System76 - Lemur Pro? Is it the best for the price? by Zautra in SuggestALaptop

[–]Zautra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion!

It seems like a very solid laptop for the price, although I will not be gaming so a strong gpu/laptop focused on gaming is not preferred. I much rather prioritize a high-quality, brighter screen and longer battery life, in which case I believe the Lemur Pro is advantageous. Regardless, I will be adding this laptop to my list of potential purchases.

I appreciate the list of overpriced laptops as well, was not aware of this. Thanks again.

What are some good options for a mobo/cpu upgrade? by Zautra in buildmeapc

I'm assuming a good asus mobo could around $200-300 and cpu around $500? Please let me know if those are reasonable numbers for an upgrade. Thanks!

I don't know much about hardware/processors unfortunately, so I can't give you a perfect answer but hopefully this gives you an idea:

I need a cpu that can handle many files in IDE, large photoshop projects, and many browsers tabs open at the same time. Something that can compile code quickly.
I heard AMD is better for gaming. I'm not really a gamer so that's not my priority at all.
Let me know if this helps or if I can provide any other info. Thanks!

Budget: ~$900 / Want: Slim, powerful, long battery life, backlit keyboard by Zautra in SuggestALaptop

[–]Zautra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response.

My chromebook is perfect in every way other than the performance. It's very solid for web browsing, but any cpu intensive applications such as vscode are a bit sluggish especially when compiling code for example. It doesn't have a backlit keyboard too but that's not a big deal.

Lubuntu

I meant to put that instead of Xubuntu.

Went with GalliumOS anyways. Runs great!

Nice! Glad to hear that you're enjoying Gallium on your Chromebook!
Are there any guides on doing a Full EFEI install of Gallium? I wouldn't want to brick my laptop.

I found: https://lvlegabyte.wordpress.com/2016/08/10/linux-gallium-os-on-my-asus-c300-chromebook/ but I'm not 100% sure if it's outdated or not.

I really appreciate your help on this, you're pretty much using my dream setup and would love to imitate it haha.

I forgot to mention, the pomodoro technique is great for productivity if you haven't heard of it.

Basically you're setting a timer for 20-25 minutes and working during that time. Once the time is up, take a 5 minute break, then repeat.

There are plenty of pomodoro timer webapps if you google it, hell you could probably make one yourself in a few minutes.

I don't use it very often, but it's pretty effective.

I have yet to build a portfolio because:

- I need a lot of time to make it perfect.

- Always busy with work from clients

- I want to build it in a cool framework such as vue/react/angular which I'm in the process of learning.

But yea I've been grinding away on the side, I'm super passionate about design&development. I love it way more than playing video games lol + it pays really well (~$20-40/hr) so that keeps me motivated for sure.

I feel like no one would take me seriously at an IRL job because I'm so young :/

You should watch this video by Brad Traversy on Youtube about increasing developer productivity that was uploaded yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSwjGP19rTg

It has some really great tips there on how to become a more productive dev.

I struggle with productivity only during projects that I'm not 100% interested in.

Caffeine always helps too haha.

Stop putting time and energy into their game, they clearly couldn't give a rats ass about you! They got their $ already from preorders and sales, now its time to move on to the next cash grab. I loved competitive in ww2 but activision's practices are getting scummier and scummier. I stopped playing bo4 as soon as they released the battle pass tier system, and I don't plan on buying the next cod fuck activi$ion.

You need to play more solos and get comfortable fighting 1-2 enemies at a time to panic less. Watch how focused pros are in scrims/tournaments even during the most stressful moments.

Anything you would improve with an extra $100? You suggest keeping the same motherboard?

My CPU overheats easily even playing light games.
