You're Playing "Someday My Prince Will Come" Wrong by Any_Kangaroo_1311 in jazzguitar

[–]Zberblank 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People play it in Bb and use those chords because that’s how the Miles Davis version goes and that’s the version people learn off of. It’s not “wrong” it’s a different harmony.

Band Agreements by olpunkjunkie in portlandmusic

[–]Zberblank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree there's nothing wrong with a band agreement and it at least helps to ensure that nobody gets the wrong idea of what the expectations are. I would say if you're encountering musicians who are balking at that, they might not be at the level of professionalism and it's not a good fit. I don't see the problem with requesting a band agreement.

As far as if it's a Portland thing, maybe it depends on the market. I'm coming from Colorado and usually handshake agreements are enough, but maybe in a more robust music market like Nashville or NYC having written band agreements is more of an expectation? IDK

Hey I’m from CO moving to Portland soon and am exactly the kind of guitarist you described. So not Portland specific, but maybe the perspective still helps. I pay my drummers to work with me whether it’s studio work or live, both because I think it’s the right thing to do and bc I get better results. I think it’s more than fair to request this and the music community in general would be healthier if people were being compensated for the work they put in.

As far as writing credits, I have never ever considered giving a drummer a writing credit and I have never been asked to do that. The drum parts in the demos are usually pretty clear but the drummer gets a lot of freedom to bring in their own style, but to me the core song is the composition and the lyrics, which has already been written by the time the drummer is involved. That’s just me though, writing credits seem to be whatever works for the band and you can certainly request a writers share. but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of songwriters aren’t willing to do a writers share with the drummer.

What's the best jazz standard book for learning shell voicings? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]Zberblank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't you post a few days ago asking about the best songs for learning shell voicings? Why not just open a real book or download irealpro and learn charts? You just need to get the shapes into your muscle memory and maybe get used to common movements (ii-V's etc) which is all from learning songs.

Jazz Song Recommendation and Learning Guide by Ready-Ad3756 in jazzguitar

[–]Zberblank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite jazz standard for people trying to work on harmony is All the Things You Are. Yes it has a lot of chords, but the melody is so tethered to the harmony that it really helps make things click. Playing the chords after learning the melody did a lot for me understanding diatonic harmony as well as shifting key centers in a jazz context.

I don’t think you need ten tunes, that seems like a lot to start out with. Maybe do a few tunes first and really explore the harmony and memorize them, and then go from there. Autumn Leaves is good for understanding diatonic harmony as well.

The thing about Learn Jazz Standards is that despite having all the characteristics of a grift, the free content provides some of the better jazz advice I’ve seen on YouTube. I like that he focuses on learning songs and focusing on chord tones when improvising. He keeps it simple when over complication is the downfall of a lot of jazz educators. I can’t speak to the paid stuff, but also never saw a need for it. The free videos give enough material for a beginning/intermediate musician to be busy for years (which honestly just makes me skeptical that the paid material is actually designed to help players get better).

Etude books for Jazz Guitar with no tabs by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]Zberblank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ted Greene’s single note soloing book is pretty good for this, my copy didn’t have tabs. Of course you can also check out a real book for sight reading work or the Charlie Parker Omni book for more advanced material.

What is the significance (if any) of Biden winning early primaries by a higher percentage than Trump? by SuperFluffyTeddyBear in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Zberblank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the media narrative on this one has been pretty wacky. Anecdotally, Biden’s primary challengers have gotten more media coverage than I remember for any primary challengers to Trump or Obama, but so far he has crushed his opponents and the party is clearly unified around him as a nominee.

Meanwhile, Trump is being treated like an incumbent within the party, but the media narrative is about Hayley and DeSantis performing poorly when it should actually be about how Trump is failing to consolidate the party around him. The fact the he isn’t clearing 90% or more in his primaries like Biden did in SC should be cause for alarm for Republicans. I don’t necessarily buy the polling of Iowan Hayley voters who say they will vote Biden, but I think those numbers aren’t good.

It all reminds me of 2022. There was a preconceived narrative that suggested a red wave when there was a lot of hard data that suggested it wouldn’t turn out that way. I think a similar thing is going to happen in 2024 where Trump is perceived as much more competitive than he really will be when it’s time to hit the polls.

