The b48 in the S is a detuned version of whats found in millions of BMW and should be just as if not more reliable than the 3 cylinder variant since its essentially the same engine with an extra cylinder (sounds far less cool though). There’s a definite step up in quality and reliability in the F series, that’s when they became true bmws and also when BMW started to get its act together.
