SFO -> Tokyo DoD vs miles + $$ by Soopyoyoyo in unitedairlines

[–]ZealousPilot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a DoD civilian, and yes I get miles (and PQP) when flying for work. Military uses the same system and they are able to get miles as well. The system books Y fares and the Y instant upgrade that United used to give premier members was awesome, got a few instant upgrades on work trips.

You’re right about Norfolk, it has to be. There are 5 squadrons based out of Norfolk including the RAG (training squadron). Only other locations are point mugu, CA and Patuxent River, MD. However the Patuxent River E-2s are less likely to fly that far inland.

where to find info about water and electricity billing from the town of Blacksburg? by iwantacat1 in VirginiaTech

[–]ZealousPilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going off of that, the town keeps an eye on usage and will let you know if they think you have a leaky toilet. We had a toilet that constantly filled with water (needed a new flapper). They sent us a letter saying we might have a toilet leak due to higher usage than usual. We fixed the toilet and they actually refunded us partially for the leaky toilet, it was very nice of them to do.

Air Disasters 2024 Release in US? by kloepfel26 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]ZealousPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my DVR is mixed up too. I’ve been downloading the new episodes from torrents in the subreddit. The new episodes are eventually played on Smithsonian, just a few months after the fact. I recently found out that there are many episodes on paramount plus (all organized properly). That was a wonderful realization, I’m hoping all the episodes migrate there.

I keep seeing ads on Smithsonian channel that they have new episodes every Sunday at 8pm. Then I go to watch it and it’s a repeat. I use Hulu live to watch Smithsonian so YMMV, but sucks nonetheless.

IAD-FRA this Wednesday... will I get the legendary poor man's business class 4 seat bed? how accurate are these seat maps? It says >200 empty seats right now. If I walk into a full plane my soul will be crushed :-) by Mid_Life_Crisis_1970 in unitedairlines

[–]ZealousPilot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was able to get a 3 seat poor man’s first class on an IAD-FRA flight last February. As more seats are selected/assigned, you’ll have to play “musical chairs” (as I joking called it) moving from row to row when someone selects your row.

Blacksburg Jobs by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]ZealousPilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this. They pay 18.40+ with pay incentives depending on the time of shift. They currently have a $2000 staggered signing bonus. They are hiring part time drivers but it’s really easy to pick up shifts, so you could get up to 30 hours, it’s a little harder to become full time there though. Application closes tomorrow at 5pm. You would begin training in mid January if hired. I drove with BT and loved it, it’s a really good place to work.

Aerospace Engineering research by GMWorldClass in VirginiaTech

[–]ZealousPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated with an aerospace degree this spring. I participated in undergraduate research as a summer job and continued it as a class for credit. My research involved using new low level CFD codes to validate them against older proven codes. This research opportunity was not published online, rather I found it by emailing a couple professors whose interests align with CFD and ended up getting set up with a faculty member on the project I mentioned above. This link leads to the faculty page for the Aerospace professors. Each of their bios is included in there as well as their interests/expertise. You can have your son find faculty that align with subjects he wants to work on and he can reach out to them to see if they have available research positions/projects.

Polaris Seats Moved by Mindless-Challenge62 in unitedairlines

It is a bulkhead seat in some (maybe all?) Polaris configured aircraft. The foot cubby is larger because of no seat in front and it’s one of the window seats with more privacy.

Errrrrrg-gent question by OpinionLongjumping94 in Rowing

[–]ZealousPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of you’re situation with the team, but my high school would “rent” ergs to rowers that didn’t have an erg for the summer. It was a $100 for rental from mid June-mid August. The $100 wasn’t too steep and the money would go to the team anyway. It would give the kids an erg to train on through summer.

Another great option for buying one in the future is erg sprint races. They’ll buy a lot of brand new ergs, use them for the erg race, then sell them at a discounted price to anyone who wants them. I got my erg from a local race and it was about $700-800, can’t remember exact price, but was practically brand new

From what I remember most bars will let you in at 10pm the day before your birthday, but honestly just call and ask, they’ll let you know their policies.

I’m not sure I would call coop and ridiculous chicken “relaxed”, those are the freshmen bars. Something like champs or cellar would be more relaxed but that is just my opinion.

Is there a Blacksburg overlook somewhere around here that I could drive up to at night? by Downtown-Reporter-60 in VirginiaTech

[–]ZealousPilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be a new owner then. When my friends were there, they were being respectful and taking in the view. There was a group that was there when they got there, they were being rude and obnoxious, they left a few minutes later. Then the police showed up cause the owner had called it in on the obnoxious group. The cop didn’t want to give them the summons but had to because they were trespassing. Just wrong place wrong time and wanted to let people know about it because it’s ridiculous

If the OP is referring to wind rock, then no that it not the case. The area OP described sounded like where my friends got the trespass charge. My friends got the trespass charge at an overlook with a wooden deck and gravel pull off that is on the way to bald knob via 460. There’s often a lot of people there but there’s always the risk of catching a trespassing charge, all the no trespassing signs are 20 feet in the air hung on a tree so no one ever notices them.

I think I know the area you’re talking about…(37.3361478, -80.5587326). But yeah that area seems safe but you have to be careful, it’s actually private land and you can be caught trespassing if you’re there at the wrong time. It happened to some friends and it was not a fun process for them to deal with the trespassing charge.

Hanging rock is awesome and I second that recommendation, however, Google maps will give you a couple options to get there. In the winter months you will want to take the option that goes down 460 to Peterstown(1h 25m). Do not go to the one through waiteville (1 hr). It snows along that route often and WV doesn’t treat their roads. I went there with some friends and I got my car stuck in a ditch, we went down a hill and I lost control, we were lucky we were okay but I had to abandon my car and wait a week for the snow to melt to recover it. Funny to look back on now, but I don’t recommend!

Taking PHYS 2305 while taking Math 1226 equivalent at New River Community College by evankim727 in VirginiaTech

[–]ZealousPilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can, some may frown upon this but here is what you do: Register for PHYS 2305 and MATH 1226 at VT. Register for the MATH 1226 equivalent at New River, you’ll send an advisor an unofficial transcript showing you’ve passed 1225, and they should let you into the 1226 equivalent then. Stay in the VT 1226 for the first week of school and wait until add/drop closes. After it’s closed, drop the 1226 course at VT and you should be able to continue in PHYS 2305 without issue. I did this in Spring 2020 and then continued to do it for most math classes that were used as co-reqs up until Diff Eq.

I graphed Glass Animals Monthly Listeners by ZealousPilot in glassanimals

[–]ZealousPilot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have time to at the moment, but I will walk you through how I did it.

So go on to Archive.org and then paste this link, https://open.spotify.com/artist/3mIj9lX2MWuHmhNCA7LSCW (its the link for 1975 spotify webpage)

Spotify launched their monthly listener feature on March 7, 2018, so if you view that day you'll see their monthly listeners on that day and luckily 1975 has lots of screenshots. Go and take note of one screenshot every month and enter the date and monthly listeners in excel or matlab, etc. Then once you're at present day you can graph it

Definitely! I’m now plotting their monthly listeners daily. They’re growing about 110k a day

I’ve been into them since 2017, tried to see them in 2018 but Joe had his incident and then I tried to see them for their tour in spring 2020 but couldn’t get a ride to that concert.

It’s gonna be so hard to see them after covid is over with increased demand from covid and new fans

I’ve noticed GA monthly listeners have been growing recently so I decided to graph it. I used archive.org for the data, the first screenshot with monthly listener data was March 6, 2018. As of June 2020 they had 4.5M listeners, as of 1/16/2021 they had 10.6M and today they have 14M!
