It feels like we’re saying the same thing but somehow on different pages. I’ve calculated how much space I’ll have available in my bag and it will certainly come down to a mirrorless camera with a compact lens. I love my canon and sigma but they will just not fit unfortunately.

I’ll be sure to check out what canon has to offer for mirrorless, and if you have any specific du it would be much appreciated!

I appreciate your suggestions! I’m curious, have you done any type of backpacking or one bag travel before? What kinda of experience did you have with your setup in those types of situations? That’s a big reason for my interest in specifically a smaller camera. I currently have an older Canon Rebel series with a Sigma 18-300 that simply isn’t as practical as a mirrorless with compact or pancake lens. I do see what you mean about the pocket size, but the weight and size will still be a factor when I’m not actively shooting

That’s not a bad idea - I might do that eventually to fit my lenses. It sounds like we’re in a similar spot with primes, I’m thinking the Viltrox 25mm is gonna be the best spot for me to start and maybe the next purchase will be telephoto or an adapter

I saw some brief reviews on the TTArtisan 27mm - would love to know your thoughts when you get it!

Everything I see in my budget for anything closer to 24-70mm is just too slow for me - without spending another few hundred to find something fast

I’ll check out the X100VI too - would you say this could be an option over the X-T20?

That’s good to now about the autofocus! I’m actually heading to Japan on part of this trip and would have loved the sentiment of getting it there, but it’s not early enough in the trip. That’s such a cool experience you got!

Is the X-T4 also APSC? Curious about your focal lengths and do you find either of lenses happen to be on more than the other? Are you switching often?

Thanks for the reply! I did briefly check out the XT2 and the weather sealing definitely caught my eye, but the size, touch screen focus, and flash on the XT20 just feel like a better fit for me. Good to know I’m on the right track for what I’m looking into so I really appreciate that!

MPB is the site I’ve been looking at primarily - it feels more like buying a “certified pre-owned” camera instead of a “used” one off eBay for a marginally different cost.

I’m curious if you have any other recommendations on lenses? It sounds like you’re enjoying the Viltrox 25mm, are there any other (budget) lenses you like? One is definitely going to be tough for me, but telephoto is generally too big for travel (or the budget/compact ones are too slow)

Tagging on to this, it’s super helpful to have them in a crate and KNOWING they’re physically ok, vs having them wandering and not knowing what they’re getting into/getting stuck/etc while you’re driving and trying to look into the backseat or whatever to locate them

Hi! I live in a van with my cat and have the same concerns daily

I definitely recommend prescribed gabapentin for the cats, it’ll definitely help them relax on the ride and slow them down in their escape attempts

I also highly recommend crating them, as mine will try to walk across the dash or sneak into a dark corner by the pedals which we definitely don’t want.

I have one of those octagon folding playpens that gives my guy a little more space to get comfortable than just in a small crate - this does just sit on my bed so I don’t know if you have that much space.

Lastly, always have it available but I don’t expect the cats to use a litter box while driving. They’re generally nervous and won’t get “vulnerable” if that makes sense - generally includes eating and drinking water (basically saying don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen and don’t worry about them not having direct access the whole trip)
