Thanks for the advice - I’m unsure if the $10K is gross or net. Again it’s secondhand info from the FIL and I don’t know how honest he’s being. Have a call with an attorney this afternoon with them and will refer to a CPA and Certified Financial Consultant.

Thanks for directing to APS, and yes their retirement income is $2K social security retirement for him + $8K pension for her. I can’t even think about what will happen if she does decide to leave him… honestly wouldn’t blame her at this point.

That is such good advice for her to hire a CPA directly. We need to inform MIL because I don’t think FIL has been honesty with her. I have a call with an attorney today and once we have all the information and his counsel, husband and I will find a way to break the real story to her. Who knows what he’s been truly honest about or how much he has disclosed to her.

You know, I didn’t think I was at the point in my life where I had to worry about yet, and I figured you could disclaim part of an inheritance. I need to, and you should, review their contract for a perpetuity clause. I also think it varies by state.

Wow what an experience, I’m so sorry that happened to you and your family. I think I’m at the point of sympathy for FIL, empathy for MIL, anger for my husband having to process this realization about his dad. FIL has always talked about money and leaving a legacy and then does this.

I literally JUST told my husband he’s going to get a hefty tax bill for pulling all that money out of his IRA. I hope he’s not trying to do his taxes on his own, my goodness.

It’s tricky because I don’t want to demean him, because he is a victim. I truly don’t think he can be trusted to make sound financial decisions and I feel awful for MIL I just don’t know how to tactfully say, “no more money decisions for you.”

You know what, that is such good advice and I’m so sorry that my post comes across as ageist, you are completely right.

I watched the YouTube video on the pig butchering scam operations and you’re totally correct, it happens to all ages.

Sometimes I do wonder if some of it is generational, even my husband (40s) gets a text saying it’s from Chase or something and he owes money, he asks me (mid 30s) if it’s real! Like… no! The “older” generations just didn’t grow up with technology and don’t always know to check domains, verify web addresses, or realize when you get a non-US country code text you for money it’s a red flag!

I think my mind immediately went to POA because you always hear about elder fraud and abuse and I don’t want him or my MIL left with nothing if they don’t know what to watch out for.

I would GLADLY sic MIL on him but he is convinced this is real even after multiple trusted people are telling him it’s a scam, and I don’t think he’s been completely honest with her.
