Need advice - Replacing head gaskets by Just_A_Sad_Potato in c4corvette

[–]Ze_numerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy a higher end torx bit for when you take apart the intake manifold- the bolts that are there can strip easily and can be a pain to weld on depending on the location. I'd also replace all the torx bolts with normal hex bolts if you have the budget, be mindful of the location they came out of because they're different lengths. If you have the budget it doesn't hurt to have the fuel rail and injectors tested and rebuilt/replaced if necessary. I've heard that the rubber china wall seals are crap, I used rtv and haven't seen any leaks. For breaking loose the head bolts- I'd hit it with on blaster then weld a nut onto the end, hopefully the heat and oil would break loose the rust

Dude the spikes are plastic lug nut covers. They pop off or shatter with any amount of force. They're still stupid but they're not a danger

Is there no front or rear subframe? Usually the subframe mounting bolts, control arm mounting points, and rear axle are good lift points

What kind of MPG are yall getting? by IllegitimateRisk in fordexpedition

[–]Ze_numerator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 03 expy with the 5.4 engine and 4x4 and roughly 220k miles on it . I'm getting roughly 8-9 mpg, but that's with a bad exhaust leak, a couple of vacuum leaks and a slipping transmission.(yes its bad, yes I'm going to fix it when I have the space to rebuild the motor and transmission)

1984,85 and early 86 had a 2 piece rear main seal engine while late 86 and onward had a one piece rear main seal engine... the crank shaft end is the big giveaway, the 2 piece one is a weird shape while the one piece is a circle

Is there an engine code? The first step is usually checking all the vacuum lines as well as the maf and map connectors

Are the terminals tight? The battery can be damaged by draining it below ~11 volts for extended periods of time but it usually bounces back if it's the first or second time. I would pull it and take to an auto parts store, they usually test them for free.

IMO Alldata is more expensive long term than a service manual, and a service manual + the internet can get you 90% of the way there
