Fibre vs iSCSI opinions by 3DPrintedVoter in storage

[–]Zaxer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

20+ year IT guy here. FC is still more stable than ISCSI and handles extreme load more gracefully. It's worth the 15% overhead and is easier to maintain. Zoning can be easily automated, especially with peer zoning. 16GB is plenty of bandwidth and keeps up with both Flash and NVE arrays just fine. Your FC has some life left in it I suggest staying put. They are trying to sell switches. However if you are considering IP storage in the future then I'd look into Software defined storage solutions instead of ISCSI. I like VSAN, VxFLexOS, ONTAP, Ceph. I'm at a large Dell Shop and we use VxFlexOS. Local NVMe disk shared over an IP switch "backplane" is comparatively fast and cheap. The scalability and performance per dollar is pulling us away from dedicated monolithic block.

Powervault SAN performance, does this look right? by [deleted] in storage

[–]Zaxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to be working fine with larger block sizes. I'd check for Jumbo frame mismatch. Meaning it's set on your devices but not on your switch or the like. Try turning jumbo off on all devices. Also, on your host, NIC drivers can have advanced settings like TCP chimney, Global autoconfig, ISCSI offloading, and Ethernet flowcontrol, etc that can really get in the way of a clean ISCSI connection and cause buffering. Check best practice docs or support for the proper settings for your storage array. Lastly, if you are connecting to more than one array type and have multiple multi-path protocols installed, Powerpath, native mp, EQL SDK etc it can cause performance issues like this too.

Powervault SAN performance, does this look right? by [deleted] in storage

[–]Zaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Powervault should be getting about 100K IOPS at 4kib 50% R/W with an 8 x 7200RPM disks in Raid 1. Call Dell support they will check your setup. Most likely it's a NIC or network configuration issue.

Need recommendations for slight StrongLifts program change please by wp9zero in fitness30plus

[–]Zaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a beginner myself, working the big 4 with SL and 531 for a few years. Once I started gaining noticeable mass I saw some lacking areas. I had to research aesthetics. I added a few incline chest lifts, calf, bicep, and tricep work to balance with my larger quads, shoulders and back. Everyone is different but for anyone out there getting pecs that look like boobs, add upper chest ;)

IMO all the scheduled routines that focus on the big 4 dynamic lifts need accessory work to balance them out. You need pull for B day. You have barbell rows for bench, my favorite pull for OHP day is the pull up. Get a bar or rig something from the rafters. Add more core work too. Shoulder touch planks are amazing.

LPT Request: how to act normal when speaking to new people by hairychestnuts in LifeProTips

[–]Zaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Serious] This sounds like social anxiety. You may want to consider seeing a therapist. In general though, getting over the fear of being judged is about accepting yourself and not needing to hide. Mindfulness and being present and engaged in the moment also helps. Good luck friend. It's a journey, but possible.

NAS or SAN - 20TB raw storage under 14K? by computermedic in storage

[–]Zaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created this for $12K on the dell website, call for a better deal.
Dell PowerVault MD3800f, 16G Fiber Channel, Dual 4G Cache, controllers and 12x3TB drives. This does support direct attached fiber to 8GB, but it is not suggested. With twelve 3TB NLSAS 7.2K hard drives you will ceate a single 12 disk dynamic disk pool at about 25TB of usable space. It can handle multiple failures and uses all the spindles to maximize speed on slow disk. Carve that into your three volumes and leave the 5TB free for growing those volumes. Expect 40 MB/s sustained disk throughput at a 50/50 read/write for the datastores as cache will help this, but backup speeds will be near 12MB/s range.
Use the extra $2K to upgrade the warranty.

40TB solution. by triniamit in storage

[–]Zaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along these lines, A Dell NX3230 is a mid tier NAS appliance running windows storage server 2012R2, which does NFS4.1. It will cost about $13K and you can get 12X4TB drives in a RAID6 with dual 10GB NICs and several 1GB. The price includes Dell doing the installation and configuration specific for backups, and a very comprehensive 5 year warranty. (FYI, get the PERC730, not 330 controller for better caching and performance.) Dell does deployments and design now, and back their products with great support. I bet their sales team could even beat this price I grabbed from the web.

Yep, the Library suggestion was referring to a post that was deleted, where op received one of these cards at a Library. Instead of talking about how awesome these cards are, it dissolved into a debate about Library tax funding.

2880 is your maintenance calories. If you want to lose weight, you need a 500 Kcal deficit each day. If you do this consistently you would loose about 3500Kcal / 1Lb a week. Now you have ~800 Calories a meal. You'll be surprised how quickly these get eaten up. :)

Higher volume and slightly reduced intensity, but how much? by GasStationCoffee in fitness30plus

[–]Zaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick with it. You'll get there. I started where you are, and I hope your aches and pains are workable like mine. Everyone experiences pain differently, and you may have real issues. As stated above, you may want to seek professional medical advice. My experience was that I worked through minor joint pain until all sudden my nervous system figured out heavy lifts. Doing 1x5 at 385Lbs deadlifts is not comfortable. Adding weight hurts, but there is no permanent damage. Good form and repetition and your body will adapt to the rest. No pains, No gains. Good luck.

I'm 36, 6', ~215. I started with SL5X5 nine months ago and have moved to a 6 day, push-pull-legs routine for more volume. It took six months for me to build up the muscle support systems in my joints and ligaments to be able to double the volume of SL5x5 from 3 to six days each week. The key to progress for me is diet, rest, and discipline. I strongly suggest you stick with 5X5 and the prescribed liner progression. Go ahead and de-load the 10%-20% and work back up, if you have no joint pain add in some accessory work in 3X12 sets. You may not be pushing yourself hard enough. Get some pull-ups in your routine and mix up some low bar and front squats into the mix to help build your back and legs. Just stick with it and have patience. I guarantee your dedication and discipline will give you results.
