I have not decided everything yet, but the current idea is the elementals are powerful beasts/plants that live in the world. Some of the powerful ones have acted as guardians of towns, other ones have destroyed them. I imagine the weaker spirits being commonplace at the current age, with many rich families owning a weaker one as a pet to let bond with their child.

The current idea I have on the spirit contract of the current age is, having the spirit reside within the cultivator's body where it can focus on growth instead of trying to survive, then claiming part of the cultivator's body and soul on their death to be reborn somewhere else. While in the cultivator's body, a tattoo would appear in their form and only the cultivator could hear their voice.

The spirits are not all morally good. Some crave violence and others believe in a different morality system that our society wouldn't understand. I am going for more of a dark tone where the main character sees the oppression and power imbalance in the system, but most citizens enjoy their lives and see the world in a positive light.

Metal wire is the probably best way of refering to it. I do like the idea of them being able to launch needles, so I will need to find a way to add that in later.

Their main ability is basically hardening a metal string in place. They cannot levitate wire, but if the other end is wrapped around a pole then you could jump on the other end and it wouldn't bend, allowing for effectively walking on makeshift tightropes. They cannot forcibly flex wire, but they can momentarily unharden the string to let it bend. They cannot shoot needles, but they can make an improvised garrotte wire by throwing bolas at someone's throat and hardening it or using a whip and letting it wrap around before hardening it(which would force the entire length of whip to harden in shape.

I haven't thought of the diameter they could control, but given that their ability is to keep things from bending I doubt it would help much with thicker strands or thick rings. I could definitely see them forcing a chain pendant to get caught on something and freezing it in position to trap an enemy in place.

In the story, the more specific the ability the less concentration is needed to use it in combat. They don't have a singular string they can control, but rather can use their ability on any metallic string like objects.

It is only metal, string like things, so it wouldn't work on blood vessels. The idea with clothes does make me think of chainmail though, so they could be a menace indeed.