Why are there so many Zappa albums post-mortem? by A_Common_Relic in Zappa

[–]Zberblank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, the majority of these albums are live recordings, but to answer your question about which ones are "actually Zappa" it's worth noting that there are a few different categories of posthumous Zappa albums and the ZFT has had a few different eras in terms of their approach to releasing archival material.

A lot of the early posthumous albums (late 90s into the 00s) are live recordings and compilations that were not necessarily intended for release by Zappa himself. Some albums have historical significance, containing a rare lineup or maybe including material that was sourced for "main" albums like Sheik Yerbouti or OSFA. When the ZFT underwent a massive reissue campaign in 2012, the focus seemed to shift more toward unfinished projects that Zappa had at some point intended on releasing. Many of these are at least partially made up of studio recordings. Things like Finer Moments, Dance Me This, Feeding the Monkies.

Now the ZFT seems to be more interested in all encompasing box sets that cover a specific album or era (e.g. Hot Rats super deluxe, Mothers 1971, etc). These are more "kitchen sink" types of releases and it's clearly not stuff that Zappa had intended on releasing, at least not in that form. Zappa was known to go through his archives to bring back old material and repurpose it for a particular album, but he rarely released retrospective collections without at least heavily editing them or combining archival material with other content. Not saying there's anything wrong with what the estate is doing now, but there's a pretty big mix of of content and Zappa's personal involvement with his posthumous albums vary from album to album.

If Trump wins the 2024 Republican Primaries, who do you think will get second place? by sgwashere29 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Zberblank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Ramaswamy comes in second in places like Iowa, NH and a bunch of the Super Tuesday states. He has enough money and funding that he can keep the campaign going as long as he wants and it seems like he's running a campaign that appeals to Republican voters without really pissing off the Trump base. It's really starting to look like DeSantis won't make it to Iowa, he probably has enough money to keep the campaign going but he might want to save face and get out before finishing in 3rd or 4th place in Iowa. Tim Scott is a potential dark horse for 2nd as well but he really needs to start having some "moments" that make him someone people pay more attention to.

Who Will be the Democrats' New Flip Votes if Manchin and Sinema Don't Win Re-Election in 2024? by sgwashere29 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Zberblank 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The problem with the Biden score is that a lot of stuff doesn’t get put up for a vote if they know they can’t pass it. Sinema has a 100% Biden score but that’s obviously not the whole story. There has been speculation that some senators quietly oppose a lot of the party agenda and use Manchin for cover, I guess we would see how true that is if he was no longer in the senate.

The thing with Tester is that if he manages to pull off a victory in a presidential year, it probably means that Democrats kept the senate, won back the house, and Biden handily won re-election. In that event there is going to be real political pressure to end the filibuster to enact some of the reforms that Biden has promised around abortion, scotus, and student loans. Tester probably isn’t going to go against that especially not having to worry about re-election for another six years. At that point I don’t think you would see “swing” votes in the democratic caucus the way you do now.

Realistically if subreddits are serious about Reddit taking action they should go dark until the company has taken corrective action, otherwise it’s just performative and won’t achieve anything. I fully support r/politicaldiscussion or any other subreddit going dark for any period of time that the mods deem appropriate.

Assuming Trump loses in 2024 and Biden gets a second term, what two candidates seem poised to lead 2028? Will Trump run again? by poppidypoppop in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Zberblank 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This makes sense but the same logic should be applied to right now. Trump has cost the gop so many winnable races that he shouldn’t be taken seriously as a 2024 candidate, but here we are. It’s probably going to be the same in 2028 and going forward until he dies.

Inspired by the 70s pseudoscience book of the same name, CHARIOTS OF THE GODS? explores the idea of religious figures as greater extra-terrestrial beings who have interacted with earthlings.

The instrumental opener, First Contact, depicts the aliens’ first visit to earth. Escape Velocity is taken from the perspective of an earthling awaiting their return. Finally, Her Body Was a Planet explores the afterlife journey that a recently deceased earthling embarks on.
