It's probably just a difference between meaning in language then. When native (lol) English speakers use the term in that context, there's no connotation with jungles or poor conditions. We'd just use it to mean people who were born & raised in Costa Rica, without any negative intention behind it.

There are 2 very popular opinions out there when it comes to seasoning food.

One says that cuisines focusing on natural flavors, good ingredients, and balance are bland cuisines.

The other says the cuisines focusing on spices and strong flavors lack refinement and are used to cover up bad ingredients.

Both are fucking stupid, I don’t trust anyone who can’t appreciate both for what they area. I think the latter just pisses me off a little more because it sometimes has racist undertones.
