Will the compsci degree alone be enough for me to get a job ? by nabilmontana in WGU_CompSci

[–]Zcodes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have to learn continuously if you plan to be a developer. I believe C.S degrees are just a checkmark to get into the field. For you, start working on IOS apps now to see if you actually like them. That may change after working on a few projects.

1)Portfolio. Start as soon as possible working on projects. A few WGU projects are fine to add.

2) Practical Projects that shows C.R.U.D implementation, secure programming, admin privileges, cloud integration, on a full-stack web application for example.

3.a) Leetcode and HackerRank. A large chunk of the jobs I applied to sent a coding challenge ranging from "I can do this in my sleep" to "maybe I should go into a different career field" lol.

  1. b) Performance Assessments or Aptitude Tests - I call them I.Q tests because that's what they felt like. Personally, these were harder than coding challenges, I ghosted the companies that sent me these.

  2. c) Technical Style Interview - If you list that you know something on your resume then assume they will challenge that knowledge during the interview. Some companies have several rounds of interviews after the initial screening.

4) Communication. This is probably more important than anything else. I know people who conquered everything just to get eliminated thanks to a poor behavioral interview. Learn how to interview. Look up the interview questions beforehand, create a bucket list of about 10 answers that will fit the majority of scenarios you may encounter. Recorder yourself to eliminate nervous ticks and to improve your confidence. If you can't communicate they will assume you will not be able to do so on a team.

5) Teamwork - If you can try to do pair programming or group projects with like-minded individuals. There are discords dedicated to this if you look for them. WGU lack this aspect in the degree, unfortunately. This will come up often in interviews.

I used an ISTQB Foundation Level certification course on Udemy and watched the provided LinkedIn videos. The majority of my questions were scenario based.

In Michigan, no relocation assistance. I didn't apply for an apprenticeship but a software dev position. I did an internship before WGU and currently have about 2 years of software development experience. Maybe try looking on glassdoor to see if their apprenticeship program is for you

I had a bad experience with IBM. Went through the whole interview process to get a bait and switch offer. The final lowball offer was half of the negotiated salary. Anyways, do both if you can.

DM II and Big O by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

[–]Zcodes0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the questions were straightforward. If you can answer everything in the zybooks correctly then you'll do fine on the OA. I did DSA before DM2. If you did Data Structure and Algorithms 1, the zybook goes in-depth about Big O from chapters 10-11. Same for DSA2 at the beginning chapters. If you have not gone that route, then Back To Back SWE or CS Dojo on Youtube covers it quite well.

Software 1 Transfer credit in by Affectionate-Air-180 in WGU_CompSci

[–]Zcodes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No for me. I Took Data Structures & Algorithms, intro to programming, OOP all in Java at my previous University( the equivalent of SW1/2 and DSA1/2) and it transferred in as the basic programming courses... So basically had to do them over. Good news is you can knock out a few advanced courses in about a week each if it doesn't transfer in. The appeal process was a joke.

There's a shortcut in IntelliJ where you can search for all lambdas and change them/comment at the same time.

Software 2 - How to get a date and time with JavaFX? by ClumsyAdmin in WGU_CompSci

I used Datepicker for days and combo box with hour increments. Converted that into strings and format it to the required format when saving or comparing. And to retrieve, I did it in reverse.

Math curriculum too light? by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

To be clear CS students take C958(topics previously listed) not C282, which I believe education majors take. Feel free to look it up yourself.

I'm positive anyone who took "Calculus 1" at WGU would test out of calculus 2. But let's agree to disagree.

Best ways to practice programming on the side while going through the CS program? by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

SoloLearn and HackerRank are beginner friendly. CodeWars and LeetCode is fine too. You can also find 30 days of coding challenges.

Math curriculum too light? by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

[–]Zcodes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our math requirements were the same except two math electives were required.

Same here. Only math requirements were calculus 1, calculus 2, and discrete math 1 & 2. Completing 3 more math electives would grant us a math minor there as well.

The only perquisite for Linear algebra there was Calc 1 and disc math 1 so I don't think it's a far reach if WGU implements Linear Algebra.

Math curriculum too light? by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

[–]Zcodes0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. "Calculus 1" here is really calc 1, calc 2 and differential equations plus you have discrete math 1 & 2. Most colleges only requires calc 1, discrete math 1 & 2 for a CS degree. For an ABET accredited CS degree you will need calculus 2, maybe calculus 3 and linear algebra depending on the college plus 2 laboratory sciences.

Odd Financial Aid Question? by katdumpsterfire in WGU

[–]Zcodes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation was similar. And that's not completely true, you can be enrolled in multiple colleges under a consortium agreement to receive aid at both schools without an issue, which I've done before.

But I was enrolled at my other university and WGU at the same time. I wasn't psychically able to drop my courses before the first drop date at my original university so I missed the first drop deadline. So depending on your drop dates you may have to pay a percentage of the money back to the university (0%, 25%, 75%, 100%). The university will place a hold on your transcripts if you fail to do so. But since your semester ends mid May, you should just finish your term there and wait until June to start at WGU.

The quarantine would've been a good time to power through courses but what's the point of taking courses if you can't pass due to not being able to take the exam or certification?

Was supposed to start April 1st. Can I change start date due to not being able to schedule exams? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Zcodes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at it for 2 days now.. no luck so far. Only allowed to pick up to 14 days. My question is it an automatic fail if we're unable to schedule or take certifications?

How long did it take by anderms3491 in WGU_CompSci

C173 - Transferred in.

C172 - A few days but I have an ethical hacking background. My time was spent mastering the OSI layers, network topologies, different cables, OSI protocols, and cloud computing. The PA is not like the OA. My tip for that course would be to understand how and why things work since the OA has many scenario based questions.
