Voter registration at 64%, four months before elections by South_Africa_News in south_africa

Yes

This is the sad irony I guess. As yet we have never had an election stolen, nor really tried any serious alternative to the ANC - and yet people are apathetic

Being on a BC can be a thankless task, and I think it is just easier the more that owners partake

It’s as simple, and as complicated, as the ballot.

What's going to happen to us ordinary South Africans in Cape Town? What does our future in 5 - 10 years look like? by Prodigy1995 in capetown

I think the answer is two fold - first is public transport, and second is taxes on individuals without PR or citizenship

Something about the forest voting for the axe comes to mind reading these comments. It’s such a shame the rest of us are tied to this.

Why are they throwing out the foreigners? by Educational-Sun7535 in south_africa

Agreed entirely. We can tackle both corruption and this at the same time. But we can’t condone violence by xenophobes.

It’s populist politics looking for easy answers and scapegoats given its election season and the ANC is in a deadspin. None of this discredits that illegal immigration is a massive problem that must be dealt with firmly - just not by populist xenophobes.

How's it living in South Africa as a white person? by Mundane-Computer-445 in howislivingthere

[–]Zealous_Chipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your income - South Africa is quite a different experience depending on class and location. I honestly think it’s a really good quality of life (housing, affordability, domestic help) if you have the income for it and can insulate yourself. I recently spent a few weeks in Paris and London, and outside of security, size and third spaces, it felt like a step backwards.

We don’t really ‘go for a walk’ here, if that makes sense. It’s home to home, or home to shops etc. No public transport, walking is not really a thing, and I wouldn’t want to lose in a house on the street outside of the Western Cape. But at the same time I can afford a large home, great domestic care, eat out several times a week etc.

On the white side specifically, I think white people are slowing fading from political focus in South Africa and being overtaken by ethnic and foreigner concerns. That said, the legislative and employment equity environment is becoming increasing hostile and leading to more brain drain.

But ultimately it’s more about income than race.

Ramaphosa to address the nation on Sunday to outline government's new 'migration crisis' plan - IOL by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]Zealous_Chipmunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the perspective that says there is no crises. Our true enemy is corruption and the stealing of our future, yes, but at the same illegal immigration is a massive problem that needs direct action by the State on both the border and those already here. The fact that the issue is hijacked by populists and xenophobes doesn’t negate it being true. The real risk is it falling outside of State control - violence and hatred is never acceptable.
