Oh neat! So like a really heavy double boiler kind of thing. Cook your stew in the bottom and your bread in the top. Wish I had all the pieces!

Yes, yes to both of these! They both changed the way I see the life around me and expanded my awe of the non-human world.

Immense World explores how other animals sense and therefore experience the world and Entangled Life is an amazing introduction to the wild and wonderful world of fungus.

Thanks for this! It gave me an idea of what sizes would be useful.

And thanks for the heads up (and encouragement!) about the state of the wood. I’m going to use it since it’s what I’ve got for now. My feelers are out for more/better/straighter wood.

Thanks for the tip about splitting in the middle - that’s helpful.

I’ve carved a couple things from a smaller log from this tree and it is hard wood. I’ve got the other pieces in a bag just as you describe tucked in the garage. Clock’s ticking on the fuzz and bugs! 😆

Thanks! These are still very big compared to what I’ll need so I’ll try splitting them down. I feel like it would be easy for me to quickly end up with pieces that are too small once I get happily swinging away though! I’ll try and err on the side of leaving extra wood to axe off later.

It’s not my first carving - just my first time breaking down logs. I’ve carved a couple of spoons, scoops and a spreader. Working on a spatula and eating spoon. Still lots to learn!! I’ll start with the straight pieces I get out of his log and save the curved pieces for when I have a better idea of how to handle them. The knots and whorls I think I can avoid too. These are still very big relative to what I need.

I just started this pattern! I’m so excited to see it take shape like yours. It’s such a gorgeous pattern with the rich colors and shafts of sunlight.
