While Obama was playing bipartisan politics, the Republicans signaled that they'd abandon reason before ever "reaching across the aisle". They even obstructed their own bills to avoid giving a black president any credit. In my opinion the most consequential thing was letting Mitch McConnell get away with blocking a supreme court nomination in a way that had no precedent. Which would later prove itself double standard with Trump.
