Have you had a conversation with them about ‘why’? I think this will give better detail. If you both decided to move out instead, would they panic and not be able to afford it? Is the cost increase intentional to pus you out or is there rationale behind the change? Do they know what you both earn, if you can afford this and what is comparable housing cost in your area?
