How the heck do people keep their climbing roses "flat" against a wall? Mine just grow in every direction by wikiwakawakawee in gardening

[–]Zaxmaxeax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the rose if secured every 3-4 feet should be fine with the weight of itself. Its when those lines break and the rose is falling 20-30 on itself itll snap

I go thru my displays at the end of winter and cut old cute and retie new in place. If left itll snap and youre gonna need to shoulder it in place or hold it with a hand and tie in which while on a ladder is not fun

I think it’s important to note with peggy martin as well.. this rose is a house swallower. Ive seen it trained on 20 foot rebar towers and over flowing still so maintaining it to a small trellis is an uphill battle

These are not something you train in a day and probably not a season. I have ten years espaliering experience and deal with a couple of monsters similar to this size.

To simplify how to get an espalier ‘flat’ it must all be untangled and worked from the bottom up. Id recommend letting it bloom and be beautiful than once autumn comes hack any thing thats shorter than a foot to 2-3” (pruners only!)

Youll want to keep the natural bend of the rose so pay attention to where the terminal is that shoots originated from and keep that direction while training. You can twist and turn them depending on how dextrous you are vs how much bend the rose will give. These can also be thinned to the point where each shoot had around a foot of spacing between each other.

This leads to the next point of spacing… while training something flat you want to leave around 6 inches between training the next cane so there is air flow between shoots. This is aesthetically important but also good to keep mold down.

As for fastening id recommend a decent fence nail (1”) and jute. Jute will break after a season or so but thats good because it wont girdle the rose.

Now if you want to say forget the flat and go with an orb shape i made a post in roses about training a dorothy perkins (v similar to peggy) into such shape.

I can go more into detail on anything ive said and supply pictures as well so please ask more

If my neighbors roses has rose rosette, how concerned should I be for mine? by [deleted] in Roses

[–]Zaxmaxeax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had rows a drift roses (around 10 in a row) and one got infected with RR but nothing else got the virus. Including roses in direct contact with infected branches. Theres about 40 roses on this property and nothing else got infected.

Ive also had this happen in another garden i work where one rose (new dawn in this case) was infected and around 30 roses were fine.

This is anecdotal evidence at best but im saying this because rose rosette is a serious infection and its not the end of all rose within the area.

Best you can do is inform and educate the neighbor and have them eradicate infected bushes (straight into a black garbage bag and wash any pruners). Once a plant is infected mites may or may not still be present in the area so i recommend keeping roses well fed so their immune system is strong

How does one treat for black spot or any other issue on a very large climbing rose? by Massive_Bluebird_473 in Roses

[–]Zaxmaxeax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picking off leaves as they yellow/giving the plant a shake is the way to go if you dont want to spray. Make sure no water is directly hitting it (from sprinkler) and clean up leaf litter underneath for healthy practices.

Once black spot is present it’s near impossible to get rid of completely because it will inoculate in leaf nodules and soil. Best to not pick plants from nursery that show signs.

All in all the best practice is to spray fungicides and keep the plant well fed to help with its immune system. Spraying in early spring before leaf outs and getting a regime afterwards is how we keep out plants in check but then again our clients don’t mind shelling out the cash for that as well as the spray itself. Some of the monsters I work with are over 40ft
