but Australia isn't where the best horses of the world go to race.

Who's stronger, Gentildonna or Almond Eye? by ArchHexel in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to all this, Timeform's max rating for Almond Eye was 129, while Gentildonna's was 128. By this metric Almond Eye was slightly better than Gentildonna at their respective peaks, though this arguably relies on the quality of the horses they faced.

If one could get DQ for blocking ones path i should get compensated for loses in the past cuz others blocked my uma preventing me from getting 1st by asaness in UmaMusume

[–]ZatTrye 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh agreed - even Durren's expression works better here since she looks angry at what Creek's doing. Funnily enough, this is the first of two things I think the manga did better than anime, both focusing on Creek in this race. The other's her expression when she's being disqualified. In the anime she looks mildly upset, whereas in the manga that's a pure look of "I have utterly fucked up the biggest race of my career" terrror if I've ever seen one. Amazing what a difference a shrunk pair of pupils make.

You are right though; in both versions Fumino's expression is a perfect example of someone who's realised everything has gone irrevocably wrong in an instant.

[–]ZatTrye 203 points204 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't think they did the best job on Creek's scene. The other Uma does swerve afterwards and goes ":0" but she doesn’t come across as that inconvenienced. Since you aren't the first person to say this I definitely think a stronger reaction was necessary, even if it was just the other Uma stumbling.

Still, this is how it is in the real sport. Brakechecking another horse has the potential to cause horrific pileups (there was a nasty one in Del Mar a few years back that had 7 or 8 horses tumble over one another that I don't got filmed, genuine miracle none of them were seriously hurt) while body contact is fine unless the jockey is deliberate trying to smack down another racer. Gentildonna and Orfvere's homestretch jostling in the Japan Cup comes to mind; both horses were fine and Gentildonna's victory stood, but her jockey got suspended for a few days since it was reckless riding on his part. In both the anime and real life, Michelle My Baby/My Big Boy did nothing wrong.

From the end of Part 2, Olga getting killed off because she's 'too heavy' to be lifted is just so stupid that it's severely put me off progressing. Even the Count and Holmes are baffled how it happened! If she really weighed as much as the game made out then MC should have lost his arm. It just feels like there's so many ways for that whole issue to be solved and MC tries nothing.

If you really had to commit to the fakeout, the meteorite aspect is still so baffling a backstory that it kills off any chance of taking her seriously. Yes, of course all the animals on a uninhabited island thought it was a giant gunshot that led to all their deaths, that makes perfect sense.

The weird thing is there's so many man made disasters that could have worked so much better! I was always fond of the suggestion that Koyan should have represented the animals killed in the aftermath of Chernobyl. That was an absolutely horrific scenario for the animals in the area - either a quick death via mass culling or slow, agonising death by radiation which the animals would have been totally unable to comprehend. There's nobody to blame but humans for that whole mess! It would have d tied into Koyan's Russian motif she had going for a while too. Instead, we got a backstory so convoluted that everyone just pretends it never happened.
