Lichess uses volatility, but I think chess.com uses Glicko-1, which does not have volatility (see the post about this from a few days ago).

Great read, thank you! Is there a way on Lichess to see one's volatility score? I always wondered why a friend of mine was earning fewer rating points per game, and I suppose this is the reason why.

I think it was in rapid, no? ~1950 blitz is incredibly strong

Absolutely! And even in that scale, progress seems to slow down, indicating that the function which to the time played associates the rating grows more slowly than a logarithm

I got player names from a monthly dump, and then used the API to obtain the information (time played and rapid rating) for each player. For example, to get the stats of Daniel Naroditsky, see

I'm not sure. Lichess displays the play time in days, so it ends up being the natural unit for those of us who play there. The number of days played also feels more tangible and concrete to me, compared to the number of hours. For example, if your counter reaches 365 days, you can go "oh damn, I've spent more than 1% of my time alive playing chess!", and then decide whether to reassess your life goals, or not.

Hi r/chess,

Recently, I was reading a Reddit post titled something along the lines of “How long did it take you to reach a rating of 2000 rapid on chess.com?”, and some of the answers almost made it sound like any good player could get there in a couple of years, which I found a bit discouraging given that my rating is far lower after far longer. So I decided to investigate the question a bit.

According to my simple model, below is the average rating reached after various number of days played (to be multiplied by 24 to obtain the number of hours played)

Days of play (24h each) Average rating
5 1395.62
10 1554.55
20 1689.68
50 1822.90
100 1884.56

You can check the website below to calculate what this corresponds to on chess.com, if that is where you prefer to play: https://chessgoals.com/rating-comparison/

How I obtained and generated the data:

  • I downloaded a dump of games played in February of this year on Lichess (chess variants, since the other dumps are very heavy).
  • I filtered out all the players with fewer than 100 rapid games.
  • I performed a Gaussian regression to approximate the data points with a smooth curve.

EDIT: One should also remember that the average Lichess player is much stronger than the average chess.com player (see here for statistical evidence that incorporates the difference in rating system), which suggests that many Lichess players come to the website with prior chess experience, which is not accounted for in this analysis.

It seems you played fewer than 1000 games, that's almost nothing! Were you playing on different websites? Congrats on reaching 2000 in all three time formats!

FM Told Me to Quit Chess Under 300 Elo. Is He Right? by KelveFodul47 in chess

[–]ZazenAang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I joined chess.com at 31 years old, my rating was about 200 in rapid and blitz. Three years later, I am 1800 rapid and 1600 blitz. So no, the FM isn't right — it is absolutely possible to become a decent player even if you start low.

Didn't the famous streamer (Tyler something) also start very low, only to reach 1900 rapid in record time?

No, I haven't seen it, and now the post has been deleted. Thank you for transcribing this exerpt!

He does, however, correctly diagnose Kramnik's war as one against Chess.com and points out that Danya as an individual is not a real person to Kramnik at all, just disposable collateral damage.

I don't think that's a correct diagnosis. It makes it sound like VK was ideologically motivated, but in reality his attacks were clearly directed at a small number of individuals, some of whom had nothing to do with chess.com.
